Punjab Kings (PBKS) produced one of their most complete batting performances of the season as skipper Shreyas Iyer smashed a sensational unbeaten 101 off just 51 balls to guide PBKS to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants. Chasing a competitive target of 197, Punjab Kings finished the game at 200/3 in only 18 overs with 12 balls remaining.
Shreyas Iyer’s innings was a perfect mix of timing, placement, and fearless hitting. The PBKS captain attacked from the start and never allowed the LSG bowlers to settle. His knock included 11 Fours and 5 sixes at a staggering strike rate of 198.04, registering his maiden IPL century in style.
PBKS Bounce Back in Playoff Race
Punjab Kings entered this clash under pressure after suffering defeats in their previous matches, which had slightly weakened their position in the IPL 2026 playoff race. However, this dominant victory over Lucknow Super Giants marked a strong comeback for PBKS at a crucial stage of the tournament.
The team looked far more confident and aggressive compared to recent outings. From the explosive powerplay batting to Shreyas Iyer’s captain’s knock, Punjab delivered a complete team performance. The win also gave PBKS two crucial points along with a significant boost in net run rate, keeping their playoff hopes alive heading into the final phase of the league stage.
Arjun Tendulkar and Shami Strike Early for LSG
Lucknow Super Giants had a decent start with the ball as Mohammed Shami removed Priyansh Arya for a duck on the very first ball of the innings. Arjun Tendulkar also made an impact by trapping Prabhsimran Singh lbw after the wicketkeeper-batter had already scored a quickfire 69 off 39 balls.
Prabhsimran’s aggressive innings laid the perfect foundation for PBKS during the powerplay. He smashed 7 fours and 2 sixes while attacking the pacers relentlessly. His boundary-hitting against Mohammed Shami and Prince Yadav ensured Punjab stayed ahead of the required rate despite losing early wickets.
At 22/2, the match looked balanced, but Shreyas Iyer completely shifted the momentum in Punjab’s favour.
Shreyas Iyer Targeted LSG’s Pace Attack
Shreyas Iyer was particularly severe against the LSG pacers. He attacked Mohammed Shami’s hard lengths through the covers and punished Mohsin Khan whenever he bowled short. The PBKS captain also took calculated risks against Prince Yadav, using the pace of the ball brilliantly behind square.
The turning point came during the middle overs when Shreyas Iyer accelerated against Digvesh Rathi. The spinner conceded 39 runs in his 3 overs as Iyer repeatedly stepped out to left him over long-on and midwicket. Punjab Kings scored boundaries consistently between overs 8 to 14, completely taking the game away from Lucknow.
Iyer rotated strike smartly while also finding boundaries almost every over. His ability to dominate both pace and spin kept the pressure entirely on LSG.
Smart Partnership of Shreyas Iyer With Prabhsimran Singh
The partnership between Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh changed the game completely. After PBKS were reduced to 22/2, the duo counterattacked aggressively and added crucial runs during the middle phase & stitched a 140-run partnership in 74 balls
Prabhsimran attacked the fast bowlers while Iyer controlled the innings calmly from the other end. Their positive approach never allowed LSG bowlers to build pressure. By the time Prabhsimran got dismissed for 69 in the 15th over, Punjab were already in complete control at 162/3.
The partnership exposed LSG’s bowling struggles as none of their bowlers could maintain consistency.
LSG’s Strong Total Goes in Vain
Earlier in the match, Lucknow Super Giants posted a strong total of 196/6 in 20 overs. Josh Inglis played a brilliant knock of 72 off 44 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes. Ayush Badoni also provided late acceleration with a fiery 43 off just 18 balls at a strike rate of 238.89.
Abdul Samad added valuable finishing touches with 37 not out off 20 deliveries. However, despite posting nearly 200 runs, LSG bowlers failed to defend the target.
For Punjab Kings, Yuzvendra Chahal delivered an impressive spell of 2/25 in 4 overs, while Marco Jansen picked up 2 wickets for 33 runs.
Shreyas Iyer Finishes the Chase in Style
As PBKS approached the target, Iyer shifted gears once again. He reached his century with a flurry of boundaries and finished unbeaten on 101, sealing one of the finest knocks of IPL 2026 so far.
The PBKS captain showed complete control throughout the innings. Whether it was attacking spin in the middle overs or dominating pace at the death, Iyer executed every plan perfectly.
This victory further strengthens Punjab Kings’ playoff hopes, while Shreyas Iyer’s maiden IPL hundred will be remembered as one of the standout captains’ knocks of the season.
