ENG vs IND: Dodda Ganesh Takes A Dig At Joe Root On Road To Break Sachin Tendulkar’s Record

Joe Root achieved the landmark after reaching the score of 120* in Manchester during the fourth Test of the ongoing series against India, taking him past Ricky Ponting’s Test tally of 13378 runs. The England stalwart Joe Root  now sits only behind India’s Sachin Tendulkar (15921) in the all-time Test run-makers list.

Joe Root on what could be called as a Milestone day broke as many as 11 Test Records on a single day marking his claim to be one of the greatest batter for England to have played this format.

11 Records Broken By Joe Root During His 150-Run Knock In 4th Test Against India

Joe Root came out to bat at No. 4 for England in the first innings of the ongoing fourth Test against India at Old Trafford in Manchester. He faced a total of 248 balls during his stay at the crease and, with the help of 14 fours, scored 150 runs. He added 144 runs for the third wicket with Ollie Pope (71 runs from 128 balls) and 142 runs for the fifth wicket with Ben Stokes (77 not out from 134 balls).

Joe Root’s second century in a row against India helped England close the third day’s play at 544/7, and their total lead is now 186 runs.Here’s a look at 11 records broken by Joe Root during his 150-run knock in the first innings of the Manchester Test.

  • Root became the first English batter to score 1000 Test runs at Old Trafford in Manchester. He crossed the 1000-run mark when he reached an individual score of 22 runs in the morning session of Day 3.
  • Root is the third English batter after Graham Gooch and Alastair Cook to score more than 1000 Test runs in two English Test venues. Root has 2166 runs to his name at Lord’s and 1128 runs to his name at Old Trafford.
  • Root has crossed the 50-run mark 104 times in Tests now, which is one more than Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting’s tally of 103. Only Sachin Tendulkar of India, with 119 fifty-plus scores, is ahead of Root now.
  • Root became the first batter in the world to score 12 Test centuries against India. The ongoing match in Manchester is Root’s 34th Test against India. Australia’s Steve Smith is second on the list with 11 centuries in 24 matches.
  • Root has now scored nine Test centuries against India at home, which is the most by a batter against an opponent in home Tests. Don Bradman is second on the list with eight centuries in Australia against England.
  • Root has also equalled Kumar Sangakkara’s record of 38 centuries in Test cricket. Only Tendulkar (51), Kallis (45), and Ponting (41) are ahead of him now.
  • Root equals Jack Hobbs’ record of scoring the most Test centuries for England against one team. During his playing days, Hobbs also scored 12 centuries in 41 Tests against Australia.
  • The century in Manchester against India is Root’s 23rd Test 100 in England, which is the joint-most for anyone in home Tests alongside Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Kumar Sangakkara
  • Root leapfrogged Rahul Dravid (13,288) first and then Jacques Kallis (13,289) in the first session to become the third-highest run scorer in Tests, and then in the second session, broke Ricky Ponting’s record of 13,378 runs as well to become the second-highest run scorer in Test cricket.
  • Root now also holds the record for scoring the most runs in Test cricket against one bowler. Root has scored 588 runs against Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling in Test cricket. Steve Smith is second on the list with 577 runs against England’s Stuart Broad.
  • Root has scored a total of 7195 Test runs in England now, which is more than Jayawardene’s tally of 7167 in Sri Lanka. Only Ponting (7578 in Australia) and Tendulkar (7216 in India) are ahead of him.

With plethora of records broken by a hungry Joe Root in his exciting test career, now only one milestone remains for him to acheive is to unlock the route to surpass Sachin Tendulkar who sits atop the list by most runs scoring mammoth 15921 Test Runs. However Former Indian pacer and selector Dodda Ganesh takes a slight dig at Joe Root,advising him to retire at 15900 runs as a respect to Legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Joe Root came in the 39th over after the openers had provided a brilliant start to the hosts, with the side sitting at 197/2 in pursuit of India’s 358, and stabilised England late on Day 2 before continuing the job on Day 3. During his brilliant knock, Joe Root jumped from fifth place on the all-time men’s run-scorers list to the second spot.

In the 57th and 58th overs of the England innings, Joe Root overtook Rahul Dravid (13288) and Jacques Kallis (13289). Finally, Joe Root overtook Ponting’s landmark feat in the 101st over.

In the 96th over, Joe Root reached his second century of the series and 38th hundred in Test cricket.The hundred also put him level with Kumar Sangakkara on the century-makers list, with just Ponting (41), Jacques Kallis (45) and Tendulkar (51) ahead of him.

Former Indian seamer Dodda Ganesh took a dig at Joe Root asking him to retire at 15900 Test runs as a mark of respect to Legendary Sachin Tendulkar. He could overtake the legend to become the leading run getter in Tests in due time as his consistency at the moment in Red ball cricket seems phenomenal. He said :

“How about Root retiring on 15,900 test runs as a mark of respect for the God of cricket 😅 #ENGvIND,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

This came as a reference to South African Wiaan Mulder who recently batting on 367* vs Zimbabwe refused to overtake Brian Charles Lara’s all time highest 400* in Tests as a mark of respect to the West Indian legend.

Joe Root’s historic day puts England in a firm grip of the fourth Test against India in Manchester. England batted out the complete third day with great control to send India into despair. Resuming the proceedings on 225/2, the hosts went to stumps having added 319 runs for five further losses at 544/7 .

The Manchester Test became more challenging for India as England solidified their position with a strong batting performance. After a strong start and relentless consistency, the hosts stacked up a massive 544/7 by stumps, leading by 186 runs and putting India firmly on the back foot.
