CSK vs PBKS : 3 Reasons For CSK’s Defeat Against PBKS

CSK suffered a 4-wicket defeat against PBKS at their home, and with that, their playoff chances are over, and they are officially eliminated from the tournament. Nothing went right for CSK this season as they couldn’t defend a challenging 191 against PBKS. They have to take the positives from the youngsters and build a better squad for the next season. Let’s look at the reasons for their defeat.

Poor opening at powerplay

Both the CSK openers, Shaik Rasheed ( 11 off 12 ) and Ayush Mhatre ( 7 off 6 ), got out earlier in the powerplay. CSK’s opening has the lowest average this season. They weren’t able to accelerate in the power play. CSK batters have hit only 6 sixes inside the powerplay this season.

The highest score for CSK in this powerplay is 59/0 against PBKS in their 5th match. They were not able to score at the run rate of 10 runs in the powerplay for even a single match this year. CSK lost 3 wickets inside the powerplay overs for 48 runs.

Batting collapse in the death overs

Unlike their previous matches, CSK batters Dewald Brevis and Sam Curran played well in the middle overs. Especially, Sam Curran almost scored a boundary in every over, including a 25-run over against Suryansh Shedge in the 16th over.

But this time, they fumbled in the death overs. After that expensive over from Shedge, Arshdeep Singh put a break to the run-flow by giving just 4 runs in the 17th over. Yuzvendra Chahal came to bowl the 19th over and picked  4 wickets, including a hat-trick, and gave away only 9 runs.

It stopped the run-flow completely and restricted the score to 190 runs. CSK got all out in 19.2 overs. They scored just 30 runs in the last 3.2 overs and lost 6 wickets. They lost the last five wickets in just 7 balls.

Lack of game awareness

Yuzvendra Chahal came to the bowl the 19th over, and “spin basher” Shivam Dube was at the non-strikers’ end. MS Dhoni hit the first ball for a six and got out in the next ball. Deepak Hooda came to face the third ball and scored a double. He could have taken a single and gave the strike to Dube, who had the reputation of hitting spinners.

But, he went for the double, and got out in the next ball, which exposed the tailenders to Chahal and he took a hat-trick from there which changed the game completely.
