India’s 2025 Asia Cup Team Is Revealed: Surprises, Plans, and the Shreyas Iyer Exclusion

The much-awaited Asia Cup 2025 roster has been formally revealed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Although the lineup includes a mix of energetic young players and seasoned match winners, one absence has generated a lot of discussion: Shreyas Iyer. The response from former cricket player Robin Uthappa, “Seems strange, hope they have communicated to him…,” reflects the feelings of other fans and experts who were perplexed by the choice.

Squad Overview

Led by the dynamic Suryakumar Yadav, Team India’s 15-member squad is packed with IPL-hardened talent and tactical versatility. Shubman Gill returns to the T20I setup as vice-captain, a move that signals the selectors’ intent to groom future leadership. The squad includes:

  • Batters: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh
  • All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel
  • Wicketkeepers: Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma
  • Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy
  • Standbys: Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal

This squad reflects a clear shift toward aggressive T20 specialists, many of whom have delivered standout performances in IPL 2025.

The Conundrum Of Iyer

Shreyas Iyer’s absence has left commentators and fans perplexed. With over 600 runs and a trip to their first IPL final since 2014, the fashionable middle-order batsman played a crucial role in Punjab Kings’ IPL 2025 campaign. A strong contender for the Asia Cup team, he could anchor innings and accelerate when necessary.

Given that Shreyas Iyer had an amazing IPL season with the Punjab Kings, scoring over 600 runs and leading the team to their first final in more than ten years, his absence has drawn criticism. As a strong contender for the middle-order position, he was able to anchor innings and accelerate when necessary. A more serious question is raised by Uthappa’s remark: was Iyer offered an explanation for his oversight, or was there a breakdown in communication?

In his comments, veteran spinner R. Ashwin questioned why a proven match-winner should be excluded. “What has Shreyas done wrong?” he questioned, citing Iyer’s leadership and steady performances.

Tactical Depth And Youthful Energy

However, the team has full of potential despite the controversies. Fearless stroke play is provided by Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, while depth is added by Rinku Singh’s skill at finishing. Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist spin provides variation in the bowling department, while Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback strengthens the speed attack.

With several all-rounders like Pandya, Dube, and Axar, India has more options when it comes to XI balancing. The selectors seem to be making an investment in a long-term goal, as the competition is a prelude to the 2026 T20 World Cup.

India’s campaign against the United Arab Emirates starts on September 10 and is followed by crucial matches against Pakistan on September 14 and Oman on September 19. Group A’s top two teams will move on to the Super Four round.

The performance of the team will be widely watched as the Men in Blue prepare for continental glory, not only for the outcomes but also for how effectively the different combinations work together. Even though Shreyas Iyer isn’t on the roster, his absence has already come to define the Asia Cup 2025 story.
