ENG vs IND : Sanjay Manjrekar Lavishes Praise On Jasprit Bumrah’s 5 Wicket Haul

Jasprit Bumrah is happy that his name is now on the Lord’s honours board and it’s a story he will someday narrate to his son Angad when he’s all grown up. Jasprit Bumrah weaved his magic at the historic venue on the second morning with a three-wicket burst that saw him get rid of Harry Brook, Joe Root and Ben Stokes en route to a memorable five-wicket haul during the third Test between India and England.

For Jasprit Bumrah, the most memorable Test in England happens to be the one where he excelled with the bat in the company of fellow India pacer Mohammed Shami which helped them engineer a stunning turnaround and eke out a memorable win at Lord’s. Jasprit Bumrah was referring to the Lord’s Test of 2021 when India crushed England by 151 runs. Set a target of 272 to win, hosts were bundled out for 120.

That England were left to chase a stiff total was largely thanks to a brilliant 89-run partnership for the 10th wicket between Jasprit Bumrah and Shami. Before the start of Lord’s Test, there was plenty of chatter around how the slope at the ground can become a challenge. Jasprit Bumrah said not thinking about the slope last time he played here proved deterimental.

Jasprit Bumrah breaks legendary Kapil Dev’s record enroute his 5 wickets haul at Lord’s

India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah chose not to celebrate his five-wicket haul against England on Day 2 at Lord’s, despite the feat earning him a place on the prestigious Honours Board and surpassing a long-standing record held by Kapil Dev.

Having missed the second Test at Edgbaston due to workload management, Jasprit Bumrah returned in style for the third Test. He claimed his 15th five-wicket haul by dismissing Jofra Archer in the second session on Friday with a brilliant delivery that nipped back in from a good length, sneaking past Archer’s hesitant defence to knock over the stumps.

This was the fourth wicket Bumrah took in the morning and he ended up with a sensational spell. His genius made India dismiss England on 387, after the home team started the morning at 251-4. That would have been a lot less were it not for the key half-centuries of Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse to provide some resistance.

However, the initial hours of the day belonged to none other than Jasprit Bumrah who smashed a record that Kapil Dev held since 1980, of the most five-wicket hauls in overseas Tests by an Indian player. Out of them, 13 have come overseas and are now more than Kapil did (12). It was also his second five wicket in a match in this series after getting one during the first Test at Headingley. Former Indian batter now commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has lauded this heroic performance from Indian spearhead and has expressed his feelings for the same.

Sanjay Manjrekar applauds Jasprit Bumrah for his yet another 5-fer vs England at Lord’s

Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets for one run in seven balls, including the crucial dismissals of England captain Ben Stokes and centurion Joe Root in the first session. Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s top-ranked Test bowler, made an immediate impact after being rested from India’s emphatic victory in the second Test at Edgbaston last week, which levelled the five-match series at 1-1.

England were reduced to 271/7 on the second morning, having resumed at 251/4. Ben Stokes, the current England captain, added just five runs to his overnight score before being bowled for 44 by a Bumrah delivery that jagged back and hit his off stump, leaving England at 260/5.

Jasprit Bumrah struck again when Root, on 104, was late on a drive and inside-edged onto his middle stump. The next ball saw all-rounder Chris Woakes fall for a golden duck, edging a wide delivery from Bumrah to reserve wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, who was standing in for Rishabh Pant, who had injured his finger on Thursday. An Indian review confirmed the dismissal.

Although Brydon Carse survived the hat-trick ball, England were still struggling at 271-7. Their position could have been worse if KL Rahul had not dropped a relatively straightforward slip catch when Jamie Smith was on just five, with Mohammed Siraj being the unlucky bowler. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Jofra Archer after lunch on day two, having already dimissed Harry Brook on the first day, to complete his five-wicket haul. Sanjay Manjrekar reflected on Bumrah’s disciplined spell on an unhelpful surface, saying on JioHotstar’s ‘Match Centre Live’:

“This is what Bumrah is all about. It was a humbler Bumrah today, he accepted the conditions, knew there wasn’t much in the pitch, and just kept coming in and bowling. He shelved the ego and focused on perseverance, there were no magic deliveries, just consistent line and length.

“These wickets came through sheer hard work. India bowled really well to keep England under control, and on a pitch like this, that’s a good outcome. But we don’t yet know how this pitch will behave in the second innings. I’m curious to see how someone like Jofra Archer goes on it — that’ll give us a clearer picture of the surface.”

Commenting on whether the ball change disrupted India’s rhythm, Manjrekar said:

“Possibly. I was watching Shubman closely, and you could see it got to him. Emotions were running high. India had been on the field for a long time, had just got Joe Root out, and really wanted to press on. This was a genuinely frustrated young man, which is understandable. Whether India lost a bit of control in that phase – the ball change could have been a contributing factor.”

However, even after achieving the landmark and influencing the game the manner he did, Bumrah seemed not to be celebrating his big moment. He was a bit shy even when lifting his hand with the ball, a symbolic way of celebrating a five-wicket haul, as have been done by the great Glenn McGrath.

Mohammed Siraj, his pace partner noticed that Bumrah was not keen on celebrating the moment, so much so that he lifted his hand and gave him a friendly salute after which the audience cheered the No. 1 ranked bowler in the world. Jasprit Bumrah finished the second day with figures of 5/74 as India bowled out England for 387 all out.

The pair of KL Rahul(53*) and Rishabh Pant(19*) have built an unbeaten 37-run stand to infuse confidence into the side, as they are 145/3 in pursuit of 387 and a lot would depend on them when Day 3 resumes for India.
