Jayden Seales‘ 5-wicket haul and Shamar Joseph’s 4-wicket haul helped the Caribbeans restrict the Aussies to 180 in the first innings. Australian bowlers replied by removing 4 wickets for 57 runs on day 1.
Lowest first innings total
Australia was bowled out for 180 runs. This is their lowest first innings against the West Indies in test matches. The previous lowest was 216 in 1995. This is the first time they have been restricted below 200 in the first innings against the West Indies.
These two teams have been playing against each other in test matches since 1930, and have played in 120 test matches so far. This is only the 12th instance that Australia have been bowled out below 200.
33 years wait
The last time the West Indies won a test series against Australia was back in 1992. They have bowled out the Aussies for a small score in the first innings. If the batters showed some grit on day 2 and helped them take the lead and achieve a decent total, the bowlers can fire back and win this match.
Winning the first match would give the West Indians a bright chance of winning the series and ending the 33-year drought.
Shamar Joseph- the new sensation
Shamar Joseph has become a new fast bowling sensation for the West Indies, especially in test matches. His excellent spell against Australia at the Gabba last year, which helped West Indies to win a test match at the venue after 36 years and draw a test series against them after 26 years.
Joseph’s spell of 7/68 in the second innings while defending 216 was the game changer of the match. West Indies won that match by 8 runs. He was all the way for another fifer today, missed it because of few drop catches.
He picked 4/46, and he was the reason for the top order collapse, which allowed Jayden Seales to ran through the middle order and tailenders to pick his third fifer in tests.
Jayden Seales’ 5 wicket haul
Jayden Seales is another raw talent for the West Indies, who missed the last Australian tour due to an Injury claimed his first fifer against them. His third fifer overall in red ball cricket, and all of them came in home conditions.
Looking at Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph’s raw pace and performance, with a good support from another Joseph ( Alzarri Joseph ) from the other end, West Indies seems to be regaining their fast bowling legacy after years.
