Fresh off their two consecutive losses in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will aim to get back to winning ways when they clash with their arch-rivals, the Mumbai Indians (MI), in RCB’s second home venue in Raipur. The IPL returns to Raipur after a gap of 10 years, which is acting as RCB’s second home venue this season. The defending champions will play two matches at this venue as the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium plays host to this crucial clash against the Mumbai Indians.
RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, will aim to make the home ground their own and know that a slip-up here could jeopardise their chances of playoffs, let alone a top two berth, as they are now in 4th place. A win for the Bold Army will take them back to the summit of the table. That’s how this match matters for both teams. MI, playing for pride with mathematical hopes still alive, but will want to win as much as they can and spoil the party of others before the season ends.
Overview
Match 54 of IPL 2026 is a crucial clash for both teams, being played in Raipur on Sunday evening. MI are just one defeat away from officially getting eliminated from the season. As things stand, they are in 9th place on the points table with six points from ten games, having won three games and lost seven of them. For RCB, they find themselves in a dangerous territory. It appears they are taking things for granted, especially recently. They are fourth on the points table, with 12 points from 10 matches, having won six and lost four games.
Gujarat Titans’ win over Rajasthan Royals on Saturday has made it difficult for the rest of the teams in the middle. Punjab Kings, RCB, RR and Chennai Super Kings are going neck-to-neck for every point. So, if CSK beat Lucknow Super Giants in the afternoon fixture, it will further increase pressure on other teams, including RCB, who will look to deliver a knockout blow to MI and get back to winning ways. Two more points on Sunday will see the defending champions climb to the top of the points table.
RCB are coming off back-to-back defeats. In their last outing, they lost to LSG by 9 runs in a rain-curtailed contest at Ekana Stadium. They were on the receiving end of a Mitchell Marsh power show amidst the regular rain delays, as their in-form bowling attack was taken to the cleaners. Amidst the run fest, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was playing in his 200th IPL game, and Krunal Pandya returned with economical spells. Rasikh Salam Dar, Suyash Sharma, Romario Shepherd and Josh Hazlewood were quite expensive.
Chasing the DLS revised target of 213 in 19 overs, RCB were on the back foot from the get-go. Jacob Bethell continued to have a lean patch, while Virat Kohli, for the first time since 2023, was knocked out for a duck. Devdutt Padikkal tried to rebuild but didn’t have the same fluency he’d shown earlier in the tournament. Skipper Rajat Patidar led from the front with a sizzling half-century. Jitesh Sharma’s struggling season showed no signs of relenting. Tim David’s cameo got the chase under control, but Krunal and Shepherd failed to finish things off under pressure.
RCB need to bowl together as a group, and the likes of Bethell and Jitesh badly need some runs. They can’t simply get on the field and run away with two points.
On the other hand, MI are having a forgettable season, but they will take confidence from their thumping six-wicket win over LSG in their last game. It was another dismal outing for their bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, who had another wicketless game. Corbin Bosch and Raghu Sharma bowled well, while the rest of the group went for runs. However, LSG’s middle order couldn’t quite get going after the top order went berserk, leaving MI to chase down only 229 at the Wankhede.
Ryan Rickelton set the stage on fire with another whirlwind knock, while Rohit Sharma, returning to the team after a hamstring injury, showed why he is still the best opener for the five-time champions. Both scored in the 80s, adding 143 for the first wicket and setting the tone. Tilak Varma and stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t get going again, but Naman Dhir and Will Jacks did the rest, helping MI to cruise home with more than an over to spare. MI’s bowling and middle order need to step up if they are to put on a show in Raipur.
The last meeting at Wankhede saw the visitors win by 18 runs in a high-scoring game. Half-centuries from Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, and Patidar and a cameo from David saw RCB smash 240/4, before a decent enough bowling performance put MI behind in the run chase, although Sherfane Rutherford’s late surge got them close to the RCB total. It was the same game in which Rohit injured his hamstring and then missed a few games.
