Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin appeared slightly concerned about Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar‘s performance and pace after the second T20I concluded against New Zealand. While India won the game, it was another difficult outing for the veteran pacer Kumar. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar has bowled well in patches, Ashwin reckoned that the execution overall was not up to the mark yet.
Ravichandran Ashwin also pointed out that the veteran’s pace was not as high, and it could prove to be a major issue if he did not increase it. The former India all-rounder felt an increase in pace would help Bhuvneshwar Kumar become more lethal.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s concerning view on Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Speaking on his own YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat, Ravichandran Ashwin said, “Bhuvneshwar and Arshdeep started well. Bhuvi is missing some luck. He is not executing very well in certain pockets. I have backed him and wanted his comeback. But if he bowls at this pace, it is difficult for him. This is my concern. He has skills and can make the ball swing. But he has to nudge 134. 135, 136. Then he will become more dangerous. That’s not happening.”
Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a good first over in the second T20I as well but failed to impress overall. He conceded 50 runs from his overs at an economy rate of 12.5. just picking up just one wicket.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar needs to excel to continue his journey with Team India
Returning to international cricket after a gap of 4 years, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s comeback to the national team has been underwhelming and nothing compared to what was expected. The veteran Indian pacer had a tough time as he conceded 0/49 in the first game in 4 overs and followed it up with 1/50 in 4 overs in the second game.
While Bhuvi has bowled well in patches and phases, he has not proved to be as impactful as we know he can be. Having said that, it has also been argued that he must be given more time, as it is too early for all of us to write him off after a couple of games.
However, with the amount of competition happening in the Indian team, Bhuvneshwar Kumar must pick himself up quickly before he runs out of chances. If he fails to impress in the upcoming games, this may well be his last series as a player for India. To retain and extend his comeback trail, the veteran pacer will have to make a strong comeback in the remainder of the series. If he fails to do so, he will be dropped and gone for good.
Only time will tell whether Bhuvneshwar can retain his place in the side. He is an experienced campaigner, but he needs to put in performances to show the world that he belongs at this level. Only performances on the field will get him through this phase. If he gives some impactful performances in the remaining three games, then Kumar will be considered for future assignments. Otherwise, he won’t be at all. So, the next three matches are critical for Bhuvneshwar and its fans.
India next play in Wellington, followed by Auckland, before finishing in Hamilton. It will be imperative that Bhuvneshwar does well and supports his side well. Yes, India have won without his contribution, but India would love to have a match-winning performance from Kumar. He has the skills and experience, but as Ashwin said may have to increase his pace. If he can do that, then he may become lethal in the coming games. Bhuvneshwar Kumar firing on all cylinders could be the best news Indian cricket desperately needs going ahead.
