Replacement player Abdullah Shafique shone with the bat when it really mattered, while the others chipped in around him as Pakistan bounced back from the opening Test defeat to win this Test match by 8 wickets and finish the series on level terms 1-1 in this 2-Test match series. Abdullah Shafique, coming into this match in place of the injured Shan Masood, who scored a ton in Test 1, put on a batting masterclass while others like Sajid Khan and Ali Usman chipped in with the ball. Babar Azam got runs too in this Test match.
With this win, Pakistan finally got an away win after a long wait, while West Indies were left to rue another batting collapse in the second innings. There were positives for both sides, and fittingly, it finished 1-1 between two evenly matched sides ranked 8th and 9th in the WTC standings. Justin Greaves & captain Roston Chase’s steady innings helped West Indies post a competitive 344 in 105.4 overs
Winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Brandon King came out to bat for West Indies while Mohammad Ali had the ball in hand for Pakistan. The hosts, West Indies, got off to a brisk start at the Queens Sports Club in Trinidad with King being the aggressor and doing the bulk of the scoring while Chanderpaul played second fiddle. The opening duo put on 49 for the first wicket before Chanderpaul fell for 15 off 32 balls with 2 fours to his name to Mohammad Ali. Kavem Hodge came out to bat at 3.
King and Hodge tried to forge a decent partnership and added 16 runs for the second wicket before King fell after getting a start for 46 off 50 balls with 9 fours to his name to Ali Usman. Amir Jangoo came out to bat next. Jangoo and Hodge added 26 more runs for the third wicket before Hodge fell for 10 off 44 balls to Sajid Khan. Keeper batter Shai Hope came out to bat next.
Both Jangoo and Hope got starts as the duo could add 29 runs for the 4th wicket before Jangoo fell for 26 off 55 balls with 3 fours to his name to Ubaid Shah. Justin Greaves came out to bat to join Hope in the middle. Hope and Greaves then joined forces and stabilised things for the West Indies with a 53-run stand for the 5th wicket before Hope fell for 29 off 68 balls with 3 fours and one six to his name to Mohammad Ali, who cleaned him up. West Indies were in trouble at 173/5 in 50.4 overs as captain Roston Chase joined Greaves in the middle.
Greaves and Chase led West Indies’ fightback from a precarious position, and both batted with ease, showing great application. Both got to their well-deserved half-centuries but will be a tad disappointed in not converting into triple figures. At least, one of them had to. The duo batted over 30 overs and put on an important 96 runs for the 6th wicket before Greaves fell for a well-made 73 off 150 balls with 9 fours to his name to Ali Usman. Chase and Roach added 35 runs for the 7th wicket to take West Indies past 300 before the captain Chase fell for a good-looking 70 off 126 balls with 11 fours to his name to Ubaid Shah, who cleaned him up. Shamar Joseph came out to bat next. Joseph and Roach added 19 runs in about 4 overs for the 8th wicket before Joseph fell for 8 off 7 balls with one four to his name to Sajid Khan. Jomel Warrican came out to bat next. Just 3 runs were added to the tally before Roach fell for 19 off 62 balls with 3 fours to his name to Sajid yet again. Jayden Seales walked out to bat at 11.
The last-wicket pair of Seales and Warrican added a valuable 18 runs for the final wicket before Seales was the last man out for 8 off 18 balls with one four to his name to Sajid yet again, who cleaned up the tail. Warrican remained unbeaten on 5 off 22 balls as West Indies finished with 344 in 105.4 overs. 35 extras were conceded by the fielding team, Pakistan.
Sajid Khan was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with figures of 4/85 in 32.4 overs. Ali Usman chipped in with 2/80 in 35 overs. Ubaid Shah finished with 2/66 in 14 overs. Mohammad Ali finished with 2/67 in 22 overs. Salman Ali Agha bowled 2 overs for 13 runs. Now it was the turn for Pakistan to begin their first innings.
Abdullah Shafique’s masterful 160* helps Pakistan post 387 in 115 overs
Azan Awais and Imam-ul-Haq came out to open the batting for Pakistan while Kemar Roach had the ball in hand for West Indies. The opening duo got off to a decent start but could not carry on much longer as they put 34 runs for the first wicket inside 8 overs before Imam fell for 14 off 17 balls with 2 fours to his name to Shamar Joseph. Abdullah Shafique walked out to bat next. Awais and Shafique then joined forces to lay the platform for Pakistan to take the innings forward.
Abdullah Shafique looked good from the get-go while Awais settled into the innings and got a half-century under his name. The duo put on an impressive 64 runs for the second wicket before Awais fell for 55 off 71 balls with 10 fours to his name to Jomel Warrican. At 98/2, Abdullah Shafique was joined by the captain Babar Azam. From hereon, it was all Pakistan as this partnership for the third wicket took the game away from West Indies.
The duo batted with great conviction and authority and took the challenge head-on. They batted for over 50 overs and put on a stand that would turn out to be the turning point in this match, which was relatively low scoring. Babar looked back in form and deserved a ton, while Shafique completed his ton. They never looked back and put Pakistan in a very strong position. They put on 183 runs for the third wicket, and all was set for a Babar ton after 4 years, but against the run of play, Babar was out for 88 off 147 balls with 10 fours and one six to his name, run out.
