WI vs SL: Can West Indies Find Great Motivation & Consistency

As the recent IPL season has officially wrapped up and we head into the major international period of this calendar year, two sides that were once legendary are trying to restore their names. With these units being the West Indies and Sri Lanka, it is their first time playing in a 50-over series against each other since the end of 2024. During that time, the host nation in Sri Lanka came out victorious 2-1, while the Windies are hoping to return the favor and be full of confidence heading into the ODI WC, which is about 18 months from now.

Looking at this first match, Kusal Mendis will be leading the Lankan side, and hoping that they can win their first series in this format since August of 2025 against Zimbabwe. With Sri Lanka trying to figure out who is worth the hype in their squad and moving pieces around, this will be a great series to show what they can improve on after playing an evenly matched side.

Meanwhile, West Indies are coming in with very similar expectations, while needing to develop the proper players in order to make sure they don’t embarrass themselves like 2023, where they missed out on it completely. Knowing that Nicholas Pooran and Kyle Mayers won’t be there like previous times, the top-order batting is one place of improvement, while they’re constantly trying to rebuild their fast bowling.

West Indies Batting Will Be In Top-Form If They Can Stay Consistent

One thing that is very important about the West Indies in this match is that their proper batters face several deliveries earlier on, which would help their down-the-order batters finish innings with very high strike rates. Opening on one side will definitely be Ackeem Auguste, as this left-handed rising star has shown great potential in first-class cricket with 8 fifties and is finally hoping to translate that to the second-longest format.

Despite already playing four ODI’s against New Zealand late last year, that wasn’t his best performance as he only compiled 56 runs, but he is hoping to completely change his fortunes now. On the other side, John Campbell, 282 runs in 9 matches, is going to be another key lefty, whose game is very composed, while he’s hoping to reach his 179-run knock levels once again.

At one-down, Keacy Carty absolutely lit it up for the West Indies last year with his ability to create all different types of shots and keep on compiling 100’s. Having made it to 5 centuries, including 3 in the month of May 2025, this is a dangerous piece who can produce runs at an average near 40. Their most complete batsman in Shai Hope, 6,100+ runs, will once again be clinical and put on a masterclass no matter how other teammates are playing, while building up for a newly improved Shimron Hetmyer.

After tearing up the T20 format, Hetmyer might replace Carty at one-down or stay at number 5 in order to create a more powerful style. With Sherfane Rutherford also being another another very dangerous lefty who’s already scored over 50 eight times in 22 matches, Roston Chase and Romario Shepard will do an amazing job of closing out this batting order.

West Indies Pacers Are Something To Fear As They Found Form Again

For this Windies fast-bowling unit, it is really important to mention that they are the true strength of this unit and something they can rely on to build up. Looking at their top option in Jayden Seals, his strength that creates amazing speed on the ball, and having the ability to provide bounce in home conditions, is really going to make a factor that most Sri Lankan batsmen don’t want to face.

Creating a very scary combination with him is Alzarri Joseph, whose finally making a return after missing out on the T20 WC and has been in great form recently. With Joseph being another piece that relies heavily on pace, his ability to swing the ball has gotten him to 133 wickets in 81 matches, and also kept his economy under 5.5.

Knowing that Justin Greaves is also going to bowl since he’s a pure all-rounder that the West Indies always trust, his economy may stay pretty high in this match, but this is a right-handed piece that has the notion to take wickets during crunch time. For their major third pacer, the question is going to come down between Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde, since Romario Shepard no longer will be bowling long overs for West Indies after proving to be a liability in that department.

For spinners, Roston Chase has continued being one of the best in the world for the turn he creates on the ball with his length, while Shamar Springer, 2 wickets in 3 matches, is starting to make his name known.

Sri Lanka Top-Order Should Be A Major Reason They Can Succeed

On Sri Lanka’s side of things, it is very interesting to see all the different things their top pieces can do and the scores they put up, which tend to get faded by the back-end at times. Opener Pathum Nissanka, 2,920 ODI runs and 7 hundreds, has turned into an absolute beast over the last several series and become this team’s best current piece by far. Having been in amazing form no matter what tournament or league he is playing in, there is no doubt he will show up again, while a very underrated name in Avishka Fernando will be across him. Seeing that Fernando has eclipsed 1,500 runs, he isn’t really talked about because his game seems to be less flashy, but the traditional batting style really works.

At one-down, Kusal Mendis is the most veteran player on this side and closing in on 5,000 runs, while providing an amazing ability to always stay consistent. Someone who can really create special partnerships with Nissanka, this group’s two-down batsmen in Sadeera Samarawickrama, 8 fiftees, has been an important player in his own right.

At three-down, former captain Charith Asalanka will still be batting in that commanding style, while also hoping to bring up the power game for this unit. Down the order, Kamindu Mendis will mostly be relied upon as a true switch-hitter, while Sri Lanka are hoping that their bowlers can finally add some runs as well, like Wanindu Hasaranga.

The Complete Bowling Attack Of Sri Lanka Should Guide Them To Fooling Opposing Orders

One very positive thing about the Sri Lankan side is that their bowling features so many different options of many styles. As Wanindu Hasaranga is their top option in any format, he has remained as a top spinner around the world due to his orthodox style and the ability to deliver into the pitch, which gives the ball a tougher elevation for batters.

Knowing that Hasaranga, 112 wickets in 69 matches, is going to continue being important for all 10 overs, Maheesh Theeksana is their orthodox spinner who has always been there and provided great effort for this side. Going into pace options, Dusmantha Chameera, 68 wickets, has been a very important right-handed piece for years, while Dunith Wellalage’s unique style gives this Sri Lanka bowling even more flair from the left side.
