SA vs PAK: The Proteas Pick Up Their First Victory In This New WTC Cycle After Gaining Control
With the 2nd match between South Africa and Pakistan officially over, it was clear that this match changed completely towards one side in the past couple of days to make it much more interesting. As the Proteas were the side to make this massive comeback, they were completely dominant in all three phases once again and looked like their form in the last World Test cycle. Doing this without Temba Bavuma made it even better as they got many younger pieces to play at a high level and show that there are other veteran pieces who can give this side motivation. Captain Aiden Markram has been one piece that has taken a lot from Bavuma and shown his great ability in leading under pressure.
On the other hand, Pakistan has seemed to lose a lot of their confidence as many players on their team completely fell apart after looking like they were on top of the world a couple of days ago. A side that hasn’t been able to fight back whenever something doesn’t go right for them, it has been a tough trend and has led them to be a much less successful test side. Trying to formulate some kind of chemistry, it will be vital for them before going into a tough ODI series, where the Proteas have shown immense success against better sides. As Shan Masood has struggled to show that consistent ability he was able to in their series against England last year, his need to go back to the drawing board before their next test series has become almost essential now.
Pakistan’s Batting Lineup Has Continued Showing Massive Inconsistencies
Looking at the way Pakistan have batted throughout this series, it’s clear that their unit hasn’t been able to have one innings that’s caused a real threat. With opener Abdullah Shafique being completely out of it in his past two appearances after struggling during the first match, he was only able to follow his 57-run half-century with a score of 6. Looking completely fooled by spinners and not opening the face of the bat, it seemed nearly impossible for him to support Iman Ul-Haq, who also combined for just 26 runs. After having a very strong first match in which he scored nearly 100 runs, this time out it was a completely different story, with the opposition understanding how to attack him.
As Shan Masood also followed this similar trend by scoring 87 runs during his first batting time, it was very clear that during the 2nd innings, these South African bowlers got control of him and took many chances with him. Getting removed in just 5 balls for almost no runs, the only player who improved in the 2nd innings was Babar Azam. Knowing that people put him under tremendous pressure after a poor performance during his 16-run knock in the first innings, this was someone who kept Pakistan’s innings alive after hitting a half-century during that second one. With Saud Shakeel dropping from a 66-run innings to a 11, the only player that seemed consistent between both was Salman Ali Agha, as he was still able to still extend his side’s lead before they got all-out.
Spinners Have Continued Creating A Real Threat From Everywhere For This Unit
On the bowling side for South Africa, it was very clear that the spin attack carried the load and was a major reason they had such control in this match. With Simon Harmer being a key threat during that second innings after taking 6 wickets, this helped him finish with 8 throughout the innings. Someone who could really get turn on the ball and was a key from the right side, it was big since he became another piece that lessened Keshav Maharaj’s load. Looking at Maharaj, he was able to take an additional 7 wickets during the first innings, while also being able to swing in the ball. Keeping the economy around 2.5 throughout both, he has been massive when limiting boundaries.
Seeing that Senuran Muthusamy got limited overs during this match after an amazing first match, he did improve upon his economy pretty heavily from inning to inning. After allowing almost 4.7 an over during the first period, it fell well below 3, and he was close to picking up a few wickets. Closing out the spinners, Aiden Markram was also able to provide a 3.00 economy during his four overs and has remained a constant part-time piece. With Kagiso Rabada taking two wickets as their major pacer, his whip-like action was once again on display, while the pace kept on building itself, as Marco Jansen did have an impactful match on the left, too.
Proteas Batting Order Was Carried By A Few Batsmen During Clutch Situations
When looking at this South African batting attack, it was clear that some pieces really had a big performance in order to help this side cross the line. Looking at Aiden Markram, who looked like a much more consistent batsman in this match, he was able to get past 30 runs twice and looked like a real leader when going through this innings. Someone who has been heavily touted when his team is in trouble, he showed his comeback ability once again, as did Ryan Rickleton, who finished at 25 not out after facing some struggles earlier on. Being able to hit one massive six, alongside two fours, it was really important for him to be key from the left side as it will help him with innings ahead.
Seeing that Tristan Stubbs was able to hit a half-century during the first innings despite wickets falling around him, he smashed 76 runs and didn’t have to do much in his second turn as South Africa basically were just a few runs away from winning. Looking at De Zorzi also getting past 50 with three combined boundaries, this was a performance for Dewald Brevis to forget at his three-down position. Knowing that Verreynne and Marco Jansen tried producing some extra runs, their back order had a moment to not forget. Seeing Senuran Muthusamy was able to score a near century, their other impactful piece in Kagiso Rabada had hit 71 runs with 8 combined boundaries.
Pakistan’s Bowling Couldn’t Create That Same Factor Which Intially Helped Them
For Pakistan’s bowling attack, it was clear that their spinning options didn’t have the same impact that was provided during the first match. As Noman Ali did take 4 wickets once again, his economy became a real question during the 2nd innings he was bowling in. Giving up nearly 6 runs an over and not being able to find the center of the wicket, it was also due to the factor that Pakistan was basically completely out of this match. On the other side, Sajid Khan wasn’t great either as he only picked up two wickets throughout the whole match and had allowed almost 7 an over during his 2nd innings. With less ability to remove anyone as well, Shaheen Afridi was another bowler who had a performance to forget.
