The star bowler of KKR Varun Chakravarthy tweeted his views about the on going no ball controversy which happened in the yesterdays MI vs SRH match at the Wankhede Stadium. The statements have resulted in new perspectives about misbehaviour in sports culture for both cricket enthusiasts and retired athletes. Hardik Pandya’s team clinched a victory against SRH by 4 wickets. The Mumbai batting lineup successfully chased down SRH’s target of 163 runs in just 18.1 overs after losing only six wickets.
MI secured their third IPL victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad to keep their playoff hopes alive this season. A bizarre scene unfolded during the second innings when the Mumbai Indians were batting. Coming to the match, riding on Heinrich Klassen’s late outburst, SRH posted 162 runs on the board. Jasprit Bumrah gave away just 21 runs in his four over spell. Rohit Sharma provided a solid start and valiant contributions from Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks sealed a third win for MI in IPL 2025.
Heinrich Klaasen’s controversial no-ball incidence in MI vs SRH match
MI’s Ryan Rickelton remained not out due to the wicketkeeper’s illegal actions, rather than typical bowler errors. Rickelton encountered Zeeshan Ansari for the seventh over when he stood at 21 runs after facing 18 balls in their pursuit of a simple 163-run target. The third umpire reversed the initial decision and sent Rickelton back to the boundary because he had originally called him out.
Heinrich Klaasen from SRH violated cricket rules by having his gloves in front of the stumps when Ansari released the ball, triggering the no-ball rule due to technicalities.
As per MCC’s laws of cricket , “the wicket-keeper shall remain wholly behind the wicket at the striker’s end from the moment the ball comes into play until a ball delivered by the bowler 1) touches the bat or person of the striker or 2) passes the wicket at the striker’s end or 3) the striker attempts a run.” KKR spinner Varun Chakravarthy took to social media to provide his views on the issue
Varun Chakravarthy raises voice over umpiring on no ball
India and Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy questioned the decision to award a no-ball due to a keeping error in the match between Mumbai Indians and SunRisers Hyderabad on Thursday, April 17. The rule is now being discussed by former and current players, with some of them voicing their opinions on social media.
On the fifth delivery of the seventh over, MI opener Ryan Rickelton was caught at cover off Zeeshan Ansari’s bowling. However, replays showed that wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen’s gloves were in front of the sticks and a no-ball was awarded. Ryan Rickelton was sent back to bat by the third umpire.
Varun Chakravarthy reacted to the third-umpire’s decision on social media, writing:
“If the keeper’s gloves come in front of the stumps, it should be a dead ball and a warning to the keeper so that he doesn’t do that again !!! Not a no-ball and a free hit!! What did the bowler do? Thinking out loud!! What do u all think???”
Law 27.4 of the game relates to the movement of wicketkeepers. It states that should the keeper alter their position before they grab the ball, the umpire can award a one-run penalty for a no-ball or a wide, or can levy a penalty of five runs on the bowling team.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, SRH scored 162/5 at the end of the 20 overs, with knocks from Abhishek Sharma (40 off 28) and Heinrich Klaasen (37 off 28) helping them get to a respectable total. Mumbai Indians got off to a breezy start, but wickets at regular intervals saw them slow down for a bit in the middle overs. Towards the end, a quick blitz from Hardik Pandya (21 off 9) and a composed knock by Tilak Varma (21 off 19) saw MI get over the line in the 19th over.
