In the final match of this afternoon, it was between two sides that have slowly created one of the most intense rivalries in African cricket. As Uganda had shocked the world and beat Zimbabwe in the 2024 World Cup qualifiers, this time around, the Chevrons won in convincing fashion by 5 wickets.
With Zimbabwe showing that they are eager to make it once again to a place where they consistently before two years ago, this match gave them real hope that they will reach that stage once again and play like a full-time member. Captain Sikandar Raza was once again brilliant and showed a great sense of urgency to help guide his team to having a dominant performance, while also building chemistry.
For Uganda, although they may have ended up losing this match, it may give them an increased eagerness to beat this side in the semi-finals if they make it there. Although it seemed like they were getting pretty outplayed, they still have a couple of easier matches to make amends for this loss and get back into the semi-finals.
Looking to make it back to the T20 World Cup for a 2nd time in a row, there is still plenty of opportunity left, and they will just have to clean up any issues they were facing to not end up in another massive blowout. Their captain in Riazat Ali Shah, has proven to shock some big teams and will try gathering his troops to show that potential once again.
Uganda: Solid First Innings Was Heavily Carried By The Middle-Order
One thing to notice when seeing Uganda bat today was the fact that their middle-order did much of the heavy-lifting, while their top pieces weren’t really in great form. Opener Raghav Dhawan did score 29 runs in just 19 deliveries, while having 5 boundaries, but seeing Robinson Obuya go for 6 on the other end caused some early pressure. With Cyrus Kakru going quickly after him due to a rough shot played on a delivery by Blessing Muzarabani, they were already two down within four overs.
But, then the big partnership between Dhawan and Sumeet Verma struck for almost 40 runs as they both were able to drag this team out of the powerplay plus create a more favorable score.
Being 73/3 when Dhawan lost his wicket, Verma continued his dominance with Riazat Ali Shah as they both struck some wonderful boundaries. Nearing the 100 mark, that was when Sumeet Verma’s wicket was taken for 45 runs on just 32 deliveries as he smacked 4 sixes plus a single boundary to really bolster the strike rate.
With Ali Shah continuing, him and Alpesh Ramjani created a 37-run partnership as Ramjani scored 14 key runs towards the back end. But as soon as he was removed, wickets started piling on with Dinesh Nakrani gone, and the captain also being caught out for 35 runs. Looking at this, their bowlers couldn’t create any run-scoring prowess as Uganda ended at 152/9.
Zimbabwe: Amazing Work By Spinners and Pacers In This Match
Looking at Zimbabwe’s bowling attack, it was a great all-around effort as everyone stepped in helping Uganda limit their total. Starting with Blessing Muzarabani, this was one of the right-handed pacers’ most iconic performances as he took three wickets, plus just gave up 5 runs an over during his full quota.
Looking like he was starting to get back into form, his bouncers were on-point while also using tremendous change-of-pace operations to give more control to his action. Getting many big pieces like Robinson Obuya and Cyrus Kakru out, he really stood up to the challenge, while supporting their main left-handed piece in Richard Ngarava.
With Ngarava also taking two wickets today, he looked very elite with the pace on his deliveries, while his control was on-point as well. Despite him being pretty expensive, it was partly because Sumeet Verma kept taking him on, and that is one batsman who can really take over his weaknesses. Although Tinotenda Maposa was expensive as well in his limited overs, the right-handed Brad Evans had a performance not to forget as he removed three batsmen and was going at an economy rate of 6.33 during his three overs.
Someone who is a medium-pacer, his deliveries really fooled many batsmen from taking him on, while Sikandar Raza was this side’s main spinner once again, with a brilliant 5.50 economy.
Zimbabwe: Successful Run Chase Was Led By Their Main Anchors On This Side
Zimbabwe’s batting performance was remarkable due to a few pieces that carried a huge load and helped them get past that 157 mark. Opener Brian Bennett had another very strong afternoon as he scored 72 runs on just 44 balls while hitting a combined 12 boundaries. With 9 of them being for four, while the remaining 3 were long-balls that landed for six, it was clear he was on a mission to attack and find open parts of the ground.
Leading them, he did a huge deal of work in a 34-run opening partnership with Tadiwanashe Muramani, who had a pretty slow performance at 6 runs in just 5 deliveries faced. As soon as Muramani go out, their second biggest key anchor in Brendan Taylor made one of the biggest differences with a 39-run knock.
Getting very innovative with just not settling for fours, but also hammering 4 sixes, it was clear what is intentions were and how his six-hitting prowess has continued growing. Someone who keeps coming back stronger after his three-year ban, he was able to get Zimbabwe to 109 before getting out. As Bennett’s wicket following him.
Sikandar Raza had another crucial 24-run knock, which included two fours and very strong knack for running quickly between wickets. With him also following right after Ryan Burl got out, Tashinga Musekiwa was called up to hit a match-winning six and seal the deal for Zimbabwe to win their opening group stage match.
Uganda: Bowlers Really Didn’t Help The Cause Of A Lower Run Chase
Talking about Uganda’s bowling, there were not many options that succeeded today in this tough effort to win the match. Juma Miyagi did pick up two wickets as their main piece, but he was also getting absolutely demolished earlier on, and gave up 42 runs in his full quota of overs.
Meanwhile, left-handed orthodox bowler Alpesh Ramjani also had massive issues with picking up key wickets as his three overs led to a near 9.00 economy, while the top-order had taken advantage of him. With Henry Ssyendo having gotten a wicket, he was quite expensive today, while Joseph Baguma really didn’t have much of a performance to get excited about as well.
