It’s Part 2 of the Greatest Rivalry. Cricket’s El Clasico takes centre stage on Super Saturday as CSK hosts MI at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Part 1 went to the Men in Yellow as CSK thrashed MI by 103 runs at the Wankhede Stadium a few nights ago. Mumbai will be aiming for revenge and paint the Chepauk Blue while CSK will aim for a win to reclaim their fortress. Both CSK and MI have struggled at home this season.
CSK under Ruturaj Gaikwad are placed in 7th place with 6 points having 3 wins in 8 games. They have looked good in patches, but have not been consistent enough to deliver wins. They may have had their moments but have flattered to deceive with bat in hand most of the time and sometimes with the ball as well. They will want to complete the double over MI as it’s about bragging rights in this rivalry. It’s been an underwhelming campaign for the Men in Yellow.
The same can be said about the Men in Blue. MI have looked below par and far from their best this season having won only 2 games in 8 matches. One of those wins was their season opener. They have lost 4 games at home out of the total 6 that they have lost. Under Hardik Pandya, the team is showing signs but not playing the complete game. Their bowling is an issue no doubt about it with Bumrah being off-colour but batting is decent despite missing Rohit Sharma. Two struggling teams battling to stay relevant in IPL 2026. The loser of this match won’t make the playoffs for sure.
Overview.Â
The stage is set for Part 2 of the Greatest Rivalry as the Men in Yellow CSK hosts Men in Blue MI live from Chennai on Super Saturday. Both teams have had underwhelming seasons thus far and would like to win tonight to have their slim playoffs hopes alive. Both have struggled to find consistency and have largely underperformed. They have had their moments and because of the lack of consistency, they are in 7th and 9th place respectively with CSK in 7th and MI in 9th. So, if one of the teams has to make a move, it has to be now or never.
After thrashing MI in Mumbai, CSK under Ruturaj Gaikwad hosted GT in Chennai. The Men in Yellow flattered to deceive in this clash if we are being honest about it. CSK put into bat first struggled to get going. Sanju Samson got out early and CSK lost a few more wickets. They never got going and struggled. Gaikwad hung in there and played a slow knock. He eventually made an unbeaten 74 off 60 balls. The other batters chipped in as CSK made 158/7 in 20 overs.
But GT came out all guns blazing and through Sai Sudharsan’s 87 and enterprising 30s from Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill romped home with 8 wickets in hand and about 4 overs to spare. It was a comprehensive win and CSK were given a brutal reality check. CSK will still miss the services of MS Dhoni still battling a calf injury. He batted in the nets. It will be interesting to see their playing XI and whether Spencer Johnson gets a chance. They need to get their tactics right with regards to Impact Substitute. CSK will hope the home crowd helps them to win.
On the other hand, MI under Hardik Pandya are trying to buy a win after losing more than they have won. They have won 2 matches and lost 6 games and for them, every game is a do-or-die situation as 6 out of 6 wins from here will take them to 16 points. They better make a move tonight and can because on paper, they have a better team than CSK.
In their last game against SRH in Mumbai, MI batted first after winning the toss and posted a massive 243/5 on the back of a memorable unbeaten ton from Ryan Rickelton while Will Jacks, Naman Dhir, and Hardik Pandya chipped in with valuable contributions as MI thought they had enough. But then, the bowling of MI fell apart as the Abhishek Sharma-Travis Head partnership set it up for the Orange Army with a 92-run score in 6 overs and then a 129-run stand inside 9 overs. MI got three quick wickets, but Heinrich Klaasen stood tall and guided the chase through.
A late cameo from Salil Arora took the side home in the 19th over. MI didn’t know what hit them and must pull up their socks now before it’s too late. Rohit Sharma is a doubtful starter for this game as well. We have to see the strategy from MI and how they shape up with regards to playing XI and impact player when the match comes along. The stage is set for the big El Classico Part 2 in Chennai.
Head-To-Head.Â
CSK and MI have played against each other on 40 occasions with CSK winning 19 off them and MI 21. In Chennai, they have battled against each other 9 times with CSK winning 4 times and MI winning 5 times. It’s a great rivalry with nothing to chose between the two sides.
Pitch & Weather Report.Â
The pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is expected to be a batting friendly surface that retains its traditionally dry spin supportive character in the middle overs. While historically known as a slow, low spinner’s paradise, the 2026 season has seen a shift towards flatter wickets that assist stroke play. Significant dew is expected during the second innings, which may make the bowling second difficult and favours the chasing side.
The weather in Chennai for tonight’s clash is expected to be hot and humid with clear skies during match hours. Most weather reports including IMD and Accu weather indicates no threat of rain, ensuring a full 40-over game. The temperature will be around 31 degrees Celsius. The extreme humidity which is 78-81% will make it feel like 38 to 40 degrees for the players.
Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both sides.Â
Here we will try and predict the playing XIs of both sides.
CSK XI: Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Urvil Patel, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh, Akeal Hosein/Spencer Johnson.
MI XI: Ryan Rickelton (wk), Will Jacks, Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (c), Robin Minz, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Allah Ghazanfar, Ashwani Kumar.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash.Â
Sanju Samson: Sanju Samson is the linchpin of CSK batting. If he fires, CSK gets a good score; if he misses out CSK struggles to get to 150-160. That is the dependency on him by the Men in Yellow. Sanju will have to again fire on all cylinders for CSK to shine again and do well on the big stage. Ruturaj may have found some runs, but he is far from fluent at this stage. So, all eyes on Samson again.
Noor Ahmad: For CSK to do well against MI, they will need their spinners to come to the party. MI struggles against left-arm spin and Noor will be a key player. Noor has done well in patches, but have not been consistent enough. If Noor gets his act together, they can win this match easily. But MI takes down Noor, then CSK will be in big strife.
Ryan Rickelton: Fresh off his terrific ton in Mumbai, Ryan Rickelton will be ready to go in this epic clash. Rickelton should retain his place ahead of de Kock even if de Kock is fit, based on that innings against SRH. Ryan will want to give his side a quick start and lay the platform to put the CSK team under extreme pressure. For MI to win, they need to score around 200 to beat CSK since the Men in Yellow does not chase 180+ since 2019. Rickelton will be a big factor in this one.
Allah Ghazanfar: Allah Ghazanfar has been MI’s best bowler in recent times. With the pitch expected to aid spin, he will be a handful for Chennai batters. CSK struggled against him in Mumbai and will have to be at their best to counter him in this clash. He will want to do a job on CSK in the middle phase of the game which is a crucial phase.
Key Stats to look forward to in this clash.Â
- CSK has won six of the last seven clashes against MI from the period between 2022-2026 which includes a 103-run win in April 23rd 2026.
- Jasprit Bumrah needs 3 wickets to reach 350 wickets in T20s.
- Suryakumar Yadav needs 27 runs to reach 4500 runs in the IPL.
- Tilak Varma needs 13 runs to reach 4500 runs in T20s.
Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match.Â
It’s the clash of two struggling teams in IPL 2026. Both teams have similar or different problems to deal with. Both have lost more than they have won. It is tough to chose a winner. Recent history favours CSK, overall history favours MI. Head-to-Head favours MI overall and in Chennai. On paper, MI is a far superior side than CSK but that hasn’t translated into performances on the field. CSK looks weak but have done decently.
Taking everything into consideration, we will still go for MI to upstage CSK since Chepauk is no longer a fortress. But CSK has chances to beat MI as well. Whoever plays better on the night shall win. So, it is all to play for in Chennai later tonight.
