England’s Tammy Beaumont believes that England is ready for the tough grind vs SL at Colombo
England batter Tammy Beaumont has explained how her side is aiming to overcome the challenge of playing on the tricky Colombo pitch ahead of their clash against Sri Lanka. The track at the R. Premadasa stadium has proved to be a handful for sides, with Australia and India’s strong batting order struggling during their matches against Pakistan.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Tammy Beaumont said that they have had talks about the method and blueprint for the game and looked at some of the dismissals from the previous matches. The English batter noted that the game on Saturday, October 11, would be all about implementing what they have learnt while analysing the track.
“Yeah, we’ve certainly spoken a lot about our method and our blueprint of how we want to go about those things and looked at potentially some of the common themes with the dismissals of the games that have been here and then trying to counteract that. And I guess tomorrow it’s all about putting that into practice and not just talking about it, but actually living it and going out there and doing it. So, yeah, we’ll see if it comes off,” said Tammy Beaumont.
In the two matches that they have played so far, Sri Lanka have lost against India and the game against Australia was washed out. However, Tammy Beaumont said that England are wary of the threat posed by the hosts, given that they know the conditions in Colombo well.
Tammy Beaumont said that the presence of left-handers in the Sri Lankan squad will make things tricky for England and they will have to be disciplined on the spinning track in Colombo.
“Yeah, I think they’re a really well-structured team and certainly a team on the rise. I think they’re really well organized. Obviously they’ve got a lot of left-handers which is not something we’re not used to kind of not having any left-handed batters in our squad I think makes things a little bit trickier.”
“They obviously know their home conditions playing here in Colombo really well and I think their bowling attack is really well disciplined and I think particularly when you’re playing on spinning wickets, if you can be disciplined, it makes life quite difficult for the opposition. So yeah, certainly can’t take Sri Lanka lightly and expecting probably a good game where we’ve got to perform well,” said Tammy Beaumont.
Tammy Beaumont stressed on the importance of patience and precision in batting, especially in tricky conditions. She said these qualities were key to Heather Knight’s successful innings against Bangladesh.
“What we spoke about mainly from Heather’s innings was about how patient she was and how precise she was in the balls she went to score off,” Tammy Beaumont said.
Tammy Beaumont highlighted Linsey Smith, the only left-handed batter in the English squad, as expected to play a crucial role due to her bowling performance and experience. She said several players have batted left-handed for her to help with practice. Tammy Beaumont praised Smith’s performance in the tournament so far and said she would play a crucial role once again in deciding how the game goes on Saturday. England would hope that they keep the winning momentum going on Saturday with a win over SL with their strong squad.
