SRH vs GT: “The Dream Is To Play Test Cricket”- Sai Sudharsan Eyes Playing Red Ball Cricket After Making A Mark In T20s

Sai Sudharsan, one of GT’s most consistent performers since joining the team in 2022, had an impressive 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, scoring 527 runs in 12 matches. In the ongoing 2025 edition, Sai Sudharsan has already amassed 186 runs in three matches. Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudarsan has underlined the importance of hunger and dedication in contributing to team success. He stressed that his focus remains on helping the team win, regardless of past performance.

Sai Sudharsan’s career -A glimpse

After the loss in the finals of the recently  ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 ,in the built up to the future the Indian selectors decided to rest likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the consequent ODI tour to South Africa .Under the captainship of KL Rahul one youngster who grabbed the eyeballs of the selectors was the prolific performer Sai Sudarshan. Sai Sudharsan in the absence of New Zealand’s star batter Kane Williamson played a vital role in the recently concluded IPL season 2023.

An elegant lefthander and Engineer Sai Sudharsan has been a prolific and consistent performer since his starting days at Tamil Nadu, only to increase his consistency batting at No 3 at the highest level. Through the consistent performances at domestic levels and TNPL, Sai Sudarsan was selected By Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

In the absence of injured Kane Williamson ,Sai Sudharsan came in as the impact player for Gujarat and then through the entire IPL season was effective at No 3 with te the bat at crucial junctures for his team .His career defining knock though came against Chennai Super Kings in the Final where he scored 96 runs in 47 balls .

Though Gujarat lost the final, this performance earned Sai Sudharshan a call to India A side where again at No 3 he scored 103 runs against Pakistan A to give India A a victory, thus continuing his form in the upcoming domestic season Sudarsan rightly grabbed the eyeballs of many players especially his own state teammate and the Indian offs pinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

An prolific left hander through his performances with he bat, Sai Sudharsan aims to play and represent India in the whites in the future and has opened his views on the same.

Mr. Consistent 23 Year Old Sai Sudharsan wishes to play Test matches cricket for India

22-year-old left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan is in red-hot form these days. The cricketer from Tamil Nadu has played three matches in IPL 2025 for Gujarat Titans and, with the help of two half-centuries, has scored 187 runs. He slammed 74 runs against Punjab Kings on March 25 but was not able to help his side win the match at Narendra Modi Stadium. However, his next two knocks – 63 and 49 – helped the Shubman Gill-led side beat the Mumbai Indians and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 36 runs and 8 wickets, respectively.

Sai Sudharsan, who scored more than 500 runs for GT in the IPL 2024, was retained by the Ahmedabad-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, and despite having the likes of Jos Buttler in the squad, the team management backed him to open the innings as well. Sai Sudharsan, who has also played three ODIs and one T20I for India so far, he is happy to play as an opener, and the role has given him more freedom to express himself.

“When I first heard that I was opening, I was really happy. And I also gained a bit more confidence from them (GT management) giving me that responsibility, especially when we have an explosive opener like Jos Buttler. It gave me a lot of confidence and freedom, knowing that we have a lot of batting depth and experienced batters coming after me. So, I feel that has given me more freedom to express myself,” Sudharsan was quoted as saying by Times of India.

Sai Sudharsan has been playing in the IPL for four seasons now, and he wants to improve in every possible area of his game to become a better batter and fulfil his dream of playing Test Cricket for India.

“There are top-quality batters in India, especially openers. I feel I’m trying to improve in every possible area of my game. I keep trying to improve and become a better batter. I feel whenever I get an opportunity, I’ll try to be equipped for that and do my best for the country,” he said.

“Obviously, the dream is to play Test cricket. I think you have to dream really big to achieve what you want to achieve. Right now, I’m taking baby steps and thinking about the IPL, but why not? Definitely, I would love to equip myself to play in those (England) conditions and do my best for the country,” he added.

Sai Sudharsan is currently the second-highest run scorer in the ongoing IPL 2025, with 186 runs in three innings, including two fifties. He is just behind Lucknow Super Giants batter Nicholas Pooran, who has scored 201 in four innings.
