SA vs AUS: Arrogance Of Pat Cummins’ Brigade

Australian cricket team got a brutal reality check against South Africa in the 2nd Test match. Pat Cummins‘ unit got exposed in all the 3 facets of the game as they faced an innings defeat by 31 runs. Pat Cummins in the post-match presentation & press wasn’t bothered by the defeat. Pat Cummins, though, was quite confident that the team could bounce back and win the series even when the team had a lot of loopholes, as his optimistic attitude was quite bizzarre as he didn’t emphasize the areas due to which the Kangaroos lost the game in detail.

The Proteas, on the other hand, would be pumped up after their thrilling win over the mighty Aussies. Temba Bavuma & Shukri Conrad instilled a winning mindset in the players after the gigantic defeat in the 1st Test match. The way Temba Bavuma led the batting lineup was very inspirational, as his 179-run knock not only changed the complexion of the match but it can be said a tight slap to all Australian players & coaching staff members as South African skipper was sledged very cheaply by Aussie players.

Pat Cummins’ lack of wickets & runs is hurting Australia

Australian skipper hasn’t been able to assert dominance with neither bat or ball in hand. The Australian skipper has been pretty vocal about the performance of bowlers and about bouncing back in the 3rd Test match starting from 27th October at Cape Town. Australia is missing the player Pat Cummins, who might be overburdened with the responsibility of leading the side. Pat Cummins, though, would back himself to outshine the Proteas in the 3rd Test match. Pat Cummins, so far in 2 Test matches, has scored 86 runs in 4 innings & taken 4 wickets

Aussies are known for fighting comebacks, given how they won the 2014 Test series against South Africa. Undoubtedly, Cummins will take a leaf out of that 2014 Proteas triumph, as he wasn’t a part of the squad; the bowling attack comprised Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Nathan Lyon & James Pattinson, and it required a herculean effort from all Aussie players to thump South Africa in their own den under the leadership of former skipper Graeme Smith.

Fragile batting lineup problem for Australia

The way Travis Head smashed a ton in the 2nd Test match was a big positive for Australia. The problem with Australia is that the likes of Marnus Labuschagne & Steven Smith aren’t able to convert their starts, which has been a huge blow for Australia, as there’s too much pressure on the shoulders of Matthew Renshaw & Alex Carey. Marnus Labuschagne is receiving a lot of flak for his string of low scores, as his last Test ton was in the July 2023 Ashes series.

Pat Cummins has a tough call to make, given Marnus’ form is a concern, and including Cameron Green in a crunch match can be risky as well. Cameron Green’s all-round abilities are unquestionable, but the surface in Cape Town has a tendency to be very fast, bouncy & pacy, which can make life very tough & hell for Cameron Green, who is coming after battling the injury. It’s quite intricate whether Australia will play like 1st Test match or be complacent in 2nd Test match, as getting bowled out for 99 in 1st innings gave the Proteas an immense psychological advantage.

What lies ahead for Pat Cummins’ unit

It’s quite crystal clear that Pat Cummins & his team-mates will go for the throat of the Proteas in the 3rd Test match. The main problem for the Aussies is that whenever they don’t get a wicket or two in a session, they throw in the towel. Temba Bavuma knows how to frustrate the Aussies, as during the ICC WTC 2025-27 final, he did the same thing and got the mace/trophy. Pat Cummins can’t afford to be overconfident that they can beat the Proteas from any position, as that attitude in the 2nd Test match hurt them somewhat in their defeat.

The 3rd Test match is expected to be a classic one, given South Africa wants to prove to the world of cricket that their ICC WTC 2025-27 triumph wasn’t a fluke. South Africa’s head coach, Shukri Conrad, would be very much aware of the fact that the war is not over yet and a dangerous counter-attacking punch from Australia is about to land on them. It’s going to be a thrilling encounter, as the dark horse for Australia could be Steven Smith, as his string of low scores, with 83 runs in 2 Test matches, would motivate him to decimate South Africa in the 3rd Test match.

Steven Smith was made the villain in the 2018 Test series against the Proteas as the sandpaper gate, and cheating was proven by the ICC. Cricket Australia (CA) handed one year suspensions for Steven Smith & David Warner for their malicious work on the field. Aussies would be banking on Steven Smith to take the team out of the muddle if there’s any. Steven Smith was a part of 2014 Test series win over South Africa; he knows what it takes to beat South Africa in their home conditions. It won’t be wrong to say that if Smith is out cheaply, Proteas have a great chance to win the series, which time only will tell. Aussies are known for fighting back but can they fight in a critical match when mostly everyone in world cricket is rooting for their downfall?