RCB’s new home will be buzzing like a beehive as RO-KO takes the centre stage once again on a Sunday evening. Rain is also a factor on the match day, after the heavens broke down on the match eve and interrupted the practice on multiple occasions. Hardik Pandya will be a doubtful starter with a call on his availability to be taken at toss time. Surya has joined the squad and will be available for selection after serving paternity leave. For RCB, Phil Salt continues to be sidelined with a finger injury.
There could be tactical changes for RCB to boost their squad, and the same for MI. So, can RCB complete a rare league double over MI and come back to winning ways, or will MI give RCB a hat-trick of losses to jeopardise their playoff chances? Only time will tell with no weather interruption, hopefully.
Head-To-Head
RCB and MI have played against each other on 35 occasions. MI holds the edge, winning 19 while RCB has won 16. In the last 10 matches, though, it is 7-3 in RCB’s favour. RCB has won the last two meetings against MI, both in Mumbai in 2025 and 2026.
Pitch & Weather ReportÂ
The pitch in Raipur will be a fresh pitch and not the traditional slow ones on offer. This pitch is expected to be good for batting. That could be challenged by the rains that pelted down on Saturday. Sunday’s weather, thankfully, is set to be fair with the temperatures expected to go up to 40 degrees Celsius during the day and 24 degrees at night. The last IPL match was played here in 2016. Only two T20Is have been played here since January 2018. So, a few unknown factors will be on mind for the pitch.
Predicted/Probable Playing XIs for both teams
Here, we will try to predict the playing XIs of both sides.
RCB XI: Jacob Bethell, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (c), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Tim David, Krunal Pandya, Romario Shepherd/Venkatesh Iyer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Suyash Sharma, Josh Hazlewood.
MI XI: Ryan Rickelton (wk), Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (c)/Corbin Bosch, Will Jacks, Raj Angad Bawa/Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur/Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash
Virat Kohli: It goes without saying that in a big game, the biggest players will be in the spotlight. Virat Kohli has had a good run this IPL, but got out for a silver duck in the previous game. With this being a big-ticket game and so much at stake for RCB, Virat will be eager to go tonight against MI and make a statement. It has been seen that when Virat does well, RCB does well and vice versa and the King will be up for it today.
Josh Hazlewood: Josh Hazlewood has blown hot and cold this season. In the last two games that RCB lost, he was taken to the cleaners. The games that Hazlewood has done well, RCB’s bowling has looked good. But in games, where he has been taken to the cleaners, RCB has struggled to do well as a bowling group and lost. So, in a big game, you want your big stars to fire. So, RCB will be hoping he stands up and eases the load off Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Rohit Sharma: MI’s most dependable player, Rohit Sharma, missed a lot of games due to injury. But Rohit came back in the last match as an Impact Player, and in the chase of 230, Rohit shone and showed why he is needed for MI. In a big game, Rohit, like Virat, is known to step it up. If MI does well and upstage RCB tonight, we expect Rohit to have a significant role in it. Rohit can take the game away from the opposition.
Jasprit Bumrah: Jasprit Bumrah has gone cold in the IPL 2026. With just 3 wickets in 10 games and a high economy rate, Bumrah has underperformed so far. The campaign might be as good as over. But Bumrah is a big-match player. He always steps up in crunch games. If Bumrah comes to the party, MI will be a hard team to beat even for RCB. So, it’s pertinent that Bumrah does well and will be a key performer in this match.
Key Stats/Records to look out for in this clash
- Virat Kohli has scored over 1,000 runs against the Mumbai Indians, making him the most crucial batter to watch out for.
- Rohit Sharma recently reached 6000 runs in IPL for MI.
- Ryan Rickelton is known for hitting huge maximum sixes.
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the key with the new ball, showing vintage form.
Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match.Â
It is a big-ticket game. Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses different from each other. Overall, head-to-head favours MI. Recent Head-to-Head favours RCB. The team in better form overall is RCB, but they have lost their last two games. MI won their last game. MI’s hopes hang by a thread; RCB can go to the top should they win tonight.
If everything is taken into consideration, MI has a good chance of upstaging RCB, but no guarantee will win the game. At this stage, it’s too close to call, and it’s better not to pick a winner at this stage. The team that plays better on the night shall get the win.
