IND vs SA: Indian Spinners Wrecks South Africa

With the 2nd day officially over between South Africa and India, this was one where both sides had their vital ups and downs in all phases. As the Proteas currently lead by 63 runs, it also comes at a stage in which they are already nearly bowled out and will need a miracle to get towards a high total.

A group that is missing all-world pacer Kagiso Rabada for this match, there will have to be more of a sense of urgency from their batting unit to continue producing some impactful runs. Captain Temba Bavuma has continued to motivate his group and prove how great a leader he is, helping make this match winnable for South Africa once again.

On the other hand, India have shown their true bowling prowess once again and are the major reason why they still have an advantage in this match. This unit, which lost Shubhman Gill to a tough neck injury, their fightback for the captain has been truly astounding and is a real sight to watch. With them close to improving on their 3rd place ranking during World Test Championship cricket, this group could just be a day away from winning the 5th match in 8 attempts. Knowing that Rishabh Pant has replaced Gill fully in this role as captain, unless he returns, it will be quite interesting to see how India does under their new captain, who has tons of experience leading his side.

India: Batting Really Struggled To Create Runs After A Massive Injury Struck

Looking at the way this Indian side batted today, it was pretty clear they lost a ton of energy and sense of joy after Gill had gotten retired hurt. With Sundar and KL Rahul starting today’s batting, their partnership ended up lasting 57 runs to put India at 75/2. Seeing that Sundar was the piece who ended up being gone, he managed to provide a 29-run knock, while hitting 3 boundaries with real force.

Knowing that Gill was the next batsman who had ended up getting injured and had to leave on his own, KL Rahul created an amazing 40-run partnership with Rishabh Pant to hit the 109 mark, having just lost 3 wickets within those first 40 overs.

As Rahul then got removed for 39 runs on 119 balls and hit five combined boundaries from the right side, this was the first all innings India had a true left-handed combination. Seeing that Pant kept going for his unique-looking shots and was batting at a strike rate over 100, he created a 23-run combination with Jadeja. After it was broken, and Dhruv Jurel went out quickly after that, another partnership between Axar Patel plus Ravindra Jadeja started looking like a threat. Scoring 18 runs together in quick time, while Axar started with two boundaries, this was basically India’s final hope, since after Jadeja ended up getting an LBW from Simon Harmer’s delivery, they could only score 18 more runs for 4 wickets lost.

South Africa: Bowling Attack Had A Fantastic Day Despite Their Top Piece Not Being There

As for the South Africa bowling side, it was a very strong outing for them, given that Kagiso Rabada was still not in the attack. The piece that really stood out in this match was Marco Jansen, as he was able to use his height from the left end and create bouncers and mix up his pace. Someone who can get the ball up from a very high elevation, he did it in this game, and was able to pick up three wickets during 15 overs of bowling, while having 4 maidens.

A guy who could always be expensive if he doesn’t have support around him, that wasn’t true today, as when looking at him, it was pretty clear he was on a one-man mission and completely locked in to his task.

Although Wiaan Mulder did get 5 overs as their other pacer, he wasn’t as effective because his inability to get a wicket nearly cost them. A piece that usually ends up making massive breakthroughs, he couldn’t deliver it in this match, but that ended up not being a problem because Corbin Bosch took over.

Seeing that Bosch is one of those bowlers who doesn’t tend to play in test matches, he made his name after removing Rishabh Pant and just allowing 32 runs. For spin, Simon Harmer really stood out with his 4-wicket haul and allowing less than 2 runs an over in 15.2, while Maharaj also had a vital 16 overs despite him being more expensive than normal.

South Africa’s 2nd Innings Ended Up Being Dominated By India’s Bowling

Now going into the 2nd innings, this ended up being a real nightmare for South Africa because they couldn’t get anything going. Seeing that the opening pair between Ryan Rickleton and Aiden Markram only went for 18 runs, this was a problem because their left-handed piece in Rickleton only departed for 11 runs after not even hitting 30 last match.

Having Markram go for 4 next, this side already found themselves at a 38/3 position after Wiaan Mulder hit one boundary. Losing Tony De Zorzi for just two right after, the only piece that scored more than 10 down the outside of Temba Bavuma, 29 not-out, was Marco Jansen, whose wicket made them 91/7.

India’s bowling attack was mostly carried by their spinners in this innings after picking up 7 wickets from the left end. The real star in this period was Ravindra Jadeja as he ended up taking 4 wickets and started creating amazing turn. Putting in 13 overs of work and having three strong maidens, he is really the name to remember after such a strong performance.

Kuldeep Yadav got in 5 strong overs and allowed just 12 runs, while also picking up two wickets on his own. Someone who has always been called to start for this side and finally got his shot, he really made a difference, while Axar Patel was also able to close it out pretty well with one wicket.

What Could Potentially Happen on Day 3?

Seeing that tomorrow is the third day of play during this first test match, it will be interesting to see how South Africa’s batting responds. As Temba Bavuma will continue at 29 not-out for this unit, and really hope to make a massive partnership with Corbin Bosch, he hopes to get the lead to over 150.

Knowing that is possible given past history under his leadership and captaincy, he will continue fighting till the very end, while hoping his bowlers can show up to finish the job as well. For India, it is just a matter of three wickets, and if they get it in quick time tomorrow, it could end up being a very fast match after their target won’t be so high.
