In a move that took the cricketing world by surprise, South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 33-year-old Heinrich Klaasen made the declaration through social media on June 2, stating a desire to prioritise spending time with his family after being one of the best white-ball batters for his country.
Heinrich Klaasen’s decision comes just months after representing South Africa in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where the Proteas bowed out in the semi-finals against New Zealand. Heinrich Klaasen’s iconic whip-pull off the spinners made him a dangerous prospect across the formats for South Africa. He was a member of the South Africa side that featured in the recent ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, and the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.
Heinrich Klaasen’s stellar International career
Known for his explosive power and middle-order stability, Heinrich Klaasen leaves behind an impressive white-ball legacy, having scored 2,141 runs in ODIs, 1,000 in T20Is, and 104 in Tests — including four international centuries. He scored 2141 runs with a highest score of 174 in his 60 ODIs at an average of 43.69. In the T20Is, he scored 1000 runs with a highest score of 81 and a strike rate of 141.84.
Heinrich Klaasen, 33, made his international debut in 2018 and went to play in 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is for South Africa, amassing 2141 and 1000 runs respectively across formats. While he smashed four centuries and 11 fifties in ODIs, Klaasen had five T20I half-centuries against his name.
Heinrich Klaasen had already bid farewell to the longest format back in 2024, but his sudden exit from the ODI and T20I circuits marks the end of an era for South Africa’s power-hitting blueprint. He holds the world record for the highest individual ODI score by a No. 5 batter — an unbeaten 174 off 83 balls against Australia in September 2023, a knock that underscored his ability to single-handedly turn games.
Debuting against India in 2018, Heinrich Klaasen quickly earned plaudits for his composure against spin and consistency under pressure. Over time, he grew into a key figure not just for South Africa but in various T20 leagues globally. Most recently, he turned out for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025, contributing with the bat even as the team fell short of a playoff spot after finishing sixth on the points table.
Heinrich Klaasen was part Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2025. He was retained for a huge sum of Rs 23 before the mega-auction. The right-handed batsman finished the tournament as SRH’s highest run-scorer and piled up 487 runs at an average of 44.27. However, Heinrich Klaasen signed of IPL 2025 with a unbeaten 105 off 39 – his second-ever IPL century, during SRH’s last match of the season against arch rivals Kolkata Knight Riders.
Batting with a strike rate of 172.69, Heinrich Klaasen smashed 25 sixes and 42 boundaries. His tally of 487 runs includes one century and a half-century. It remains to be seen if SRH decide to keep his services for the next season. They can re-sign him in the mini-auction if the management decides to release him.
Heinrich Klaasen retired from white ball cricket at 33
The swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter, who made his debut in 2018, took to social media to announce his retirement. In his statement, Heinrich Klaasen mentioned how difficult it was for him to arrive at this decision.
“It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with,” Klaasen said.
“From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country and it was everything that I have worked for and dreamed about as a young boy,” he added.
Heinrich Klaasen, who featured in 122 internationals for the Proteas, felt gratitude towards his coaches during his cricketing journey.
“I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life. Playing for the Proteas gave me the opportunity to meet great people that changed my life, and to those people I can’t say thank you enough,”
“My road to wearing the Proteas shirt was different than most and there were certain coaches in my career that kept believing in me – to them I will always be grateful,”
“To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career.” he concluded
Heinrich Klaasen was Sunrisers Hyderabad’s most expensive retention in IPL 2025 and would likely continue to feature in T20 leagues around the world. Heinrich Klaasen’s decision only adds to the list of the shocks in the cricket fraternity, as it follows Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell’s sudden retrirement from ODI cicket earlier on the same day.
