Cheteshwar Pujara, the sturdy batter has been ignored by selectors due to his lack of big runs and now Shubman Gill is groomed at No.3 position. Cheteshwar Pujara was one of the architects in 2018-19 & 2020-21 Test series wins against Australia as his determination was quite commendable in testing conditions as Aussies tried all tricks but couldn’t get him out cheaply.

Pujara should be in the team management’s thoughts for the Australia tour

The former India opener shared a video on his YouTube where he questioned whether Pujara should be in the squad or not, considering his recent form in the domestic circuit.

“Will India consider him for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy? The series before the last one was Pujara’s series. However, last time as well, everyone forgets that while breaking Gabba’s pride his entire body had turned blue by continuously getting hit by balls,” he said.

“So there too Pujara was there and you don’t see a defensive batter in this entire team. Is India still thinking? I am not sure they are but should they?” he observed.

He is cricket’s pujari: Aakash Chopra

Chopra also noted that Pujara is among the cricketing elite based on his first-class double-century count. Only Don Bradman with 37, Walter Hammond with 36 and Elias Hendren with 22 have more first-class double centuries than Pujara. He is also the only active player in the 21st century with more than 15 first-class double hundreds.

“Cheteshwar Pujara now has 18 double centuries. He is cricket’s pujari and his name is Pujara. He is outstanding. Three players are ahead of him still, I was reading a tweet from Circle of Cricket – Don Bradman, Wally Hammond and Patsy Hendren. Herbert Sutcliffe and Mark Ramprakash are below him,” he added.

Aakash Chopra also highlights Pujara’s hunder for runs is ‘unbelievable’.

“18 first-class double centuries – Cheteshwar Pujara sahab, you are different, you are unbelievable. He keeps scoring runs like this always. He is absolutely stellar,” Chopra stated.

Cheteshwar Pujara scored his first double century in November 2008. He also has three triple hundreds in the format. In his 103 Test appearances for India, he scored more than 7195 runs in the format at an average of 43.90 with 19 hundreds. He also scored three double tons in the format for India.

He also has good numbers in Australian conditions, with his 993 runs in 11 Tests coming at an average of 47.28.
