Mohammad Amir has confirmed that his association with Pakistan cricket has come to an end after gaining British citizenship and becoming eligible to play as a local in English domestic cricket. Mohammad Amir retired from international cricket in December 2024, revealed that his new status has effectively closed the door on representing Pakistan again under the local-player category.
Mohammad Amir has been living in the United Kingdom for several years and has continued to build his career in English domestic and franchise cricket. His British citizenship, which he obtained through his marriage to British citizen Narjis Khan, has now significantly changed his status as a professional cricketer.
Mohammad Amir Explains Why His Pakistan Chapter Is Closed
Speaking about his current situation, Amir explained that playing as a local in major English competitions comes with certain conditions. Players classified as locals are required to sign documentation confirming that they cannot play for another country as a local player.
“I am a British local now. When you play in competitions such as the County Championship and The Hundred as a local player, you have to sign a document stating that you cannot play for another country as a local.”
Amir made it clear that the change means his previous association with Pakistan cricket cannot continue in the same way.
“So, the Pakistan chapter I had before is now closed.”
The development marks another major turning point in a career that has already seen several highs and challenges. While Amir can no longer pursue a return to Pakistan as a local player, his British status has given him greater opportunities in England, where he can participate in domestic competitions without occupying an overseas slot.
Amir Still Open to Playing in PSL as a Foreign Player
Although Mohammad Aamir’s Pakistan chapter has closed from a local-player perspective, Amir has not ruled out playing in the Pakistan Super League. The left-arm pacer remains open to featuring in the PSL as a foreign player, meaning his connection with Pakistani franchise cricket could continue despite his changed status.
Mohammad Aamir’s British citizenship has already benefited his English career, with Nottinghamshire signing him for the 2026 T20 Blast without using an overseas slot, after which he represented Trent Rockets in The Hundred as a local player. Mohammad Amir’s international career also produced an impressive record, with the pacer taking 259 wickets in 147 international matches across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. He was also part of Pakistan’s memorable 2017 Champions Trophy-winning campaign.
With international cricket now firmly behind him, Amir’s focus has shifted towards domestic and franchise opportunities. Aamir’s latest comments underline a significant change in his career, but they also show that becoming a British local has opened a new chapter for the experienced fast bowler rather than bringing his cricket journey to an end.
