At the recently concluded BCCI AGM, it’s quite clear that the future of Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma is absolutely cleared till ODI WC 2027. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia brushed aside all the rumors of a potential retirement of Rohit Sharma from ODIs. Rohit Sharma was under the pump throughout the ODI series against England, as a ton in the 3rd ODI silenced all the news of Rohit hanging up his boots in ODI cricket.
Let’s look at the potential repercussions that may happen in Indian cricket given how Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli fare till ODI WC 2027.
Animosity between Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir & Rohit Sharma
The 3 ODIs commence from 27th September, as these are all crucial for ODI WC 2027. Ajit Agarkar, in a press conference, had said clearly that Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma are non-committal towards ODI WC 2027. We should not forget that the captaincy was snatched away from Rohit ahead of the Australia ODI series, with the management stating that it can’t afford 3 different captains for three formats.
Rohit Sharma’s age is 39, whereas Virat is 37. The duo has been a great servant of the Indian cricket team; with 14-15 months left until ODI WC 2027, it seems highly unlikely that the duo would announce retirement or be forced to hang up their boots. The ODI side is quite a well-oiled machine with a great blend of youth & experience in the form of KL Rahul, Shubman Gill & Hardik Pandya, who can take the team out of a dangerous position
If we look closely at the coaching staff of the Indian cricket team, Ryan ten Doeschate (*assistant coach) and T Dillip (*fielding coach) were not handed contract extensions. Subhadeep Ghosh is the new fielding coach, replacing T Dilip. Even after a hammering against Ireland & England, head coach Gautam Gambhir wasn’t shown the door. It would be better not to speak about the downfall of India in home Tests; still, Gambhir is getting chances to improve & same applies to chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
It’s quite clear that Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir & Rohit Sharma don’t gel well. We are all aware of the fact that Rohit Sharma was fuming after not playing the SCG Test at BGT 2024-25, even when the team was 1-2 behind. Rohit’s form wasn’t that stupendous as well in Tests after failure against Kiwis by 0-3, but a skipper opting out of the 5th Test match against the Aussies wasn’t something very normal.
What lies ahead for Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma for ODI WC 2027
Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli have to take extremely good care of their fitness. Till the ODI WC 2027, Rohit would be 40 years of age & Virat 38; the duo would be highly tested on the fast & bouncy pitches of South Africa, which can be a nightmare for any batter. Their experience would be vital, since it’s a long tournament; the management might adopt a rotation policy and give them breaks before ODI WC 2027 just to keep them fresh.
Ajit Agarkar’s contract extension post September 2026 is not officially announced. Agarkar’s expertise would undoubtedly be needed, or can BCCI drop him just when ODI WC 2027 is around the corner? The new selector would make wholesale changes and try new combinations, as the team’s bonding can be ruined. BCCI has an intricate task ahead of it; reportedly, players aren’t happy with Agarkar’s selection policies, so his axe, we can say, is on the cards.
Rohit Sharma was very much devastated after the 2023 ODI WC final; we can say that no one wants the trophy more than him. If during ODI WC 2027, anyone gets injured, then recovery won’t be easy as the players are at the back end of career. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has given clarity that Virat & Rohit are in the plans for ODI WC 2027 & according to sources with knowledge, it is believed that a separate fitness roadmap is being formulated for the two stalwarts.
The internal politics of the BCCI are somewhat annoying for Indian cricket team fans & also for Virat & Rohit. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has admitted the fact that the Indian team might play additional ODIs outside the FTP, as the team might get practice for a marquee tournament. We can say that BCCI is trying its best to keep the legendary duo in proper shape for the tournament.
