Indian cricket team is going through a rough patch in white ball post the T20 WC 2026 triumph. The way Men in Blue lost T20I series to Ireland & England with a 6-0 defeat has raised questions over the team’s performance & recent triumph. There were a lot of rumors of Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the ODI circuit post the England series, but that was completely cleared by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
A lot is happening in Indian cricket, which has made unnecessary headlines. The side under the reins of head coach Gautam Gambhir’s T20 WC 2026 title was a fearless one, but the way Ireland & England thrashed India was an eye-opener for billions of people. Under the new T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer, the side didn’t gel well, as the shift in leadership from Suryakumar Yadav has somewhat disturbed the team dynamics, we can say.
Something big on the cards?
As reported by Cricbuzz, BCCI is about to have a meeting on Thursday (03rd September) with top brass. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and CoE head VVS Laxman. It is believed that the recent kind of downfall of the Indian cricket team is the main agenda of the meeting. BCCI’s AGM, though, is on 18th September, so we can say this meeting is a kind of foresee the future.
“The BCCI is currently observing the performance of the Indian T20 team, which has not been up to the mark in the ongoing series against England. However, this is not something abnormal and can happen in international cricket. We consider it a purely bad phase,” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia had said after the England ODI series.
Future on the line for Rohit Sharma?
Unknowingly or knowingly, the main agenda would be Rohit Sharma’s future in ODIs. Rohit Sharma has openly confirmed that he wants to play in the marquee ODI WC 2027. We should not forget that Rohit Sharma smashed a barnstorming knock of 138 in the 3rd ODI against Britain, which silenced all rumors. India undoubtedly lost the ODI series against England by 1-2, but world cricket witnessed the old flair of Rohit Sharma, who dismantled the opposition completely.
There have been many reports & sources with knowledge as well that Rohit Sharma is not in the plans for ODI WC 2027. BCCI has refuted the sources every now & then; but we have to be a bit realistic here: Rohit, as of now, is 39 years of age & by time of WC 2027, he would be 40. If Rohit Sharma is in plans of ODI WC 2027, then will BCCI make him skip IPL 2027 as 2 and half month tourney takes a toll mentally & physically, so will Rohit Sharma be able to keep his fitness for that long?
Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli’s future in the hands of the selection panel & BCCI
Last year, out of nowhere, Rohit Sharma bid adieu to Tests &Â Virat Kohli followed it very soon. It’s quite crystal clear that if one of Rohit or Virat hangs up their boots in ODIs, then the other will follow without thinking a second. Virat & Rohit, though, are very pivotal for India’s leadership group despite having no official responsibility, as the duo can be seen setting fielders & helping Shubman Gill on field with tactics & strategy.
Cricbuzz reported that Shubman Gill has also been given power, along with Ajit Agarkar & Gautam Gambhir, to decide the future of Virat & Rohit, as things can get awkward given Agarkar & Gambhir don’t have a great, healthy relationship with Virat & Rohit. Even if we argue that BCCI has absolute power over broadcasters, but its all about viewership for the game & broadcasters.
We have seen that no player is above BCCI, as it has its hegemony and dominance. With ODI WC 2027 in 13 months’ time, the tournament schedule is about to be revealed in early 2027; in this time frame, if there’s retirement news of Rohit, then it can be said we will witness a flood of disaster on social media & among stakeholders. A lot is at stake for Virat & Rohit after the heart-wrenching ICC ODI WC 2023 final defeat, as the duo wants a last chance to get their hands on silverware together & fulfill the dream of a billion people; will BCCI give them? Only time will tell, or will the board dictate, as they have been doing?
What lies ahead in the meeting
Out of the blue, Suryakumar Yadav’s T20I captaincy was snatched away post T20 WC 2026 triumph. The way India fared against Ireland & England was very much shocking, as it looked like the team lacked motivation rather than performance & skill set. Ireland made headlines by cleanly sweeping India by 2-0, which was a tough pill to swallow as the reigning champions were brutally exposed. Gambhir’s tactics were questioned, as the meeting could emphasize making slight adjustments to the brand of cricket.
There have been talks going on that Shreyas Iyer might be dropped from the ODI side. This development is not confirmed, but from sources it is believed that Tilak Varma can be groomed to be a middle-order batter. It’s quite perplexing given Shreyas Iyer is vice-captain of the ODI side, as dropping him won’t be easy for the selection panel, given the ODI series against West Indies is set to start on 27th September in India.
There is a kind of perception building in media outlets that BCCI is looking for a new opening pair in the form of Shubman Gill & Yashasvi Jaiswal for ODI WC 2027. Yashasvi Jaiswal can be the next superstar of the Indian cricket team, but the question is: can BCCI take that decision when the ODI WC is banging on the door? There’s no doubt that BCCI can easily field 10 quality teams across the globe given the talent & depth, but ODI WC 2027 is about to be a spectacle beyond expectations.
India’s batting unit is very much dependent on Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma. The onus is on the duo to not only lay the foundation but also to take the team over the finish line. If Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma bid adieu to the ODI format, then there are ‘n’ chances that there would be repercussions in the whole permutations & combincations as it won’t be less than havoc. We will get to know a lot of things with the BCCI top brass meeting tomorrow, as the ball is in the BCCI’s court for keeping the game lively & vibrant.
