Rubin Hermann had to sit on the sidelines and watch his younger brother Jordan rip up SA20 for the first two seasons. Instead of moping around feeling sorry for himself, Rubin Hermann knew the only way for him to gain entry into the SA20 was by banging the door down domestically. And that’s exactly what he did by smashing 436 runs at an average of 39.63 for the North West Dragons in the CSA T20 Challenge.

It placed Rubin Hermann fourth on the national run-scorers list even though he played a couple of games less than his contemporaries Matthew Breetzke, Ryan Rickelton and Reeza Hendricks. It was almost 100 runs more than Jordan’s 349. Rubin Hermann was now in exalted company and even boasted the highest strike rate of 145.33 for all the batters that had passed 400 runs in the competition.

It did not go unnoticed with Rubin Hermann  finally getting his SA20 break when the Paarl Royals picked him up at the auction with the Hermann family now torn between orange and pink. Rubin Hermann made it count by slamming match winning 44 runs in just 22 balls for Paarl Royals vs Durban Super Giants

Pitch Report and Toss

Pitch Report : Nice breeze blowing, which the batters need to pay attention to. We are more in the middle today – it is 58m and 61m to the sides, and the straight hit is 80m. The pitch is a bit dry, which both captains have referred to. When it is dry, you prefer to bat first to allow your spinners to get into the game. It is a bit dusty, so expect some turn but also expect the batters to whack it around a bit today.

Toss : Durban Super Giants skipper Keshav Maharaj won the toss and chose to bat with two changes as Jon Jon Smuts and Chris Woakes coming in the playing XI. Paarl Royal’s skipper David Miller who also wanted to bat first also made two changes in the playing XI bringing in  Keith Dudgeon and Eshan Malinga for Kwena Maphaka and Dunith Wellalage.

Spinners restricts Durban Super Giants to 142 for 7 in 20 overs

Quinton de Kock provided a perfect start and, alongside his opening partner Matthew Breetzke, put on 50 in the powerplay alone. De Kock was the aggressor, hitting three sixes and as many boundaries in his 30-ball 43 but DSG lost both its set openers in quick succession with the very economical Bjorn Fortuin providing the breakthrough.

Keshav Maharaj’s Durban side won the toss and went in to bat first, and looked composed after the first Powerplay session. The Super Giants made a few changes in their batting order, with Quinton de Kock opening with Matthew Breetzke. The pair were going steady and were 50/0 after six overs.

Bjorn Fortuin grabbed the ball in the ninth over for Paarl and broke the home team’s opening partnership, after catching Breetzke off his own delivery. In at No 3 instead of No 7 like their last game, Heinrich Klaasen arrived at the crease to partner De Kock, and had an early scare after David Miller dropped him off a Mujeeb Ur Rahman ball.

Mujeeb then got his wicket, but this time it was De Kock, who was caught on the boundary while trying to go big. Kane Williamson and Klaasen continued with their poor batting form and both gave their wickets cheaply, gifting two easy catches to the Paarl Royals. In the middle overs, the spinners took over and Durban’s middle-order felt the heat in their attempt to rebuild. Joe Root got Kane Williamson and Mujeeb sent back Heinrich Klaasen cheaply to reduce the home side to 81/4 in the 13th over.

The Giants scoring slowed down heavily in the middle of their innings and seemed to have lost the momentum set by De Kock and Breetzke. After 15 overs, they had reached 107/4.  Wiaan Mulder (24 off 27) and JJ Smuts (32 off 22) managed to arrest the slide with a 59-run partnership for the fifth wicket but the prior collapse meant they finished with yet another underwhelming total of 142/7.

The last five overs were stellar for Paarl but dismal for Durban, with only 35 runs put on the board. This was despite a decent 59-run partnership between Wiaan Mulder and Jon-Jon Smuts. Tight bowling from Paarl ensured that no sixes and just a single boundary was hit in the last five overs.

Jon-Jon Smuts (32 off 22) and Wiaan Mulder (24 off 27) rescued the innings somewhat, putting on 49 for the 5th wicket, which allowed the Super Giants to post 142/7 in their 20 overs. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/23), Fortuin (1/13) and Joe Root (1/18) were the pick of the bowlers for the Royals.

