Pretoria Capitals entered Boland Park and upstaged the home side Paarl Royals by 21 runs in a low scoring game in Match 19 of the tournament to climb upwards to 3rd in the points table. After a few days of washouts, we had a full game and it was a low scoring game. The Capitals after batting first rode on an unbeaten 42 off 35 balls from Sherfane Rutherford to post a paltry but competitive 138/9 which was a good score given the conditions.
In defence of their target, Keshav Maharaj the captain’s impressive spell of 2/14 in 4 overs outshone David Miller’s 45 off 36 balls as the Royals’ skipper innings went in vain as they went down in this clash by 21 runs. Winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Connor Esterhuizen and Shai Hope came out to bat for Pretoria Capitals while Bjorn Fortuin had ball in hand for the Paarl Royals. The duo got Capitals off to a steady start as the duo put on 25 for the first wicket in 3.3 overs before Connor fell for 12 off 11 balls with one six to his name to Hardus Viljoen. Jordan Cox came out to bat next. Cox and Hope added 12 more to the score with Hope scoring more before Cox was dismissed for 4 off 7 balls with one four to his name to Nqobani Mokoena. Wihan Lubbe came out to join Hope in the middle.
The powerplay score for the Capitals was 45/2 in 6 overs and off to a steady start. The duo of Hope and Lubbe added 14 runs for the 3rd wicket before Lubbe fell for 8 off 5 balls with one six to his name to Daniel Lawrence. Dewald Brevis came to the middle next. Rutherford and Maharaj started to form some sort of a partnership and rebuild the innings for the visitors. The duo added 31 runs for the 7th wicket before Maharaj was run out for 12 off 16 balls with one four to his name. Lizaad Williams came out to bat next. Rutherford and Williams added 19 runs for the 8th wicket with Rutherford scoring bulk of the runs before Williams was run out for 4 off 2 balls with a boundary to his name. Lungi Ngidi came out to bat next and was cleaned up first ball by Viljoen for a golden duck. Gideon Peters came out to bat at 11.
Rutherford provided the final flourish as he added 14 runs off the last 5 balls of the innings to help Pretoria Capitals to 138/9 in 20 overs. Chasing 139 for the win, Lhuan dre Pretorius and Asa Tribe came out to open for Paarl Royals while Lungi Ngidi had ball in hand for the Pretoria Capitals. The Capitals got off to a perfect start as Ngidi removed Pretorius for a silver duck as the batter was caught plumb in front. Rubin Hermann came to the crease next to join Tribe in the middle. The duo started rebuilding things for the Royals and put on 34 for the second wicket before Tribe was dismissed for 14 off 10 balls with 2 fours to his name to Gideon Peters inside the powerplay.
Daniel Lawrence came out to bat to join Rubin in the middle. The powerplay score for the Royals was 34/2 in 6 overs. Just 4 runs were added to the score before Lawrence fell for 2 off 8 balls to Wihan Lubbe. Captain David Miller came out to bat next. Hermann and Miller then played through the middle phase trying to build a partnership from 38/3 and they did a decent job. Hardus Viljoen came out to bat next with 5 balls to spare in the contest. 8 more runs were added off the last 5 balls as the Royals finished with 117/6 in 20 overs losing the contest by 21 runs.
