With the 5th T20I match of this Namibian tri-series officially in the books, it seemed to be one completely controlled by one side, while the other was getting dominated in every manner. Seeing that the stronger unit was Zimbabwe from the get-go, the match did take a little bit of turn at the end, but they ended up being the well-deserved winners.
A unit that was coming off two straight losses against South Africa and looking completely out of this tournament, everything changed for them, and it started with having better motivation. Led by Sikandar Raza, they didn’t seem like they were going anywhere and now seem almost more than ready to dominate.
Meanwhile, Namibia will have to go back to the drawing board as they could potentially face elimination against South Africa tomorrow. Despite starting this series in a very strong fashion, it seems like they lost that same spirit they had and now find themselves at the bottom of this table, 1-2.
Looking like a unit that may or may not qualify for the prized ODI World Cup in 2027, Namibia’s first goal is to defend their home fortress and finally string together a couple of victories instead of just getting close. Led by Gerhard Erasmus, he did definitely have this unit playing well, but it seemed very divided at the same time, and he must still work on making them collaborate.
Namibia: One-Man Show Leads This Side To Defendable Total
On the Namibian side, it was clear their efforts were mostly built around one player, while the rest fell in quick succession. Opening this unit’s hitting was Louren Steenkamp, who once again hit a few solid boundaries and created a nice 17-run partnership with Jan Frylinck. After getting out and Frylinck quickly being removed right after him, the whole story became about Gerhard Erasmus and his ability to play with conviction and power. Someone whose series started in a very struggling fashion, things seemed to change a lot after he realized his side was already 25/3 early on.
Creating an 83-run partnership early on, it was mostly based on a strong attitude and understanding of what the mission was, since this team had already been hand-strung from the beginning. Creating this special duo with Alexander Busing-Volschenck, they were able to get the score to 108 before Volschenck fell for 28 after playing in a much classier way.
While skipper Gerhard Erasmus was still the main aggressor, he then watched guys like JJ Smit and Ruben Trumpelmann fall before this unit finished at 156/6, with a last large spring. Finishing with 88 runs off 48 balls and smashing three massive sixes, while hitting eight boundaries, his confidence seemed to be more than back.
Zimbabwe: Multiple Bowling Options Changed The Phase Of This Game
On the Chevrons’ side, it was clear that the bowlers had one mission, and that was being proven from the first ball itself. With superstar right-handed pacer Blessing Muzarabani being a major bouncer threat, his ability to bowl from such a high length helped him take one wicket, while keeping an 8.5 economy. Coming off a one-match break, this was pretty impressive considering the conditions and the areas he was trying to attack on the pitch.
The other right-handed piece that showed up once again was Brad Evans, as he has now become the most consistent player on this unit, with two more wickets picked up and someone who doesn’t get demolished for boundaries.
Kundai Matigimu was another master player on this unit, as he developed a wicket-taking ability himself and took two in his own right, while also maintaining an economy well under 8. Despite being selected last match to replace Muzarabani, nothing much had seemed to be going right in his approach, and everything took a big swing today.
When talking about spinners, Sikandar Raza was an amazing 4-over option that continued producing turn on this pitch and took a wicket, while allowing just 27 runs. Outside of him, Wessly Madhevere got an over where he was able to develop a pretty low economy and keep the same pace running for this unit.
Zimbabwe: Innings Finished Off In Style After Innocent Kia’s brilliance
The Zimbabwe side was truly dominant in finishing today as easily chased down the required target, even though there was a small issue in the middle. Opener Brian Bennett started very strong after Ben Curran fell early, since he was able to put together 22 runs and also develop three strong looking boundaries.
Now, despite Ben Curran being a major star of the show once again, the real one was Innocent Kaia, as this was a piece that just didn’t play with power, but a consistent effort to find the boundary. Despite previously lacking the ability to showcase himself as the true threat who could change things for Zimbabwe, he has started showing immense potential this year.
Someone who created the early 61-run partnership before Bennett had to depart, he then created a very similar opportunity with Sikandar Raza as they ended up scoring over 50 runs together too. With Kaia hitting the 72 mark, he was able to develop 8 boundaries and get three sixes, which helped him move this side to an unbreakable chasedown.
Even though Innocent Kia got out then and Zimbabwe were at three-down a lot of the heavy-lifiting had been done before Raza got out and there was another flurry of wickets. During this period, Namibia seemed to be inching closer and looked like they would create an upset, but the Chevrons were able to finish it off with Marumani.
Namibia: Bowling Attack Nearly Pulled Off One Of The Biggest Upsets
For the Namibians, it was very clear that their bowlers had a plan at the end and nearly changed the match in their own hands. Starting with left-handed Ruben Trumpelmann, he ended up taking two massive wickets in this match and nearly changed the trajectory at the end. Despite being that force, his four over still caused him to allow above 10 in everyone and because of this expensive performance, it was not even easy for Jack Brassell to fix the issues despite giving up 8.5.
Looking at the other right-handed option in Max Heingo, it was quite shocking to see him only have two overs since he is someone that can play under pressure, while spinner Jan Balt was the star with just a 4.75 economy.
