When Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was batting at number 84, tried to hook a bouncer from Pat Cummins, wicketkeeper Alex Carey caught the ball. The Australians appealed, and on-field umpire Joel Wilson declared the ball not out. Australia then looked into the ruling. Even though Real-time Snicko did not confirm the edge, the third umpire reversed an on-field not-out decision for caught-behind.
This led to the extraordinary dismissal of India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal during the last session on day five of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. India was aiming for a draw after their top order failed to pile on the much-needed runs. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli three stalwarts of Indian batting were out cheaply.
After a poor display of catching on the field, Yashasvi Jaiswal looked confident with the bat. Regular replays revealed a slight deflection, however Snicko had a flat line as the ball passed the bat. Based on his observations of the deviation, third umpire Sharfuddoula reversed the ruling in favour of Australia. Before leaving, Jaiswal was observed conversing with the umpires. India’s last chance to save the Test was lost when he was dismissed.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Victim Of Shambolic Umpiring Down Under
Yashasvi Jaiswal was given out in a bizarre situation. Things like this keep happening every time Team India visits down under. Right from earluy 2000’s to till date. Its ridiculous that how many times India end up in the wrong side of the decision.
There are two questions here, Although it looked from one angle that he hit it, there have been many instances in international cricket where batsmen have been given not out based on snicko even when it look out to the naked eye. Second and a much bigger question, how can you overturn an on field call of not out without any strong evidence of snicko.
The other main question is where was the benefit of doubt gone? The benefit of doubt always favours the batsman. When snicko did not show anything it had go in the favour of the batsman.
High time for ICC to have some clear written rules in case of such scenarios because these things keep happening again and again. What is the point of using technology if you are nit going to rely on it?
Australia have taken the lead in the BGT by 2-1. Now both teams will fly to Sydney for the final test. A draw would be enough for Australia to win the bragging rights of BGT. India will really have to go back to the drawing board and assess themselves. Batters will have to apply themselves more in order to beat Australia at Sydney in the new year’s test.
