IND vs SA: Hosts India Desperate To Get Win Against Confident South Africa

Fresh off a humiliating defeat in Tests, hosts India will aim to bounce back in the white-ball leg of the series when they take on South Africa. First we will have a 3-match ODI series and then that will be followed by a 5-match T20I series. The ODIs out of the three formats may be less important at this stage, but it gives an opportunity for both teams to fine tune their skills in preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup which is two years away from now.

India will be led by KL Rahul in the absence of regular skipper Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer which will also see the two veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back in action as they only play this one format. India haven’t played ODI cricket that much but they went down to Australia 1-2 in Australia in the only series that happened after Champions Trophy 2027. South Africa on the other hand, will be led by Temba Bavuma and they have a mixture of youth and experience to bank upon for the series.

So, the stage is set for what will be an interesting tussle between the two teams in this ODI format of this game.

Overview

The stage is set for the first ODI to take place as India and South Africa face-off at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi. This match takes place on Sunday November 30th with subsequent ODIs taking place in Raipur and Vizag on December 3rd and 6th respectively. This series is not important for automatic qualification  for World Cup 2027 as India are sitting pretty at the top of the standings while South Africa are the host nation and does not matter where they finish in the table.  The Proteas are in the top 6.

India have played just one series post Champions Trophy 2025 which they won in Dubai. India toured Australia for a 3-match ODI series and lost the series after losing the first two games before getting a consolation win in the 3rd ODI in Sydney owing to heroics and partnership from the two veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They will look to do well and start well to give Indian fans something to cheer about with wins against a good South African side.

In the absence of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul will don the captain’s hat and he has his task cut out while picking the playing XI. Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to open the batting with Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill out injured. Virat Kohli will bat at 3, and then there is a possibility of Ruturaj Gaikwad playing in the middle order or they might go with Tilak Verma or Rishabh Pant who is the extra keeper in the side.

The team also has the likes of all-rounders Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Dhruv Jurel is also a part of this squad but is unlikely to get a game. Kuldeep Yadav is a part of this side and then we have got the pacers where Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj has been rested. India has Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna in the side and it will be interesting to see the final playing XI at toss time. The team looks solid but has weaknesses as well and it will be interesting to see how they cope up with South African challenge.

South Africa, on the other hand, will be led by their inspirational captain Temba Bavuma. South Africa are in very good ODI form and has played matches after Champions Trophy 2025 where they lost in the semi-finals to New Zealand. South Africa went to Australia in August and beat them 2-1. Then they went to England and beat them 2-1 as well. Their recent series against Pakistan featured with all due respect a second string side and after winning the series opener, they lost the next two matches to lose the series 1-2. Matthew Breetzke led South Africa in Pakistan while Bavuma led them in Australia and England.

So, both teams come into this series with a loss but South Africa are in better rhythm and frame of mind at this stage than India. The South African team looks solid as well. Led by Temba Bavuma they have the likes of Aiden Markram, Matthew Breetzke in their ranks alongside the veteran who made a comeback in Pakistan in Quinton de Kock and we all know de Kock loves India. They have power hitters like Corbin Bosch and Dewald Brevis as well.

All eyes will also be on Rubin Hermann as he is a talented player as well. Tony de Zorzi is a dangerous batter in white-ball cricket. There is Ryan Rickelton as well. We will keep an eye on Nandre Burger because he can certainly trouble India. Ottneil Baartman is also an interesting player in the mix and will do well if given a chance. Fresh off his Player of the Match performance in Guwahati, Marco Jansen will be raring to go. The spin department has the experienced Keshav Maharaj and Prenelan Subrayen as well alongside Markram who is a handy bowler as well.

The squad looks decent on paper and according to many, it is South Africa who starts as favourites as India are in a lot of chaos at the moment after the Test debacle as India will aim to start with a clean slate in this ODI series.

