AUS vs BAN: “They Outplayed Us in All Facets”- Pat Cummins Reacts After Bangladesh Crush Australia

Australia’s captain admitted Bangladesh were superior across the four day Darwin Test as the visitors secured their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.

Australia suffered a stunning nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the first Test at Marrara Oval, Darwin, on Sunday, August 16. The result was not just a rare home defeat for Australia, it was Bangladesh’s first-ever Test win on Australian soil, and it came after the visitors controlled the contest across all major phases.

Australian captain Pat Cummins did not shy away from the scale of the defeat, admitting that Bangladesh had simply been the better side.

Bangladesh Set the Tone Early

Australia’s problems began in their first innings. The hosts were bowled out for just 198, allowing Bangladesh to seize control of the match before the Australian batting line-up could settle.

Bangladesh responded with 426, creating a substantial 228 runs first innings lead. Tanzid Hasan scored a century, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed a crucial 65, giving Bangladesh the depth and scoreboard pressure required to dictate the game.

For Australia, Steve Smith’s 71 was the only major contribution in the first innings, highlighting how heavily the batting unit relied on individual resistance rather than sustained partnerships.

Cameron Green’s Century Delays the Inevitable

Australia did show greater resistance in their second innings, largely through Cameron Green, who produced a fighting 104.

His century temporarily kept Bangladesh from wrapping up the contest quickly, but the rest of the batting order could not build enough support around him. Australia eventually folded for 284, leaving Bangladesh with a modest target of just 57 runs.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz was central to Australia’s collapse, claiming 5 for 66 in the second innings. Meanwhile, Hasan Mahmud finished with nine wickets in the match and was named Player of the Match.

Cummins Accepts Australia Were Outplayed

The Australian captain acknowledged that his side had failed to match Bangladesh in every department.

“They outplayed us in all facets,” Pat Cummins admitted after the defeat. He also pointed towards Australia’s batting as an area requiring serious review ahead of the second Test, with the team unable to convert starts into the partnerships needed to withstand Bangladesh’s disciplined attack.

The defeat also raises questions about Australia’s preparation and batting consistency. With Marnus Labuschagne and Jake Weatherald under scrutiny after disappointing performances, Cummins has left the door open for changes before the next Test.

A Historic Warning for Australia

Bangladesh’s victory was more than an upset—it exposed Australia’s vulnerability when their batting failed to produce a substantial first-innings total.

The visitors were patient, disciplined and relentless, while Australia struggled to maintain pressure for long periods. With the second Test to come in Mackay, Australia now face the challenge of responding quickly.

For Bangladesh, however, the message is already clear, this was not a lucky escape. They earned a historic victory by consistently outplaying Australia.