Rubin Hermann and Mitchell Van Buuren stars with the bat to give Paarl Royals 5 wicket win over Durban Super Giants.

The formidable Royals opening pair of Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Joe Root did not execute as per usual on Thursday night, with Chris Woakes removing Root in the first over for a duck. Pretorius looked deadly during Naveen-ul-Haq’s first over, but fell after he tried to smash Junior Dala over the ropes for the big one, with Maharaj taking the catch. Rubin Hermann covered up for the shortfall of the openers, putting on a quick 44 off 22 balls (4×4, 3×6).

Despite losing Root in the first over and the explosive Lhuan-dre Pretorius after a 13-ball cameo worth 25 in the fourth, Paarl finished the powerplay with a massive 70/2 and were already ahead on the asking rate thanks to Rubin Hermann. Rubin Hermann was the aggressor in his partnership with van Buuren. slamming three maximums and four more boundaries in his 22-ball knock of 44 before being the third dismissed.

But Durban’s star attraction, Noor Ahmad, removed the big-hitting Rubin Hermann with the most spectacular delivery of the match. Ahmad bowled Rubin Hermann with a googly that ripped through his defence. Paarl stayed around three runs ahead of the required run-rate throughout the middle of their batting innings, with Durban trying desperately to chase the game. After 13 overs, Paarl were on 106/3 and needed 42 runs off 37 balls to win the match.

Van Buuren, who chipped in a solid run-a-ball 41, then found company in skipper David Miller and the pair added 59 runs for the fourth wicket. The former became the second Paarl batter to miss out on a half-century when his side was only seven runs away, and Miller was run out in the following over in Dinesh Karthik’s call for a tight single. However, the former Indian ‘keeper struck a boundary to wrap things up in style.

The DSG players looked defeated by the 18th over, especially after Paarl captain David Miller was dropped by Williamson. Paarl eventually closed out the game with Dinesh Karthik slapping Naveen for a boundary to Durban out of their misery.

Presentations and Road Ahead

David Miller the winning PR skipper said :  Chuffed and pleased with the results. Nice performance with the ball. Malinga came in there and pulled it back. 20 in his first over and then three good overs on the trot. He’s got all the skills and showed what he’s truly worth.

We’ve had great starts at the top. Tonight shows that we do have depth in batting. Nice to close out the game the way we did. Pleased with Mitch, showed his class, and also Hermann who came out all guns blazing. It’s challenging. Been a tough 24 hours. Chuffed with the guys’ attitudes.

Keshav Maharaj the losing DSG skipper said : Maybe 15-20 runs too shy on a wicket like that. Pitch got a little bit better under lights. But I don’t think we took pace off enough in the powerplay. We know Klaasy is due and hopefully he gets three big performances. Thank you to the fans. We appreciate you. Obviously the results haven’t gone our way.

Bjorn Fortuin Player of the match for his miserly spell said : It was on the slower side which is generally what you expect here. Didn’t expect it to be that slow. We’re quite diverse as a group. We’ve got Rooty bowling off spin, myself left-arm and Mujeeb with mystery spin. We’ve set ourselves up nicely for the second half of the comp. Over the past few seasons I’ve been guilty of searching a bit too much and being loose.

Another strong performance from Paarl Royals who now have five wins in six matches this season as they consolidate their place at the top. The chase was quite a comfortable one thanks to the fireworks in the powerplay – first by Pretorius and then by Rubin Hermann. It didn’t leave the Durban spinners with much to defend, and allowed their middle-order to cruise towards victory.

A lot of credit for this win should go to the Paarl spinners who were brilliant. Fortuin, Mujeeb and Root combined to bowl 12 overs and gave away just 54 runs between them, while also picking up the wickets of the entire top four of DSG. The pitch was slow and stoppy, and they used the conditions to great effect, restricting the hosts to just 142.

That was the final home game for DSG this season, and it ended in another defeat, leaving them stuck at the bottom of the table. They now have three games on the road and even if they win all three, they might struggle to make the top four. Paarl Royals, meanwhile, are very well placed at the top of the table.
