Hong Kong crashed to another convincing loss this time in the hands of Bangladesh at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. While they improved their performance a way bit from the Afghanistan game and gave a better account of themselves, still it was not good enough to challenge Bangladesh who started their campaign with a win. While there were positives for Hong Kong, we will try and list out areas where they lagged behind and lost the game.
Sluggish Start in powerplay dents Hong Kong
Hong Kong were put into bat first by Bangladesh and got off to a sluggish start in the powerplay. While they managed to lose only 2 wickets, but could only score 34 runs which pegged them back a little bit. It is important to start well and win powerplays and Hong Kong lost the powerplay in both the innings. They scored 34/2 while conceded in the second innings 51/2 to Bangladesh. Bangladesh were 17 runs ahead after the powerplay phase and there was no looking back for them.
Anshuman Rath and Babar Hayat fell in the powerplay but their strike-rate was comparatively low. There is a saying that a good start is half the job done and Hong Kong did not get to the best of starts. Yes, it was an improved batting performance but 143 was never going to be a winning total on that pitch. It was a total that they could fight with. But after the powerplay of both sides, Bangladesh had control of proceedings, and won the contest in the 18th over without breaking much sweat in the chase.
Hong Kong have one game left in the tournament and that will be against Sri Lanka on Monday. If they wish to improve their performance and be competitive, they need to try and get a better start in the powerplay. It won’t be easy against the Sri Lankan bowling attack, but the only way Hong Kong can be competitive is get runs on the board and for doing that get a better powerplay of 45-50 and have wickets in hand to post a total that may challenge Sri Lanka.
Plenty of starts not converted into something substantial restricts Hong Kong’s final total
Another key aspect to notice was that Hong Kong unlike the Afghanistan game got starts at least few of the batters did but they got out at the wrong time. This meant that had one of them crossed 50+ and made a substantial contribution then, the score of Hong Kong may have been over 160 and that may have challenged Bangladesh even more because Bangladesh got to the target in 17.4 overs. So, Hong Kong possibly needed another 20-30 runs out there.
Those 20-30 runs would have happened if the batters who got starts would have converted them into big scores. Zeeshan Ali got 30 but was too slow as he took 34 balls in getting there and got out in the 12th over. Nizakat Khan top scored with 42 off 40 balls but was a tad slow and got out with 7 balls left and couldn’t stay till the end for the finish of the job. Captain Yasim Murtaza was playing a gem of an innings and was batting on 28 off 19 balls when his enterprising innings was cut short due to a run out in the 18th over. This run out turned out to be a difference as Hong Kong left a few runs out there.
This game is a game of fine margins and had one of the three batters mentioned here converted their start to something substantial then the score would have gone to 160 but they had to settle at 143 which was a decent effort but not a match winning score. Hong Kong will look at these areas to work on and come back stronger in their last group stage game against Sri Lanka on Monday. Scores of 50s, 60s always benefits a team and not 20s and 30s which keeps the team in the lurch.
Inability to stop Litton Das-Towhid Hridoy partnership seals the fate for Hong Kong
Hong Kong did well with the ball in the powerplay and prized out the two openers Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan early to reduce Bangladesh to 47/2 inside 6 overs. But then captain Litton Das and young Towhid Hridoy got together and built a solid steady partnership of 95 runs off 70 balls which turned out to be match winning in the end. Hridoy spent time in the middle while Litton was the aggressor after getting his eye in. Both players played the bowlers to the merit of the ball and got their rewards.
Hong Kong seemed to have lost ideas on how to get them out and couldn’t find the incisiveness needed. What the Bangladesh batters did was apart from hitting boundaries they ran lots of ones and twos which was commendable on the heat of Abu Dhabi. But the bowlers especially Ehsan Khan and Yasim Murtaza failed to deliver and were expensive on the night after the new ball bowlers got the wickets. Litton too fell at the end for 59 off 39 balls, but the damage was done as that innings steered Bangladesh past the finishing line.
Going forward, Hong Kong needs to be more incisive in their bowling and look to take wickets at regular intervals to put pressure on the opposition. Taking wickets will be important against Sri Lanka as they boast of a solid batting line-up. Hong Kong must try to be more incisive with the ball post the powerplay as they started decently in the powerplay, but let the match slip thereafter. Lots of positives for them, but still not good enough for a win.
