Jasprit Bumrah has undoubtedly been the best bowler from both teams during the ongoing India vs England 1st Test match. Despite taking a fifer in the first innings, however, Jasprit Bumrah has been let down by his fellow teammates who dropped 3 catches that could have piled up his wickets tally even further.
With the fifer on Sunday, Jasprit Bumrah also went past Pakistani great Wasim Akram who held the record for most wickets by an Asian pacer in the SENA coutnries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia). While Jasprit Bumrah was the sole wicket taker for India during Day 2 of the match, he got some quality support on Day 3 as Prasidh Krishna made a comeback to take three wickets while Mohammed Siraj also clinched 2 scalps.
Jasprit Bumrah – The lone warrior for Team India
Jasprit Bumrah once again showed why he’s the world’s premier fast bowler, delivering a sensational five-wicket haul to dismantle England’s first innings despite being let down repeatedly by his teammates on the field. Jasprit Bumrah finished with figures of 5/83, a performance dripping with quality and control, in sharp contrast to the rest of India’s pace attack. England eventually folded for 465, falling just six short of India’s total of 471, but the narrow lead was only possible because of one man.
Jasprit Bumrah was a lone warrior on Day 2, claiming all three wickets that fell as England slowly built their innings. On Day 3, he finally received some support — Prasidh Krishna picked up three wickets while Mohammed Siraj added two. However, both bowlers were inconsistent, leaking runs and allowing England to stay within striking distance of India’s formidable first-innings total.
The numbers alone, 5/83 in 24.4 overs, don’t capture the full weight of Bumrah’s performance. He was, by far, the best bowler on either side in this Test, both in skill and impact. On a pitch that offered little help, it was Bumrah who held the line. He removed Zak Crawley early, dismissed the dangerous Joe Root, returned late to clean up Josh Tongue, and did all this while battling both the conditions and his own teammates’ lapses.
During the Leeds Test, Jasprit Bumrah surpassed Wasim Akram to become the highest wicket-taker among Asian bowlers in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), taking his tally to 150-four more than the legendary Pakistani pacer.

Sachin Tendulkar slams Indian fielders for letting down Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah’s searing spell of fast bowling earned him a well-deserved five-wicket haul in the first innings at Headingley, and with it, the praise of none other than Sachin Tendulkar himself. The Indian legend took to social media shortly after Jasprit Bumrah wrapped up England’s innings to point towards just how phenomenal the pacer had been, despite a series of frustrating setbacks.
On Day 3 of the Test on Sunday, Bumrah achieved the feat as he bagged five wickets. He returned with figures of 5/83 from 24.4 overs during England’s batting innings. While Bumrah picked five wickets, it was a tough outing as four other opportunities for wickets were missed off his bowling, with three dropped catches and a no-ball.
Sachin Tendulkar, reacting to Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul, congratulated him but also mentioned that the no-ball and three dropped chances kept him away from nine wickets.
“Congratulations Bumrah! A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and 𝙣𝙖𝙪 (nine) wickets. 🤪,” Sachin tweeted.
As Jasprit Bumrah looked up to the heavens in quiet relief, his teammates swarmed him in celebration. This was Jasprit Bumrah’s 12th five-wicket haul in away Tests, which took him level with the great Kapil Dev. India will now be hoping to put another solid batting performance to put England under pressure in the run-chase. Jasprit Bumrah’s spell helped India take a six-run lead in the first innings. They went to Stumps on Day 3 ahead by 96 runs and down by two wickets setting up an exciting Day 4 of the test match.
