2009 champions Pakistan will aim to get off to a winning start in ICC T20 WC 2026 when they face Netherlands in the tournament’s opener at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Pakistan who boasts a good blend of youth and experience with the right squad for the conditions in Sri Lanka will look to guard against complacency against a Netherlands side that can be dangerous on their given day.
Pakistan under Salman Ali Agha has a good squad and has the arsenal to challenge big teams. Babar Azam and Naseem Shah are back alongside Shaheen Shah Afridi while Haris Rauf and Mohammad Rizwan has missed the bus. But they have players that can play to potential and beat the Dutch side. Netherlands led by Scott Edwards has good names like Bas de Leede, Roelof van der Merve, Max O’Dowd to name a few and will try to fight hard in the tournament.
The stage is set for an interesting battle to unfold in SSC in Colombo for the tournament opener.
Overview
The stage is set for one month of high-octane cricket as the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup kicks off in Colombo on Saturday February 7th. The Men in Green Pakistan faces the Netherlands in the curtain raiser at the Sinhalese Sports Club, setting the tone for a tournament that will feature 20 teams competing across India and Sri Lanka for the ultimate prize i.e. the T20 World Cup trophy.
Pakistan endured a torrid campaign in the previous edition, a disappointment that triggered a rethink in both personnel and approach. They were knocked out in the first round after defeats to India and the USA, though they did manage wins over Canada and Ireland.
The changes since then have been significant. Babar Azam is no longer the captain, while Mohammad Rizwan does not feature in the squad. Salman Ali Agha has taken over the leadership, promoted himself to number three, and embraced an ultra aggressive batting approach. That shift paid immediate dividends as the Men in Green whitewashed Australia just days before the World Cup.
Babar Azam has found a new role in the side, he is shifted to the middle order. Sahibzada Farhan has had a lean patch in the recent past but the management has trusted him to deliver the goods in Sri Lanka. Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead the pace attack, supported by Salman Mirza and Naseem Shah. Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz provide the spin-bowling all-round options, while Faheem Ashraf slots in as the seam bowling all-rounder.
On the other hand, Scott Edwards will lead the Netherlands. Logan van Beek, Colin Ackermann and Bas de Leede are the all-rounders who have helped the Dutch side to be a force among the associate nations. Max O’Dowd will be the key at the top of the order, alongside Michael Levitt, while Roelof van der Merwe brings a wealth of experience to the side. The spin duo of Aryan Dutt and Saqib Zulfiqar will need to come good, especially with pitches likely to assist the spinners.
The Dutch are known for their habit of springing upsets at World Cups. They did so recently at the ODI World Cup, defeating South Africa and Bangladesh, and have also beaten England at the global event in the past. The question remains can the Netherlands start their campaign with a win and stun Pakistan or will Pakistan start the campaign with a routine victory?
Head-To-Head
Pakistan and Netherlands have met each other twice, both in previous World Cups and both the games were at World Cups in 2009 and 2022 and both were won by the Men in Green easily. Will things change this time? Only time will tell.
Pitch & Weather Report
The pitch at the Sinhalese Sports Club is unknown to many. They have hosted only two T20Is both in February 2010 where in one match 176 was a winning score and in another game 143 was a winning score. The warm-up fixture on February 4th between Ireland and Pakistan was washed out. In women’s T20s since 2023, pace bowlers took 10 wickets at an average of 20.3 and economy of 7.17. Spinners had more of a say taking 22 wickets at an average of 24.73 and economy of 6.17.
The weather forecast is a concern in Colombo. We expect cloudy conditions with a shower or two in afternoon. There is chances of 90% rain. The game is set to start at 11 AM Local Time and there is hope for all that we get a full game in before those showers begin to fall. Everyone will keep their fingers crossed.
Predicted/Possible Playing XIs of both sides
Here, we will predict the possible playing XIs of both sides.
Pakistan XI: Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha (c), Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman/Khawaja Nafay, Usman Khan (wk), Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Afridi, Salman Mirza, Abrar Ahmed.
Netherlands XI: Michael Levitt, Max O’Dowd, Colin Ackermann, Scott Edwards (c &wk), Bas de Leede, Zach Lion-Cachet, Logan van Beek, Roelof van Der Merwe, Kyle Klein, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash
Saim Ayub: Saim Ayub will be one of the key players to watch out for. Batting at the top of the order, Ayub will hope to give Pakistan a roaring start in powerplay and set things up for others to cash in later on. He not only contributes with bat, but with ball he is a handy off-spinner. He picks wickets at a crucial time and was handy in Asia Cup with the ball. He will be hoping to do well in this clash.
Abrar Ahmed: Abrar Ahmed is a key player for Pakistan and his spin bowling will be crucial for Pakistan in Colombo. With pitch looking to aid spin in Sri Lanka, Abrar will be crucial alongside the other spinners. But he is in good form and will look to do well in the competition. He is miserly and takes wickets as well.
Max O’Dowd: Max O’Dowd is a key player for the Netherlands. Batting at the top of the order, Max will look to give the team a solid start and lay the foundation for others following him. With players like Scott Edwards, Colin Ackermann to follow, Max will be expected to give the team a solid start and lay the foundation in the powerplay. He is experienced and key in these conditions.
Bas de Leede: One of the most important all-rounders in the side, Bas de Leede will be key to Netherlands chances in the match. The all-rounder will be expected to do a job with both and ball and give competition to the other teams. Bas de Leede will want to fire and hope that he can do something special against a strong Pakistan team.

Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match
For starters, let’s hope that the rain stays away and we get a full game in or truncated game whichever possible. If we assume it will be a full game, it is safe to say that Pakistan starts as favourites and should win this contest. But never count Netherlands out as they can upset the opposition. Count them out at your own peril and if Pakistan are not careful, they may find the going tough. The Men in Green though starts as favourites.
Let’s hope for a good game of cricket and hope rain does not spoil the mood in tournament opener fingers crossed.
