Heading into the 2nd day of this test match between Zimbabwe and New Zealand, it became way more competitive today as both sides looked pretty evenly matched. Although the Black Caps couldn’t find could batting touch at their start, the unit managed to extend their lead to 158 runs before bowling. Dary Mitchell was in superb form against Zimbabwe.
It remains quite impressive how this team always manages to get out of jams and give their side a good result later on in each match. As the Black Caps were without Kane Williamson, Tim Seifert, and their former captain in Tim Southee has retired, many other pieces like Devon Conway plus Daryl Mitchell have shown up. With Mitchell Santner being their captain for this match, New Zealand will always have a winning chance no matter the situation under his captaincy.
As this group looks to continue building their test team once again to match 2021 form, their opponents in Zimbabwe also had a much better day two. After looking like they were going to get run out of the stadium on the first day, their team got out of a massive deficit and seems like their confidence has improved.
Since this summer was their first chance in years to play against the bigger cricketing nations in test matches, it’s clear that they have been slowly getting better as a team, plus learning from their mistakes. Being very evident on the 2nd day, many seniors on this side were a huge part of that, including captain Sikandar Raza, who started seeming very tactically sound and getting input from others like Craig Ervine. With it being more exciting about what they will showcase on their third day, it’s first important to go over the important aspects of today’s play.
Morning Session: Both Teams Had Their Positives and Negatives In This Period
Starting at 92/0 at the beginning of Day 2, New Zealand were looking to build on this amazing score and take control of this match. With Devon Conway having scored 36 runs in that period, he helped the Black Caps score to go up towards 174/3. Being at an amazing score of 87 now, it was clear that his form in test matches was back after nearly three years, and he was attacking with a boundary-hitting intent.
Ending with more than 10 fours combined in his innings, Conway was on the charge despite his opening partner named Will Young, losing his wicket much earlier in the session. As Young did provide 41 runs, all of them came yesterday, with him getting out near the beginning of today’s play.
This group’s one-down batsmen in Henry Nicholls really stood out during this period, as he went for 34 runs and seemed like he was finding the boundaries pretty easily. Hammering away six fours, he created a solid 56-run partnership with Conway in the middle and helped this side get past 150.
Although Rachin Ravindra unfortunately got out right after him, Tom Blundell and Devon Conway started off strong together by scoring in quick succession. For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani finally struck with two wickets, and his whip-like action helped the balls go at paces up to 150 in these innings. Forcing both Will Young and Henry Nicholls to pop the ball up, senior spinner Sikandar Raza fooled a lefty in Ravindra by changing his angles and got a massive piece out of there pretty early, while bowling at about a 3.10 economy.
Afternoon Session: Zimbabwe’s Bowling Attack Slowly Fought Back Into Match
A major story of this second session today was about how the Chevrons’ spinners plus pacers helped their unit make this game much tighter. Seeing that New Zealand was only down three wickets after the morning, Zimbabwe picked up four more and allowed 80 runs to keep their opponents in check at 254/7.
This period started off with a bang as Tanaka Chivanga bowled a full-length ball, which caused Devon Conway to sky it and make his innings done at 88 for 170. With Daryl Mitchell coming in for him at that time, his batsmen on the other side, named Tom Blundell, also got out to a very similar delivery by Chivanga. Seeing that Zimbabwe’s pacer started with a massive spell, he was also able to drop his economy from above 4 to near 2.5.
As Blessing Muzarabani was yet again a factor in this period, he picked up another wicket by hitting the same line and length, which caused Michael Bracewell to edge it right to the wicket-keeper. Putting him at three now, he seemed like he could have gotten two or three more people out and bowled another maiden over to drop his economy below 2.80. With Vincent Masekesa getting into action as well after catching a shot hit by Mitchell Santner directly to him, this innings ended with a very important 21-run partnership for New Zealand. As the previously mentioned Daryl Mitchell hit over 30 runs in this session, Nathan Smith also provided batting prowess before it was time for tea.
Evening Session: New Zealand Ends The Day On A Very Strong Note
When this innings had started, it first seemed like the Black Caps would be bowled under 300, given the current situation they were in. As Daryl was kind of struggling to get off the mark during the end of their second session, the third one was enormous for him as he helped this New Zealand rack up runs. Finishing with 80 runs, he created a wonderful 50+ run partnership alongside Nathan Smith, who had to leave early due to injury. Mitchell was on point with his shot-making decisions today as he hit 5 fours and also smashed a massive six, while the right-handed piece’s stroke play was something wonderful to witness once again throughout these innings.
His knock really helped them get up towards 307 runs, with Nathan Smith not having a chance to come out once again because his injury was that bad. Although Matt Henry had hit a boundary near the end of the innings for this back-order, Sean Williams created a surprise as a lefty and clean-bowled the New Zealand batsmen, while Newman Nyamhuri finally got his big wicket of Daryl Mitchell after being close to so many chances.
With both of them having economies under four, the whole Zimbabwe bowling attack ended like that, and it became their turn to bat. As Ben Curran and Brian Bennett had a strong opening standing of 25 runs, it ended with a straight delivery from Matt Henry that landed right into Will O’Rourke’s hands. They also lost another wicket before the end of the day as Will O’Rourke got a handy wicket similar to how Matt Henry got his, and took out dangerous Brian Bennett for 18 after hitting four boundaries.
