ENG vs IND: India Announces 15-Man Squad For ODIs

India announced their squad for the three-match ODI series against England next month, and the big talking point has been the exclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal. India announced their squad on expected lines, but the  Yashasvi Jaiswal omission raised quite a few eyebrows. Yashasvi Jaiswal missed out on the squad despite scoring a ton in their recent match against Afghanistan, where he made an unbeaten 110 while opening the batting. It was his second hundred in just his 6th ODI and second in the last three matches, but it couldn’t seal him a place in the 15-man squad for England, in a reflection of India’s batting riches in white-ball cricket.

Virat Kohli returns to the squad, subject to a fitness clearance, and coincidentally, Jaiswal had been called up for the ODIs against Afghanistan as a replacement for Kohli, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury. It may still happen that if Kohli does not clear the fitness test, then Jaiswal may be recalled as a replacement again. According to reliable sources, Kohli will undergo his fitness assessment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in the coming week.

Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah return to the ODI squad

With India building up towards the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, they named a full-strength squad for the England series, with Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah returning to the squad. For the record, Bumrah has not played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup final due to workload management reasons, while Axar had been out of the ODI squad for India’s last three series against South Africa, New Zealand, and Afghanistan, all series played at home.

Bumrah takes the place of Prince Yadav in India’s pace attack, while Axar Patel comes back as a straight swap with left-arm spin all-rounder Harsh Dubey. Both Prince and Dubey made their ODI debuts against Afghanistan. There was also no place for veteran Ravindra Jadeja, as he has been left out, whether due to injury or something else, we really don’t know at this stage.

Hardik Pandya ruled out due to injury

Ace Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has not been included in the squad. The all-rounder was originally picked for the Afghanistan ODIs, the three-match series that just concluded, but was later ruled out after suffering a leg strain while training at the COE. It is understood that he hasn’t fully recovered and will not be ready in time for the series starting on the 14th of July. So, Hardik has been ruled out as well.

The three ODIs on the England tour are scheduled to take place in Edgbaston, Birmingham, on July 14th, Cardiff on July 16th and then the final one at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s, London, on July 19th. It should be one hell of a series for sure.

India Squad for the ODI series in England

Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (subject to fitness clearance), Shreyas Iyer (vc), KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar.

Challenging Series on the cards

It will be a challenging series for the Men in Blue India as they embark to face England in England. They will fancy their chances of winning the matches and series, but the preparation now begins in full earnest for the Indians. They would like to put their best foot forward and hone in on the skills required to succeed. Most importantly, get used to playing ODIs as teams play T20Is more than ODIs in this day and age.

The focus will be on Rohit and Virat for sure, but it’s an opportunity for others to step up and make a name for themselves. It will also be a test of character for Shubman Gill, the captain, as he will be tested. Rohit and Virat can guide him, but for that, better sense should prevail, and the two veterans should be part of the squad which they are in here. England at home is a different beast. So, India has to be at their best to win the matches and series.

Let’s wait and watch and see how things unfold in England from July 14th to 19th, 2026.
