Asia Cup 2025: 3 Reasons For Bangladesh’s Crushing Loss To Sri Lanka

Bangladesh crashed to a demoralizing defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in a Group B clash at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Ever since losing the toss, they were on the back foot and never really competed against the 6-time champions. Bangladesh had a few moments here and there but were beaten by the better team on the night. Bangladesh had their problems and we will try and list out three reasons why they lost so badly to Sri Lanka.

Losing 3/30 in the powerplay dented Bangladesh badly

Bangladesh were on the back foot straightaway after losing the toss. They lost their two openers Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon for ducks in two different overs as Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera bowled wicket maidens to kick things off. Bangladesh were 0/2 in 2 overs and then adding to the woes, Towhid Hridoy after being given a reprieve by Charith Asalanka was run out by Kamil Mishara. This meant 3 wickets lost quickly.

Bangladesh never really recovered from these three jolts that they suffered. Litton Das hung in there for a while after powerplay, but the Tigers had lost 5 wickets for 53 runs inside 10 overs and never really recovered as the game was done by now. Yes, Jaker Ali and Shamim Hossain tried hard and took them close to 140, but the score would not be enough as Bangladesh were at least 20-30 runs short despite the recovery by the two batters. This was because they lost too many wickets in the powerplay and beyond.

Looking ahead to their next game against Afghanistan, who are a quality bowling side, Bangladesh needs to up their game to do well and beat them. As a loss against Afghanistan will mean the end of the road for Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2025. So, Bangladesh batting which is largely dependent on Litton Das has to come out of his shadows and do well starting first from the openers and then from the others around him. It can’t be always about Litton Das alone all the time.

Dropped catch of Kamil Mishara comes back to haunt Bangladesh

After scoring 139 on the board, Bangladesh needed early wickets and they got one early dismissing Kusal Mendis for 3 to Mustafizur Rahman. Mishara walked in to join Nissanka. They started building a partnership and then a big moment came in the game. Mishara was dropped by Mahedi Hasan, a sitter at mid-off off Shoriful Islam and this proved to be really costly.

Mishara made an unbeaten 46 off 32 balls and built a match-winning 95-run stand with Pathum Nissanka to take the game away from Bangladesh. Nissanka played well too and although Sri Lanka lost a few wickets towards the end, but they looked untroubled at the crease and got the job done in the end. But things might have been different had that catch being taken. Catches win matches as they say and Bangladesh would rue that.

Going ahead, Bangladesh needs to sharpen their fielding if they want to beat Afghanistan. Ground fielding was decent but the catching left a lot to be desired. One catch missed could always prove to be costly and that was the case with Bangladesh. One hopes they hold onto their catches in what will be a must-win clash against Afghanistan coming next week.

Inability to dismiss Pathum Nissanka early hurt Bangladesh

Pathum Nissanka is a key player for the Sri Lankan cricket team and Bangladesh needed to dismiss him early to have a foot in the door in this game defending only 139 runs. They did get Kusal Mendis early, but Nissanka was untroubled at the crease and has been the man in form for Sri Lanka across all formats. He was in great form against Zimbabwe and carried that form in Abu Dhabi last night.

Pathum Nissanka played the role of the aggressor and played all around the ground. Mishara complimented him well, but Nissanka was the show stopper in the end. He scored 50 off 34 balls and played good cricketing shots. Bangladesh lacked planning against him and seemed to have no answers in tackling him. It was a sad sight as the bowlers even did not make a match out of it either. They needed to be more incisive and clinical and that is one thing they lacked today.

Looking ahead to that big Afghanistan game, Bangladesh needs to be more incisive and clinical with their bowling strategies and get the job done. They need to get early wickets and put the pressure on the opposition. If given an opportunity, they should run through sides and create more pressure out there. They failed to do that whatsoever and so, lost by a huge margin in Abu Dhabi.
