Pre-tournament favourites and the team that redefines T20 cricket England had a massive wake-up call at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as they went down to dangerous West Indies by 30 runs. In a battle of two-time champions vs two-time champions, West Indies triumphed outplaying England in all facets of the game. England started well but then couldn’t finish the job properly as they lacked in areas which will concern them looking ahead to the tournament while West Indies made it 2 wins out of 2 games.
There were a few areas where England lacked in Mumbai and we will try and list them for you as well where they went wrong.
Conceding 66 runs in the last 5 overs for the loss of 5 wickets exposed England’s death bowling.Â
England decided to chase which was the right way to go in Mumbai and they did start well getting both the openers Shai Hope and Brandon King in 7 balls. Thereafter, Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase did counter-attack but England kept chipping away with Hetmyer dismissed inside the powerplay as the powerplay score was 55/3 in 6 overs. Thereafter, Adil Rashid bowled a great spell picking up 2 wickets both in middle phase as England kept it under check with West Indies at 130/5 in 15 overs.
West Indies upped the ante in the death overs phase and this is where England lost the plot to a great degree. Too may soft balls were given in the hitting arc and Sherfane Rutherford took full advantage of it as he looked to be in the zone in Mumbai. He was hitting them to all parts of the ground and he was ably supported by Jason Holder who made 33 off 17 balls as he tore apart Jofra Archer as well. This meant that West Indies accelerated and got maybe 20 more than what they ought to have got. 197 was gettable but it could have been less.
England despite this setback should make it to the next stage as they have Scotland and Italy to come in Kolkata but they need to look at death bowling as it was a problem against Nepal where Sam Curran saved them with the ball. The death bowling could become an issue in Super 8s against more established teams and if England are not careful, they may suffer the same fate they suffered last night.
Losing 5/68 in overs 7-15 and to spin dented England.Â
Chasing 197 for the win on a flat deck with less dew, England came out all guns blazing with Philip Salt leading the way and Buttler giving him company from the other end. Salt was severe on Jason Holder hitting him for 24 runs in one over. Salt did fall for 30 off 14 balls to Romario Shepherd. But Jacob Bethell and Jos Buttler made sure England did not lose the momentum and stayed ahead of the required rate as the Three Lions had the better of the powerplay scoring 67/1 in 6 overs.
But in a chase of 197, powerplay is important no doubt, but the middle phase is of utmost importance and this is where West Indies outclassed England. The spinners came onto bowl as England started losing wickets at regular intervals. Jos Buttler fell to Roston Chase immediately after powerplay was over and very soon, the floodgates opened. Gudakesh Motie was the star with 3 wickets while Roston Chase picked up 2 wickets and Akeal Hosein 1 wicket.
Tom Banton was the next to go and very soon Bethell went. Brook and Curran tried to rebuild things but the captain soon fell and thereafter, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton all fell like nine pins as England lost wickets at regular intervals. They lost 5/68 in the middle phase of 9 overs. Moreover, they lost 6 wickets for 94 runs in 12 overs of spin of the West Indies. This is where the chase was lost and then in the death overs, Sam Curran tried his best but lost partners as the rate climbed up and it was impossible to achieve.
We are assuming England will make the Super 8s. Should they make it, they will play all their matches in Sri Lanka where the ball turns a lot more. They need to be wary about playing spin as these numbers from yesterday’s game is not promising. So, England needs to look at that aspect seriously if they want to do well as a team. Their batting against Sri Lanka too struggled in that last T20I. An area to work on for England.
Jofra Archer’s underwhelming returns a concern for England.Â
Jofra Archer is the spearhead of the England attack and is expected to deliver more often than not. But we know he blows hot and cold now and then. So far, in this tournament he has blown cold rather than hot and that is a big worry for England. England’s bowling is touted to be weak the pace bowling in particular apart from Archer who has the experience of playing in Mumbai and other venues in India.
But Archer’s form has been a tad underwhelming in this tournament which England would want to get right before the crucial stage of the tournament starts. Archer did pick up an early wicket of Shai Hope but then he went for plenty as Jason Holder took toll of him alongside Sherfane Rutherford as he went for 21 in an over. He finished with 1/48 in 4 overs which is very underwhelming from Archer’s standpoint. It is not just a one-off. Against Nepal in the previous game, Archer went for 42 runs in 4 overs picking up a wicket as he went for 22 in an over as Nepal took tole of him.
Even against Sri Lanka on slow pitches in Pallekele, Archer went for 42 runs despite picking up 2 wickets. In another match, he went for 22 in 3 overs despite not picking up a wicket. Archer is yet to hit his straps this tournament. He may well do so as England have relatively easy opponents against Scotland and Italy to come. But against bigger sides, Archer and England will be hoping he gets back to his roaring best and take wickets at regular intervals. That will go a long way in solving a lot of problems for England.
What Lies Ahead.Â
So, West Indies are topping Group C with 2 wins out of 2 games. They have got Nepal and Italy to come while England goes to Kolkata where they will first face Scotland on Saturday afternoon before taking on Italy at the same venue to complete their group stage. 3 matches come our way on Thursday as Sri Lanka takes on Oman in a Group B clash in Pallekele at 11 AM IST followed by Nepal vs Italy in a Group C clash in Mumbai at 3 PM IST.
