SL vs IND: “Test Wins Don’t Come Easy”- Shubman Gill Aims WTC Final

India’s captain Shubman Gill celebrated a crucial 165-run victory over Sri Lanka while making it clear that the bigger target remains a place in the World Test Championship final. India’s Test campaign has received a much-needed boost.

Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in Galle, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and, more importantly, keeping their World Test Championship 2025-27  final ambitions firmly alive.

This victory is delightful- Shubman Gill

For Gill, however, the victory was not simply about moving ahead in the series. It was another step towards a much bigger objective.

“That (WTC final) is the ultimate goal. Test wins do not come easy and this one is delightful,” Gill said after the victory

A Win India Had to Earn

The 165-run margin may suggest a comfortable victory, but the Test was far more competitive than the final scoreline indicates. India made 462 in their first innings, with Devdutt Padikkal producing a superb maiden Test century of 167. His innings gave India the platform to put Sri Lanka under scoreboard pressure.

Sri Lanka, however, fought back through Sonal Dinusha, who scored a century in the first innings and helped the hosts recover from early trouble. India eventually secured a 178-run first-innings lead, but the visitors still had to complete the job on a challenging Galle surface.

Manav Suthar Turns the Game

The biggest difference between the two sides was India’s ability to take wickets when they mattered most.

Young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar delivered a breakthrough performance, finishing with 10 wickets for 131 runs. His second-innings figures of 6 for 55 dismantled Sri Lanka’s resistance and turned India’s advantage into victory.

The performance was particularly significant because this was only Manav Suthar’s second Test. His control, patience and ability to extract turn made him the standout bowler of the match.

Shubman Gill was quick to recognise the impact, describing Suthar as a promising player who could serve Indian cricket for a long time.

India’s Second-Innings Gamble Pays Off

India’s second innings was not without risk. The visitors were bowled out for 193, but Shubman Gill was not overly concerned about the collapse.

The captain explained that India were aiming for a lead of around 400 and wanted enough time to bowl Sri Lanka out, particularly with weather interruptions threatening to reduce the available playing time.

That aggressive approach meant India lost wickets, but the calculation ultimately worked. Sri Lanka were set 362 to win, and India’s bowlers had enough time to finish the job.

WTC Qualification Becomes the Bigger Picture

The victory also carries importance beyond the two-match Sri Lanka series.

India entered the Galle Test needing to rebuild momentum in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle after a difficult previous assignment. Following the victory, India remained fifth in the WTC standings with a 53.33 points percentage, while Australia, South Africa and Bangladesh occupied the positions above them.

That means one victory does not guarantee anything—but it gives India valuable momentum.

For Shubman Gill, the message is therefore straightforward: the Galle victory matters, but the WTC final is the destination. And with Manav Suthar emerging as a new match-winner and Devdutt Padikkal making a spectacular return, India have begun their campaign with exactly the kind of performance they needed.
