They beat a three-way competition, the contenders of which are still to be confirmed. The winning bid for the Yorkshire county-run side is GBP 100 million.

It is the sixth Hundred franchise sold by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and third IPL franchise, after Mumbai Indians and Lucknow SuperGiants, to bag a team in the 100-ball competition. Over the last few days, the English board has sold London Spirit, Oval Invincibles, Welsh Fire, Manchester Originals and Birmingham Phoenix. Two more teams – Trent Rockets and Southern Brave – are up for sale.

SunRisers, managed by the Chennai-based Sun Group, are an old hand in the field of franchise cricket. They are a Hyderabad-based side in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and they also have a team in SA20 – SunRisers Eastern Cape.

Kavya Maran’s SRH Bag Northern Superchargers to Strengthen IPL Influence In The Hundred 2025

Chennai-based media conglomerate Sun Group owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise in BCCI’s lucrative IPL competition. The media group also owns the Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise in Cricket South Africa’s SA20.

On February 5, the SRH owners acquired Northern Superchargers in England-based The Hundred just months prior to the launch of the 2025 edition of the tournament. As reported by Cricbuzz, the winning bid for the Superchargers franchise is GBP 100 million. The report also indicates that the Sunrisers (SRH) owners purchased 49 percent stakes in the Superchargers, and they will now be entering a period of negotiation with the Yorkshire County.

The Sun Group, owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH), won the bid to buy the entire stake of the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. As per reports, the Chennai-based media conglomerate has paid just over £100m in the virtual auction for a 100% stake in the franchise. There were two other parties interested in the deal, but the Sun Group eventually outbid them.

SunRisers (SRH)were always favourites to take the Superchargers and they went strongly after it. One of the low-profile sides, the SRH management is known not to interfere in cricketing affairs of the team.

They are currently led in the IPL by Pat Cummins, arguably one of the most respected international captains. They finished runners-up in the IPL last year. In SA20, they are two-time defending champions. Having bought 49 per cent at a valuation of 100 million GBP, they will now enter into a period of negotiations with Yorkshire county.

Earlier this month, another IPL franchise, the Lucknow Super Giants, acquired 49 percent stakes in Manchester Originals. Moreover, last month, several media outlets reported that the Mumbai Indians franchise also purchased stakes in the Oval Invincibles.

They also became the third Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise to own a franchise in the hundred-ball tournament. Previously, Mumbai Indians owners, the Ambani family, negotiated a £60m price for a 49% stake in the Oval Invincibles and Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka agreed to around £81m deal for 70% of Manchester Originals.

Apart from that, IT entrepreneur Sanjay Govil bought 49% stage of Welsh Fire for £40m and Birmingham Phoenix sold the same stage to the owners of Birmingham City football club, Knighthead Capitals for £40m.

A big money deal also happened between Lord’s-based London Spirit and a Silicon Valley consortium led by Nikesh Arora. It is believed that the IT consortium bought a 49% share of the franchise for a mammoth £40m – over £100m more than the price of Welsh Fire and Birmingham Phoenix. The iconic Lords helped the franchise and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to sell it at a premium rate.

The two other franchises, Southern Brave and Trent Rockets are also expected to be sold sooner rather than later. As per BBC, Nottinghamshire are also set to sell a 49% stake in the Rockets when the sales resume before the weekend. An unnamed IPL franchise is set to be interested in the deal.

Back in January, the ECB unveiled the entire schedule of The Hundred 2025 season. Marking the fifth edition of the tournament, the 2025 season will once again feature 34 matches each from men’s and women’s competitions, including one eliminator and a final after 32 league games.

With the growing influence of IPL in The Hundred, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have now sold six of the eight franchises from their prestigious 100-ball tournament. Over the last few days, the English board has sold London Spirit, Oval Invincibles, Welsh Fire, Manchester Originals and Birmingham Phoenix.

Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, are very likely to own Southern Brave. The county club, Hampshire is on the verge of a takeover, as DC are set to invest heavily and own the majority of the stakes. Since Brave are part of Hampshire, it is expected for the IPL franchise to close out the deal soon.
