Corbin Bosch claimed his SA20-best figures of 4-19 to help bowl out the visitors for just 107 before Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen put on 110 for the opening stand in just 11 overs to give MI Cape Town victory after winning the toss and electing to bowl first. MI Cape Town were excellent from the outset with Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch and Reeza Hendricks claiming spectacular catches to help dismiss the Sunrisers Eastern Cape for just 109.

Inspired by their fielding unit, the MI Cape Town bowlers responded with an equally excellent display, led by allrounder Corbin Bosch’s Betway SA20 career-best 4/19 and Kagiso Rabada’s 2/14. It has now set up an all-Western Cape Qualifier 1 with current table-toppers Paarl Royals set to meet MI Cape Town at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday, 4 February. The winner will advance directly to the final at the Wanderers on Saturday, February 8.

Pitch Report and Toss

Pitch Report : The deck of Cape Town’s Newlands is prominently known to offer assistance to the pacers with the new ball. Batting has been a little bit of an issue at this venue this season.  The surface at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town seems to be providing excellent batting conditions off late.

The average first innings total at the venue after three matches has amounted to 164. While spinners struggled a bit on the surface earlier in the tournament, Rashid Khan and Keshav Maharaj both managed to extract significant turn and bounce in the previous match hosted here last week. There will also be a hint of seam movement for the fast bowlers earlier in the innings with the new ball.

According to AccuWeather, the weather is expected to remain cloudy during the entire scheduled match time in Cape Town. The temperature will likely range between 21° and 22° during the game. While there is a slight possibility of mild rainfall in the second innings of the match, the forecast indicates that it will not be threatening enough to disrupt the proceedings.

Toss : MICT skipper Rashid Khan won the toss and chose to bowl with one change in the playing XI as Colin Ingram comes in. SEC skipper Aiden Markram batting first made as many as three changes with Tony De Zorzi making his debut in the playing XI.

Corbin Bosch takes four wickets as MICT skittles SEC for paltry 107 runs.

The Cape Town bowling unit, spearheaded by Corbin Bosch and Kagiso Rabada, put up a dominant show at the Newlands Cricket Ground. Their fielders also performed brilliantly as Eastern Cape was bundled out for 107.

It was a day when everything went right for the hosts starting from the toss which Rashid Khan won and asked the opposition to take first strike. David Bedingham found a brace of boundaries against Trent Boult but Kagiso Rabada first and Corbin Bosch after him managed to strangle the scoring. They were backed up by some sensational fielding, most notably from Dewald Brevis, who pulled off a stunning catch at deep square leg when it appeared like he’d lost the ball in the sun.

The best effort came from Brevis, who pulled off a full-stretch dive to grab a one-handed stunner at the boundary line. The event unfolded in the fourth over of the first innings. Bosch bowled a short-length delivery to Tom Abell. The Sunrisers batter attempted a pull shot to clear the deep square-leg boundary. The right-hander, however, failed to time it properly.

Brevis, who was well inside the rope, initially misjudged the trajectory of the ball. It could have gone for a boundary. But, the Proteas star jumped in the air, extending his right hand and the ball stuck into his clasp. The crowd was left stunned after witnessing his mind-blowing reflex. Abell also appeared to be in disbelief as he walked back to the pavilion, scoring just one run.

By the end of the PowerPlay, Sunrisers had crawled to 24 for 2. There was, however, no respite to follow as Rashid and George Linde gave away just 14 from the next three overs.

The pressure got to captain Aiden Markram, who hit Brevis straight to long-off to depart for a 19-ball 10. Rashid compounded the visitors’ misery by cleaning up Tristan Stubbs in the next over. Bedingham tried to hold the innings together but once he fell for a run-a-ball 45, the innings unraveled quickly. Corbin Bosch took three lower-order wickets and only Andile Simelane’s 21 helped Sunrisers pass the 100-mark.

David Bedingham tried his best to keep the Sunrisers’ afloat with a workmanlike run-a-ball 45, but did not have sufficient support from the moment his new opening partner Tony de Zorzi, who was on debut for the defending champions, succumbed early on to Rabada. Inspired by their fielding unit, the MI Cape Town bowlers responded with an equally excellent display, led by allrounder Corbin Bosch’s Betway SA20 career-best 4/19 and Kagiso Rabada’s 2/14.

Brevis later contributed to the run-out of Andile Simelane. Reeza Hendricks and Corbin Bosch were also exceptional on the field. After MI Cape Town notched a commanding ten-wicket victory, captain Rashid Khan heaped praises on his fielders.