Head-To-Head

India and South Africa have played against each other in a total of 94 ODIS in which India have won 40 matches and South Africa hold the upper hand with 51 wins. 3 matches have ended in a No Result. In the last 10 matches, it is dead even at 5-5. They last played against each other on 21st December 2023 when India got the better of South Africa by 78 runs.

Pitch & Weather Report

The pitch in Ranchi will be a decent one and it will be of black soil in nature. High scoring encounters are not expected here, as the pitches often offer slow pace and grip. The average first innings total at this venue is just 235 runs. However, it cannot be ruled out that the score might be slightly higher, but expectations of a very large total are low. Teams batting second have found more success here. So far, 9 ODIs matches have been played here and out of which 5 have been won while chasing.

The weather in Ranchi will be decent with temperatures expected to be around 14 degrees Celsius  and maximum is predicted to be 24 degrees Celsius. Clouds are expected to move across the sky throughout the day, and wins will blow at a speed of approximately 9 km/hr. The good news is that there is no threat of rain. Thus, cricket fans will be able to enjoy the match without any interruptions.

Predicted Playing XIS of both sides

Here, we will try and predict the playing XI of both sides.

India XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad. KL Rahul (c & wk), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

South Africa XI: Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock (wk), Temba Bavuma (c), Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Rubin Hermann, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Nandre Burger, Lungi Ngidi.

Key Players to watch out for in this clash

Rohit Sharma: The last ODI India played, Rohit Sharma scored a masterful ton. He would be hoping to carry that form into this ODI series against South Africa. Rohit knows he has to perform or else the exit door is there for him as Gautam Gambhir the head coach is behind the masterplan in kicking him into retirement. Rohit will want to perform in every match and prove his detractors wrong.

Arshdeep Singh: With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj resting due to workload management, Arshdeep Singh will also have a point to prove when he gets the ball. He will first hope to play in the match and then hope he picks wickets and gives India breakthroughs as he will take the new ball one feels and bowl at the death as well. Arshdeep will want to have a good series to make his place in the side permanent.

Quinton de Kock: Quinton de Kock got a sensational hundred in one of the games on his return to the side against Pakistan as he blazed a hundred as 270 was chased down inside 41 overs. De Kock walked away with the Player of the Match Award. Quinton loves India and has a great record against them and he will be hoping he starts off well and gives South Africa a great start and score a big ton as well.

Keshav Maharaj: South Africa’s spin bowling will revolve around Keshav Maharaj as he would like to bring his experience into play especially in the middle overs. Maharaj bowls in the middle overs and that is a crucial phase of the game. Maharaj will want to do well and spin a web around the Indians and if the pitch spins he can run through the Indian line-up. Maharaj will be one of the keys to success for the Proteas.

Key Stats/Records to watch out for in this clash

  • Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to play their 392nd International match in Ranchi overtaking 391 by Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid as the most matches played by an Indian pair.
  • Rohit Sharma needs 98 runs to cross 20,000 international runs and will become the fourth Indian if he gets there.
  • Rohit Sharma with 349 ODI sixes is three sixes away from overtaking Shahid Afridi who has 351 sixes. He needs 8 sixes for 650 international sixes.
  • Rohit Sharma is 27 runs short of 2,000 international runs vs South Africa and 66 runs away from 9,000 international runs, and 133 runs from 5,000 ODI runs in India.
  • Virat Kohli needs one century for getting to six ODI tons vs South Africa and go above Tendulkar and David Warner who have 5 centuries. By getting to 52 ODI tons, Kohli will have the most centuries in a single format moving ahead of Tendulkar’s 51 Test tons.

Predicted Outcome of the Clash

It’s tough to predict a winner at the start of a series especially ODIs where matches are few and far between. Both teams are evenly matched and whoever plays better on the day will win. We reckon that given what’s happened in Tests, and chaos in the Indian team, we will give slight edge to South Africa. But India if they play well and up to their potential can win this game and start the series on the right note. First game always sets the tone.

Let’s see how the ODI game pans out in Ranchi on Super Sunday.