That run out also took Brandon King out of the game as he threw down the stumps and hurt his lower back and was stretchered off the field, never to be seen again in the Test match. Awais Zafar came out to bat next. Zafar did not last long as just 2 runs were added to the tally before he fell for 1 off 8 balls to Warrican. Salman Ali Agha came out to bat next. Just 3 runs were added to the score before Salman fell for a 4-ball duck to Shamar Joseph as West Indies made a mini-comeback into the Test match.
Keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan came out to bat next. Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan added 25 runs for the 6th wicket before Rizwan fell for 18 off 29 balls with 3 fours to his name to Warrican, who cleaned him up. Sajid Khan came out to bat to join forces with Shafique. It was all about Shafique at the end of the day, but credit to Sajid also for putting his hand up and making a valuable contribution with the bat in hand. The duo added a more than useful 59 runs for the 7th wicket before Sajid fell for 30 off 72 balls with 4 fours to his name to Jayden Seales. Ali Usman came out to bat next.
Usman and Abdullah Shafique added 17 runs for the 8th wicket before Usman fell for 10 off 21 balls with 2 fours to his name to Warrican. Ubaid Shah came out to bat next. Now, the innings ended quickly as the tail was wiped out in a jiffy. The score remained at 387 when Shah fell for a silver duck to Warrican, who cleaned him up. Mohammad Ali came and went for a golden duck as he was too cleaned up by Warrican. Pakistan had a first-innings lead of 43 as West Indies came out to bat in their second innings.
Sajid Khan & Ali Usman’s 4-wicket hauls skittled West Indies out for 117 in 46.1 overs
Faced with a deficit of 43 runs, West Indies came out to bat with Tagenarine Chanderpaul opening the batting with Kavem Hodge, with Brandon King unavailable to bat due to injury. The openers once again got off to a brisk start as they put on 40 runs for the first wicket in about 9 overs before Chanderpaul fell for 17 off 25 balls with 2 fours to his name to Sajid Khan. Amir Jangoo walked out to bat next. Jangoo and Hodge tried to forge a partnership and added 22 runs for the second wicket before Jangoo fell for 13 off 23 balls with 2 fours to his name to Sajid.
Captain Roston Chase walked out to bat next. Hodge and Chase added 12 runs for the third wicket before Hodge, the set batter, fell for 34 off 71 balls with 5 fours to his name to Ali Usman. Keeper batter Shai Hope came out to bat to join Chase in the middle. Hope and Chase added 25 runs for the 4th wicket before Hope fell for 15 off 63 balls with one four to his name to Sajid Khan. Night watchman Jayden Seales came out to bat next.
Seales did not last long, as just 2 runs were added to the score before Seales fell for a golden duck to Sajid as West Indies lost half their side with just over 100 runs on the board. Justin Greaves came out to bat next. Just two runs were added to the score before captain Chase fell for 17 off 45 balls with 2 fours to his name to Usman. The score stayed at 103 as Roach was dismissed for a 6-ball duck to Usman, who cleaned him up. Shamar Joseph came out to bat next. Babar Azam & Abdullah Shafique complete the formalities as Pakistan level the series 1-1
Chasing 75 for the win, Azan Awais and Imam-ul-Haq came out to open the batting for Pakistan while Kemar Roach had the ball in hand for West Indies. The duo got off to a steady start and put on 15 for the first wicket before Imam fell for 9 off 13 balls with one four to his name to Jayden Seales. Abdullah Shafique came out to bat next. Abdullah Shafique looked in wonderful touch while Awais looked decent out there.
The duo chipped away at the runs and took Pakistan closer to the target. The duo added 27 runs for the second wicket before Awais fell for 18 off 49 balls with one four to his name to Shamar Joseph, who cleaned him up. Captain Babar Azam walked out to bat next with Pakistan needing another 33 runs to win. The duo of Shafique and Babar then made sure there were no further hiccups or drama in this chase. Babar played himself in before unleashing his shots while Shafique was steady throughout.
The duo were determined to take their side over the line, and they did that. Babar finished things off in style with a couple of sixes off Warrican, one over deep midwicket and the winning hit straight down the ground over long-off as Pakistan crossed the finishing line in style. The duo put on an unbeaten 35 runs for the third wicket. Shafique was unbeaten on 24 off 51 balls with one four to his name as he was not dismissed in this Test match across both innings. Babar was unbeaten on 24 off 30 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes to his name.
2 extras were given by the West Indies team as Pakistan got to the target in 23.3 overs, winning by 8 wickets. For the West Indies, Jayden Seales finished with 1/9 in 5 overs. Shamar Joseph finished with 1/17 in 4 overs. Kemar Roach finished with 0/11 in 2 overs. Jomel Warrican finished with 0/38 in 11.3 overs. Kavem Hodge finished with 0/2 in 1 over. So, the series finishes 1-1 in this 2-Test series. Abdullah Shafique was awarded the Player of the Match while Justin Greaves and Babar Azam were awarded Player of the Series.

So, with this, the 2-Test series between West Indies and Pakistan came to an end. Pakistan will now head to England to play a 3-match Test series against the hosts from 19th August onwards, while West Indies will have CPL action now followed by their limited-overs tour to India in late September. Plenty to look forward to in different formats for both teams.
