Bangladesh have been underdogs for a long time in any multi-nation events. They have been dark horses and never been a favourite. Even in this upcoming Asia Cup they are being touted as underdogs and dark horses. Bangladesh have also underachieved a bit as teams like Afghanistan have gone ahead of them in T20Is in particular. This Asia Cup will be a T20 event as we all know. But count Bangladesh out at your own peril.
Under the leadership of Litton Das, Bangladesh have done well in the last few months winning a series against West Indies in West Indies and Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. They also beat Pakistan at home and recently disposed off Netherlands as well. So, they are a team on the rise and are oozing with confidence. But they are in a tough group and must be on their toes to do well in Asia Cup 2025. Here we will try and analyse Bangladesh via a SWOT analysis and see where they stand.
Strengths
Bangladesh’s biggest strength is their captain Litton Das. He is someone who leads from the front and is in decent form as well. He can rally around his troupes and inspire them to do well. Litton will be confident in his headspace as well as to where he stands as a leader as Bangladesh have done well to win series against good teams at home or away from home as well. This will be a massive plus and Litton will hope to lead from the front.
The pace attack of Bangladesh also looks good. Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman have plenty of experience and have the skill to trouble the opposition batters. Shoriful Islam brings in the left-arm angle and can be handy as well and we shouldn’t forget Tanzim Hasan Sakib who is also a very good bowler. He might be behind the other three but is a handy option in these conditions. There is the option of Mohammad Saifuddin if the need arises for Bangladesh.
The spin department looks good with Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan looking likely to do the bulk of the job. Rishad is a quality spinner and can score runs down the order as well. Nasum and Mahedi have been in good form lately. Saif Hassan and Shamim Hossain are also good all-round spin options and may do a job if given a chance.
In the batting, apart from Litton Das, they have a dynamic duo at the top in Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon. Down the order they have talented players like Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali who can act as finishers for the side. The batting looks sorted but there is a bit of dependency on Litton Das to perform more often than not.
Weaknesses
An apparent weakness in the squad will be their batting is dependent on the batting of Litton Das. The captain is expected to rally its troupes as a leader and as a batter. He bats at crucial Number 3 spot and must get runs on a consistent basis. The opening duo of Emon and Tanzid are talented but can buckle under pressure. The pressure of playing on the big stage can get to them. Even in the spin department, Rishad, Nasum and Mahedi might do a job but Saif Hassan and Shamim Hossain might buckle under pressure.
Bangladesh can be unpredictable and mercurial. They can buckle under pressure. Sometimes, in a close contest they falter due to lack of temperament. This can come back to haunt them in the tournament. Yes, Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy have done well, but not in the big stage so how will they perform remains to be seen. If the batting fails, then the bowling could fall under pressure. Pacers will take care of themselves due to the experience factor.
We get the feeling that the pitches could be a telling factor for Bangladesh. If the pitches are of 165-170 types then Bangladesh will be in the game. But in case, we get flat decks, then the Tigers may struggle chasing 200 and beyond. So, that is an interesting thing to observe about Bangladesh.
Opportunities
Opportunities are plenty for Bangladesh. They have the golden opportunity to punch above their weight and perform in the big stage as no experts are talking about them being contenders. It’s an opportunity for Litton Das to show his leadership credentials and leave an everlasting impression on this tournament. It’s an opportunity for the two openers to do well and for Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy in the middle order to prove they can perform at this level.
It’s an opportunity for Taskin, Mustafizur and company to prove their mettle and stamp their class on the tournament. The spinners have a golden opportunity especially Saif and Shamim to prove they belong at this level. It’s an opportunity to shine in this continental event. Bangladesh have never won Asia Cup ever having being runners-up in 2012, 2016 and 2018.
It’s a big opportunity for Bangladesh as a nation under the leadership of Litton Das to win Asia Cup 2025 and win it for the first time ever. Litton believes he has the team and now we have to see whether he can deliver because the Tigers are at the group of Death at the moment in the first round.
Threats
The biggest threat for Bangladesh will be the group that they have been placed with. It’s in Group B also called the Group of Death where we have Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Hong Kong as the other three teams. While a win against Hong Kong is guaranteed considering Bangladesh’s recent form, games against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will be mouth-watering. Only 2 out of the aforementioned teams goes into the Super 4.
Bangladesh face the danger of having one bad day and that could prove to be costly as every game will count in that group. A slip up could be detrimental and we have seen them under pressure crumbling and self-destructing. So, Bangladesh has to watch out for this and make sure that they don’t crumble under pressure. The threats come from the group stage only and if they do well they enter the Super 4 stage and then they can take it from there.
Predicted Outcome for Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2025
It’s very difficult predicting which team will qualify from the Group of Death. It could be any combination of two teams out of the three with Hong Kong definitely missing out. But looking at current form and the streak of wins achieved by Litton Das, we feel that Bangladesh will find a way in reaching the Super 4s. It will be premature to say whether they can win the tournament or not, but reaching the Super 4s will be the first target and an achievement of sorts for them considering the group that they have been clubbed with.
What Lies Ahead for Bangladesh
Bangladesh starts their Asia Cup campaign against Hong Kong on 11th September at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Then they play on 13th September against Sri Lanka at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Their final Group game is against Afghanistan on the 16th of September also at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. So, they play all their games in Abu Dhabi and all their games will start at 8PM IST.
It is good that Bangladesh are starting against Hong Kong so that they can make a winning start before sterner challenges await them against Sri Lanka who will be playing their first game on 13th. Bangladesh will face Afghanistan at the end and then see if they can qualify for the next stage. So, let us wait and see how things unfold and how the Bangla Tigers perform in Asia Cup 2025. Will they be underachievers again or will they punch above their weight to glory? Only time will tell.
