MS Dhoni is still dangerous in IPL — that’s the message from PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting, who has backed the legendary Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper amid rising criticism over his form and age. While many fans and cricket experts have recently questioned whether MS Dhoni should retire, Ponting believes the veteran wicketkeeper is still a vital asset to his team.
CSK looks in all sorts of trouble with their top order not performing according to its credentials. The way CSK’s batting lineup fell like a pack of cards against RCB & DC raises questions over the team’s dynamics. The decision to make Shivam Dube as the impact player sub every other match is also not showing results.
CSK are one of the most successful teams in IPL history- Ricky Ponting
Speaking to The Indian Express during an Idea Exchange session, Ricky Ponting praised Dhoni’s consistent wicketkeeping skills and smart usage in the Impact Player role.
“Well, his keeping is not getting any worse, that’s one thing I do know; he’s not missing many standing up to the stumps against the spinners, as good as ever. Look, you are not going to argue with anything CSK do, they are one of the most successful teams in IPL history,” Ricky Ponting said.
MS Dhoni Still Dangerous in IPL: Ricky Ponting Defends Icon Amid Criticism
Despite playing a reduced batting role over the last couple of IPL seasons, Dhoni’s impact remains significant. Ponting emphasized how CSK’s structured and consistent coaching has helped the team stay competitive, even as Dhoni steps in during the final overs to play the finisher’s role.
“They have had consistent coaching for a long time and generally make the right decisions. With the impact player rule now, Dhoni bats after other serious ball strikers within their right,” Ponting added.
As Dhoni continues to come in during the final moments of the innings, his explosive style still poses a threat. Ponting believes that whether Dhoni retires or not will depend on his performance this season.
“I guess he has played a diminished role in the last couple of years, just coming in for the last 10-12 balls and trying to make a big impact. Dhoni is still dangerous in the IPL,” he said.
CSK’s Next Big Test Against Punjab Kings
Chennai Super Kings are set to face Punjab Kings in Mullanpur today, April 8. With questions about Dhoni’s future looming large, the match presents an opportunity for the team to bounce back and make a statement. Head coach Stephen Fleming has also supported Dhoni, saying he is “still going strong” and there is no plan to force his retirement.
Ponting concluded that if Dhoni finds rhythm with the bat, he may continue beyond this season. But if the struggles persist, a decision might be made. PBKS have a chance to deepen the agony of CSK, who are placed at 9th position in the points table with 1 win from 4 matches.
