SL vs IND: Sonal Dinusha’s Fighting Knock Keeps Sri Lanka In Contest

Sonal Dinusha‘s unbeaten 85 in 136 balls hitting 6 fours and 2 sixes  helped the hosts resist India’s dominant bowling attack as the second Test in Colombo remained alive after a rain-hit Day 3. Sri Lanka may still be staring at a sizeable deficit, but Sonal Dinusha has ensured that India cannot close the door on the contest just yet.

On Day 3 of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, Dinusha produced another determined lower-order performance, remaining unbeaten on 85 as Sri Lanka reached 265/8 at stumps.  India had already established a commanding position by declaring their first innings at 503/9, leaving Sri Lanka 238 runs behind at the end of the day. However, Dinusha’s resistance, alongside Pasindu Sooriyabandara’s 80, prevented India from completely taking the game away. 

Sonal Dinusha Continues Remarkable Run

What makes Sonal Dinusha’s latest innings particularly significant is the consistency behind it. The Sri Lankan batter had already scored a century in the first Test in Galle and followed it with 84 in the second innings. In Colombo, he has once again become the backbone of Sri Lanka’s lower order.

Sonal Dinusha’s unbeaten 85 in 137 balls on Day 3 means Dinusha has now scored 80-plus in each of his first three Test innings against India, joining an exclusive group that includes Everton Weekes and Zaheer Abbas. It is a remarkable start to his Test career and underlines his ability to handle pressure against a strong Indian attack. 

India’s Bowlers Keep Applying Pressure

Despite Dinusha’s resistance, India remained firmly in control. Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar led India’s attack as Sri Lanka struggled to build partnerships. Prasidh Krishna claimed three wickets, while Manav Suthar also picked up three, repeatedly breaking through Sri Lanka’s attempts to establish a long-term recovery. 

India’s challenge, however, has been finishing off the innings. With Sri Lanka eight wickets down, India would have expected to wrap up the innings quickly. Instead, Dinusha continued to frustrate the visitors alongside Lahiru Kumara, who was unbeaten on eight when rain and bad light brought the day’s play to an early conclusion.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara produced an impressive 80 in 133 balls & hit 9 fours, playing an important role in delaying India’s push for the final two wickets. His innings gave Sri Lanka another substantial contribution after the top order struggled to make an impact.

Sri Lanka Still Face a Huge Challenge

While Dinusha’s innings has kept the contest alive, the numbers remain heavily in India’s favour. India’s 503/9 declared has left Sri Lanka needing another 238 runs simply to draw level with India’s first-innings score, while they still have to survive India’s attack before thinking about building a lead. 

For India, the priority will be to remove Sonal Dinusha and Lahiru Kumara quickly and secure a significant advantage. For Sri Lanka, everything now depends on extending this resistance.

A Fight That Refuses to End

Sonal Dinusha’s innings may not have changed the overall balance of the Test, but it has changed its immediate narrative. India remain in control, yet Sri Lanka’s lower order has refused to surrender. And once again, Sonal Dinusha has shown that he is becoming one of Sri Lanka’s most dependable resistance batters when the pressure is at its highest.