Ryan Rickelton’s 59* and Rassie Van Der Dussen’s 48* powers MICT to thrashing 10 wkt win over SEC

The Cape Town openers – Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton – remained unbeaten while chasing a 108-run target. The duo took only 11 overs to wrap up the game. Rickelton registered 59 runs off 36 balls, while Van der Dussen added 48 to the score. The hosts were never challenged in response once van der Dussen began the chase with a four and a six in the first over from Marco Jansen.

The MI Cape Town run chase was never in doubt with Ryan Rickelton (59 not out off 36 balls, 8×4, 1×6) and Rassie van der Dussen (48 not out off 30 balls, 4×4, 2×6) hardly needing to drop down to second gear during their 110-run unbroken opening partnership. Van der Dussen displayed the early intent by striking Marco Jansen for a boundary and six in the first over before Rickelton continued his growing affection with Newlands.

The only blip on a flawless evening for MI Cape Town was van der Dussen missing out on a half-century by two runs after Rickelton had raised his bat to another sold out Newlands crowd moments earlier.

There were at least two boundaries scored in each of the first four overs as the openers shaved off 71 runs from the target within the PowerPlay. Rickelton found a pair of boundaries at the end to complete his half-century while van der Dussen was left stranded on 48. That minor statistical quirk notwithstanding, the century stand enabled MICT to get over the line with a bonus point.

Presentations and Road Ahead

Rashid Khan the winning skipper of MICT said : Fielding is something that is very important. The way we fielded first 10-15 overs, we gave that extra energy to our bowlers. Fielding is something that is always in our control, especially the effort you put. Our catching put us ahead in the game.

It was tough to field in that corner with the sun there, it was one of the best catches I’ve seen. Reeza as well was incredible with a couple of catches. It was important to finish with a bonus point and finish in the top two.

The way Rassie and Ryan have been batting has been fantastic, we hope that they continue the same way. To be honest, we had a tough couple of years but this time we gelled as a a team and spoke about doing the basics right. We wanted to forget the last two years and focus on our results for this year. Everyone is taking responsibility this year, everyone is contributing. The crowd support also has been fantastic, they give us that extra energy.

Aiden Markram the losing SEC skipper said : Got to give credit to the Cape Town team, put pressure on us from the start. One that we want to forget. You don’t want to have any excuses, we want to be better and put pressure on the opposition. Massive room for improvement, we have another home game where we have a nice opportunity to do well. Hope we can put on a good show back home.

Corbin Bosch Player of the Match for his 4 wickets said :  (On the caught and bowled) I didn’t see it for very long, just one of those days where everything goes your way. Super grateful. The crowd has been incredible with 4 sold out games, glad to perform for them. We just discussed all the batters and the options against them, nothing different.

MI Cape Town continued their surge in the second half of the season with a crushing 10-wicket win over Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Newlands. Corbin Bosch took 4 for 19 as the holders were bowled for a paltry 107, a target that openers Ryan Rickelton (59* off 36) and Rassie van der Dussen (48* off 30) chased down in just 11 overs.

MI Cape Town have got through on a canter, they defeat the reigning champs by 10 wickets here in Newlands. The job was done in the first innings when they didn’t allow the SEC batters to get away. Barring a 45 from Bedingham, the visiting batters struggled as Corbin Bosch picked up a four-fer. In response. the MI Cape Town openers made light work of the chase.

Van der Dussen continued his fine form as he attacked Jansen in the first couple of overs. Rickelton started off slowly but made up the ground as he began finding the boundaries at will. The southpaw got to a fifty and then scored the winning runs, as the hosts have won with 9 overs to spare.

MI Cape Town delivered an emphatic all-round performance at Newlands, ensuring their place in the SA20 Playoffs. The highlight of their masterclass came with Dewald Brevis’s acrobatic catch, setting the tone for a dominant fielding display. The victory now leads to an all-Western Cape Qualifier 1 against the Paarl Royals at St George’s Park.

Their comprehensive victory was built on a formidable bowling display, with Corbin Bosch and Kagiso Rabada spearheading the assault. Corbin Bosch’s career-best 4/19 and Rabada’s disciplined 2/14 dismantled the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who were restricted to a mere 109 runs. In response, Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen cruised through the run chase with an unbroken 110-run partnership.

MI Cape Town’s dominating form offers a tantalizing prospect for the playoffs, with their all-round excellence setting a high standard. Meanwhile, the Sunrisers will face the Royals in a crucial league match to secure their playoff spot. The stakes continue to rise as teams vie for advancement in the tournament.

MI Cape Town currently hold the second place in the SA20 standings with 26 points. They will face Pretoria Capitals in the next game on January 31. The Sunrisers now have one all-important league match remaining against the Royals at St George’s Park on Saturday to secure their playoff berth.
