RCB vs PBKS: “Glenn Maxwell Has Been A Little Bit Casual”- Cheteshwar Pujara’s Stern Words For All-Rounder

Glenn Maxwell was persisted with for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), however, the right-hander failed to repay the faith as his flop show continued in New Chandigarh. Glenn Maxwell, 36, had the chance to take Punjab Kings out of troubled waters and help the hosts post a respectable total on the board.

Glenn Maxwell fell prey to Varun Chakravarthy and departed back to the hut after scoring 7 runs off 10 balls. He was dismissed on the first ball of the ninth over of Punjab Kings’ innings. In the entire IPL 2025 season, Glenn Maxwell has so far scored 41 runs in 6 matches. The PBKS batter failed to read the googly bowled by Varun Chakravarthy. Glenn Maxwell was on the back foot as he looked to force the ball through the off-side, but the ball spun sharply to hit the top of the middle and off stump.

Glenn Maxwell’s poor IPL records since IPL 2024 and IPL 2025

Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, RCB’s two big Australian recruits, have been a major disappointment in this IPL. Green was dropped from the XI after RCB’s match against RR on April 6 while Glenn Maxwell sat out from the run-fest against SRH on Monday. In six matches this year, Maxwell has scored just 32 runs at an average of 5.33 and a strike rate of 94. 28 of his 32 runs came in the match against KKR. He has registered three ducks in the tournament.

The 35-year-old has been in woeful form in IPL 2024, scoring 32 runs at an average of 5.33 with three ducks in six outings. Maxwell’s lack of runs has been surprising, considering his incredible form in white-ball cricket since the last IPL season. He scored 400 runs for RCB in 2023 at an average of over 33 and a strike rate of 183.49 and continued that form into the ODI World Cup later in the year to help Australia win their sixth title

Maxwell’s performance in IPL 2024 was woeful, managing just 52 runs in nine matches at an average of 5.77. He picked up six wickets in as many bowling innings, at an economy of eight. Glenn Maxwell, who was picked for Rs 4.2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction by the Punjab Kings, has scored 41 runs in five matches at a miserable average of 8.2.

Glenn Maxwell has been the biggest flop in the history of the Indian Premier League. Despite his ordinary performances over the years, Ricky Ponting forced the Punjab Kings owners to invest INR 4.20 crore in the Australian all-rounder’s services. Ponting has seen Maxwell failing in the cash-rich league, but the Australian connection was preferred over the best interest of the franchise.

In 6 matches in the 18th season, he has amassed 41 runs at an average of 10.25 and a strike rate of 105.12. The right-handed batter has recorded scores of 0, 30, 1, 3 and 7. His name is Big Show due to his hitting abilities, but the IPL is still waiting to see his attacking brand of cricket consistently.

He has picked up just four wickets in six games, although his economy has been impressive, at 8.46. Former Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara  brutally roasted Maxwell for his poor showing against the defending champions KKR.

Cheteshwar Pujara launches attack on Glenn Maxwell

Cheteshwar Pujara has warned Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) all-rounder Glenn Maxwell that he must wake up before the team is forced to drop him from the playing XI. The Indian batter also observed that the Aussie all-rounder has been slightly casual at times and must pull up his socks ahead of the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.

Maxwell, who was bought for ₹4.20 crore in the auction, has managed only 41 runs in five innings at a woeful 8.20. He was out for a first-ball duck in the season opener. The Victorian has been more than handy with the ball. Hence, it remains to be seen how much the management persists with the veteran based on his returns only as a bowler.

The Saurashtra batter said Maxwell must realise that the team is dependent upon him for runs so they could win the season; hence, he must show the hunger. He said on ESPN Cricinfo’s Time Out:

“He hasn’t changed the way he has approached the IPL. There have been times where he’s been a little casual. He’s the same what he was maybe eight-ten years ago. I’m a little critical, but there are times where as a player you need to wake up. You need to realise you’re getting an opportunity to play and be part of a franchise where things are at stake. And there are times a player can get casual, they’re not worried about what’s happening.”

“I’m sure he wants to perform but when you’re not performing there’s a fine line of being causal and just trying to pull up your socks and trying to perform.”

The 35-year-old’s performance in IPL was equally woeful last year, managing only 52 runs in 10 matches. With the ball, he has picked up four scalps in six matches at 27.50. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal, in the company of Maxwell, will have noticed the Royal Challengers Bengaluru batters’ struggle against slow bowlers R Sai Kishore (2/22, Gujarat Titans), Kuldeep Yadav (2/17) and Vipraj Nigam (2/18, both Delhi Capitals) in Bengaluru, once the field was spread out.

Both Chahal and Maxwell will be armed with their familiarity with the conditions in Bengaluru as well, courtesy of the years spent at the Royal Challengers’ dugout. It promises to be a terrific clash between RCB & PBKS on 18th April at Bengaluru as the surface has been quite mysterious.

But Chahal, who returned to form with a four-fer against the Kolkata Knight Riders and Maxwell, assuming that his dull form with the bat will not hinder his inclusion in the XI on Friday, operates aside from the conditions.
