A recent major development has provided a significant boost for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign. Pat Cummins, their captain, has been officially cleared to return to competitive action following a prolonged recovery from a lumbar stress injury. After positive results from final scans in Sydney, it has been confirmed that his injury has fully healed; Pat Cummins is scheduled to arrive in India on April 17 and rejoin the squad.
The SRH captain, who missed the initial phase of IPL 2026 and the 2026 T20 World Cup due to his injury, is now anticipating a return to strengthen both the bowling attack and on-field leadership, potentially bringing more consistency to SRH’s performances throughout the tournament. In his absence, the team has been led by Ishan Kishan, who played the role of interim captain, but Cummins’ return is expected to significantly elevate SRH’s tactical depth and aggressive approach.
Pat Cummins’ addition bolsters SRH
It has been observed that in Cummins’ absence, SRH has struggled to defend totals, notably failing to protect 200-plus scores in their opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and later against Punjab Kings (PBKS). However, the recent addition of Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain to their bowling unit has significantly strengthened their squad; both young seamers took four wickets each on their debut against the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
Pat Cummins’ return is also expected to have a significant positive impact on the bowling structure, particularly in the pace department. When these players come together as a bowling unit, SRH’s lineup will be more formidable than ever. Known for his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations, Cummins will bring not just wicket-taking ability but also tactical clarity, which is much needed by the team right now.
While the tournament continues to intensify, Pat Cummins’ re-entry into the SRH squad could not be better timed. While the squad has shown glimpses of brilliance under Ishan Kishan and found a promising new rhythm through the emergence of Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, it is the calm, strategic oversight of the regular captain that remains the missing piece of the puzzle.
If Cummins is able to quickly rediscover his rhythm after his lumbar stress injury layoff, his presence will provide the tactical brilliance that has been missing in the team until now. For the Orange Army, his return is not just about the pace attack or his abilities on the field, but also about regaining the leadership that could transform SRH into genuine title contenders for the remainder of the 2026 season. It is expected that Cummins will be a available to take part on 25th April clash against RR & he will most probably miss matches against RCB (18th April) & DC (21st April). SRH now are placed at 4th position on points table with 4 points from 5 matches.
