With the first test officially finished between England and Australia, this match had a completely unexpected outcome that helped it finish quite quickly, and also showed why the Aussies dominate cricket. As Australia came out victorious by 8 wickets, they were able to regain all their confidence after the Poms had a significant lead during the previous day’s play.
In a match where it looked like this side was going to need a miracle to have any advantage in this game, their bowling was still without Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, which made this victory all the more impressive. Captain Steve Smith was fantastic at the helm once again because of his ability to play during big moments and make perfect decisions when required.
Meanwhile, for this England side, they will have a lot to think about after getting completely outclassed during this first match. A side that had so many hopes of winning in Australia after years, this was not something their side was expecting to happen, and will really need to go back to the drawing board in order to plan better.
Having returned Jofra Archer, who was extremely key in the 2019 Ashes, and Gus Atkinson to this lineup, it will be interesting to see how much they play because those could potentially be the two most important pieces moving forward. Leading the side was Ben Stokes, and despite him showing true leadership during the first day of play, it almost felt like he was out of options.
England: Battting Lineup Struggled To Build Any Massive Partnerships Until The Very End
On the English side in this match, it was pretty clear that their batsmen were having a tough time building a combination which would completely change this match. As their first innings was pretty poor too, their top-order batsmen ended up doing worse in the 2nd innings, except for Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope. As they had only one of the two partnerships that went for over 20 runs during this period after Zak Crawley got removed first, it was a tremendous left and right-handed combination. Seeing that Duckett was the next wicket lost, he did have a tremendous 28 runs on 40 balls, while looking very composed with his shots after hitting three crisp boundaries around.
Knowing that England were hoping to get him back in form, Pope had another strong 30+ score before being the third wicket lost at 76/3. One of the biggest stories during this innings was that Harry Brook, known as the Bazball leader, ended up getting removed in three balls after Pope. Seeing that unit was already four down and Joe Root departed after another 8-run score, England’s struggles continued when Ben Stokes got caught by Steve Smith.
Although Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson started looking like they were going to create something special, that partnership ended on one of the most shocking Brendan Doggett deliveries, which went straight into Alex Carey’s hands. To close it out, despite Brydon Carse and Atkinson having a 50+ run partnership, while Mark Wood also hit a boundary, this Poms unit was only up by 204 runs.
Australia: Another Bowling Performance That Helped The Aussies Move Into This Match’s Driver’s Seat
For this Aussie bowling attack today, it was pretty clear that today was another average, dominating performance that over 2 billion people got to watch and enjoy. A group that was missing a lot of firepower for this match and needed to make amends quite quickly, they showed why their mindset is something no one should ever question.
As Mitchell Starc was just absolutely fabulous after picking 7 wickets in the first innings, he ended up getting another three in this go-around. It was clear that he was giving up a few more runs, but that was mainly because he got a bit tired, and many lower-order England batters took advantage of a few weaknesses.
Finishing with 12.0 overs, the way he got rid of England’s two biggest batsmen in Ben Stokes and Joe Root was something that lowered the opposing side’s confidence. From the right-end, Scott Boland looked much more in form during these second innings as he was able to continuously bowl at the same line and length. Picking up four of his own wickets in 11.4 overs, the biggest key was that his economy rate went down under 3.00, and was able to recover from a first innings injury.
Out of all of them, though, the most impressive bowler today was Brendan Doggett, who was in his debut, and even though he gave up almost 6 an over, his ability to clean the side with three wickets limited England from scoring more.
Australia: Another Heroic Batting Effort Puts The Aussies Ahead In This Series
After a very tough first innings of a batting where it seemed like everything had come crashing down for this Australian unit, this top four did something remarkable and were able to finish the match with almost no stress. Seeing that openers Travis Head and Jake Weatherald built a nice 75-run partnership, it was more than needed, so this group could get their groove back.
Seeing that the debutant, Weatherald, scored 23 runs and three boundaries, he looked much more composed than the first time he came out to bat. Although he was the first wicket the Aussies lost, his partner in Travis Head, was continuing to ramp up the score from the other end.
Knowing that Marnus Labuschagne would come in and try to answer all the critics correctly, this is exactly what happened today. Seeing that he crossed the half-century mark after a long hiatus from test cricket, it ended up being very impactful in a 117-run partnership with Head that got them near the line.
Looking at Head, he was able to get to another wonderful 100+ score in a big match and showed great touch by hitting 16 fours, plus four sixes. This tactical movement to move him up the order by Steve Smith clearly seemed to work and gave Australia’s star batsmen a final score of 123 after facing just 83 balls. Despite Ollie Pope catching him out late in the match, it was at a time when Australia basically had this match one, and Smith came in to score two runs.
England: These Bowlers Had A Very Woeful Performance Throughout The Day
When looking at this England side, their bowling attack couldn’t contain anything, and even major pieces didn’t make a difference for them. As Jofra Archer had 8 overs bowled during these innings, he gave up nearly 5.63 an over and didn’t pose a wicket-taking threat at all. Knowing that Gus Atkinson was coming in from the same end, he didn’t produce that much either from this side and gave up more than 6.5 an over as well.
It was quite shocking that Mark Wood only got three overs during this match, but also made the sense at this similar period because Carse got two wickets. Closing out, their main spinner in Joe Root, had allowed 12 in his single one over.
