Entering the 5th match of this Tri-Series, both sides will be fighting for first place prior to finals action which is four days from now. As New Zealand rattled South Africa by 21 runs last time out, it will be interesting to see if they repeat that performance. Seeing that the Black Caps are currently 2-0, while this Proteas unit is 2-1, this will be the last time these two sides meet each other in group stage action.
With it being the last game prior to the finals for South Africa, they have shown a lot of promise in this series inspite of many major stars missing it. Having the young guns step up has given them an even bigger amount of hope and so has captain Rassie Van der Dussen as he is back in form plus continues showing tremendous veteran leadership.
While many were confused why he was named captain prior to this series, he has proven a ton of doubters wrong and could potentially help the Proteas get full momentum going into these finals. Meanwhile, New Zealand have continued providing that suprise element and factor they are known for during their first two matches.
A group that still has two matches left prior to the finale, they have managed to be as dominant even when both Kane Williamson plus Finn Allen haven’t managed to play a match yet. Getting big news that Glenn Philips is also ruled out of this series, it will be quite interesting to see if Mitchell Santner keeps the same squad or makes a few changes with the top fielding all-rounder no longer being available.
New Zealand: Top-Order Batting Is A Great Strength
When looking at this Black Caps squad, one thing that seems very clear is how strong their top four batsmen are. As Devon Conway remains one of the best left-handed batting openers, he just recently struck a 59-run knock against Zimbabwe last match and is set to do even bigger things.
On the other side of this opening pair, Tim Seifert has struggled to get going but he also is a massive power hitter who could attack any part of the ground. In his last outing against South Africa, the right-handed machine hit four boundaries and was part of the reason his side dominated so much in the powerplay. With them both staying put, their one-down piece named Rachin Ravindra has started showing tons of consistency in the T20I format as well.
Someone who was struggling in the last T20I World Cup to get anything going, he has slowly built his game back up and also hit 30 runs in his latest innings of this series. With him set to play his second match, it will be huge since he is another left-handed piece that can confuse batsmen.
In case New Zealand want to switch up things because they have already qualified for the finals, they made include Tim Robinson in the playing 11 after he saved his side from collapasing against South Africa last match. Lastly, the fourth piece is Daryl Mitchell as he has remained a consistent in this group’s batting lineup for the past two to three years. His innings against Zimbabwe of 26 not-out were part of a match-winning performance and this righty can provide both power hitting plus solid sweep shots.
New Zealand: All-Rounders Will Be Game Changing For This Unit
One massive part of this team that never leaves them out of games is their all-rounder department and how it helps them bat pretty deep. The fastest growing one on this team is Michael Bracewell as he had a wicket in two overs last match, although this piece didn’t bat. Now talking about his batting prowess specifically, this is someone who can come in at 6 or 7 down in T20I’s and hit at an average of 22 runs per match with two half-centuries added to his name in the format.
Michael Bracewell is another left-handed batting option this unit has which could force opposing bowlers to get confused because of the angle they may have to bowl at him. Around where he bats is also where their captain Mitchell Santner comes in and can prove to be a lethal threat.
As someone who has gotten 120 career wickets in the short format, he also has hit a half-century and scores around 16-17 runs per innings. Looking at that number, it’s phenomenal for his batting position down the order and provides a lot of late innings support when New Zealand’s top order may shatter.
On top of that, this group also has newcomer Bevon Jacobs that has a 44-run knock during these last couple matches and can be a bowling part-timer as well. Lastly, this group’s list of all-rounders can’t be completed without the new found star Mark Chapman whose slowly developing himself into one of the scariest pieces that can bat all-around the order. Even though he is also another part-time bowler, this rising star has already delivered 9 half-centuries and a 100+ score once in this format with many more to come.
South Africa: Batting Unit Has Found A Real Groove
Despite this group having two openers that continue struggling in Reeza Hendricks and Lhaun-Dre Pretorious, if they can provide better starts up-top this batting group is nearly unbeatable. As both combined for 10 runs last match, one real player that can take games away from opponents with his batting is Rassie van Der Dussen.
As the current captain hit another half-century last match, Rassie van der Dussen provided wonderful stroke play and hopes to continue playing another controlled innings. Now up to 1331 runs in this format, a new piece has slowly started making his name in Rubin Hermann. Having provided South Africa with two 40+ knocks in his last three outings, he has been a major piece whenever his side requires to chase down scores.
With him usually being an agressor for this unit, another one in the middle order is Dewald Brevis. Hitting at a strike rate of over 190, he has already plummeted several balls for sixes and keeps hitting runs in a very quick succession. Someone who has produced 89 runs during his previous three innings, he is going to continue being a great marksman during the middle of his innings. As he will continue doing his job wonderfully.
George Linde is also going to be another massive piece that comes towards the middle of this batting unit since he knows how to play both great drives and can also big with maximums. Adding the potential Corbin Bosch plus Senuran Muthuswamy bring to this group, South Africa will once again have a very loaded batting group.
South Africa: Pacers Will Make A Difference
Since this unit only has one primary spinner in Senuran Muthuswamy, their pace attack will once again be very scary. Lungi Ngidi remains super consistent as the lead bowler and is only a couple of wickets away from taking over Kagiso Rabada for 2nd most T20I wickets on South Africa. His accuracy remains a key factor, while this group could potentially have both Kwena Maphaka, 5 wickets in 6 matches, plus Nandre Burger coming in from the other end as left-handed pieces.
As Burger was 1/20 in his four overs last match, Rassie van Der Dussen has really given him confidence by letting him bowl the full quota almost every match now. Seeing that Corbin Bosch once again will get all this overs done, he had a 4.0 economy and picked up two massive wickets in his last match. To round out this unit, George Linde is a part-time spinner that can be key in spells with Senuran Muthuswamy because they both are left-handed pieces that can become wickets at ease.
