Perennial underachievers Delhi Capitals (DC) are still searching for their maiden IPL trophy as the 19th edition of the tournament is upon us. Delhi Capitals (DC) have been at the IPL since its inception but hasn’t got to silverware yet. The only other team to have this feat is Punjab Kings (PBKS). DC reached the finals in 2020 and have reached the playoffs multiple times, but the last hurdle has eluded them.
DC are led by Axar Patel from last season, and they started the season well being at the top of the table for 4-5 games and then suddenly catapulted to a low phase. They collapsed big time and missed out on playoffs to finish 5th. From where they were, that was a catastrophic collapse. What does this new season hold for them? We shall talk about strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of DC.
Strengths
- Strong and experienced bowling attack: A quality pace plus spin combo featuring Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi and T. Natarajan. This gives DC one of the most complete bowling units of IPL 2026.
- Flexible and deep batting line-up: KL Rahul can open or anchor the batting at 3, providing tactical flexibility to the side. Finishers like David Miller and Tristan Stubbs strengthen the middle order.
- Improved top order options: Additions like Ben Duckett, Pathum Nissanka and Prithvi Shaw address the last season’s instability at the top of the order.
- Balanced squad structure: A mixture of experienced internationals plus young Indian talent gives depth and flexibility to the squad.
Weaknesses
- Unsettled opening combination: Despite having multiple options, DC still lacks a fixed opening pair, which has been a recurring issue for them for a long time and needs urgent fixing.
- Inconsistent top-order performances: If early wickets fall, the middle order is often forced to go into rebuilding mode. This in turn makes sure that DC gets a below par score on the board.
- Poor execution in crunch moments: DC lost several close matches in IPL 2025. They were all due to weak death bowling under pressure and batting collapses under pressure as well. Something, they must address to sort that out this season.
- Over-reliance on overseas players: Heavy dependence on foreign stars can disrupt the balance of the team if injuries or unavailability occur for the side. They don’t have quality back-up replacements for these key players.
Opportunities
- Fresh start with a more settled squad: DC have trimmed inconsistent players and built a more defined playing XI. This could help them be more consistent and perform better than before.
- Breakout season potential for young Indian core: Young Indian players like Abishek Porel and Ashutosh Sharma can become key match winners for DC and breakout stars of the IPL to come into the limelight as well.
- KL Rahul’s role clarity and part of leadership group: KL Rahul is set to be opening the batting for DC and will anchor the innings while he will also keep wickets. He is not the captain, but will be part of leadership group helping Axar Patel out and his inputs will be vital from behind the wickets.
- Chance to finally win the first IPL title: DC have historically been inconsistent despite strong squads and 2026 is a big opportunity for them to convert potential into success which is going to be the ultimate glory for them.
Threats
- Strong competition from balanced teams: Teams like MI, CSK, and GT have more settled combinations than DC.
- Pressure of underachievers tag: DC still haven’t won an IPL title. The mental pressure that comes with it is crucial in crunch games. If they do not deal with it well, they will struggle.
- Combination instability risk: Too many top-order options could once again lead to frequent chopping and changing again and again and then role clarity won’t b defined to them either.
- Injury concerns in pace unit: Fast bowling heavy strategy is the way to go for DC but injuries to key players of them could disrupt the balance of the side. This is something they want to avoid this season.

Predicted Performance of DC in IPL 2026
DC looks a solid well-oiled machine. Looking at the pedigree of the players, they should do well and reach the playoffs. But injuries and unavailability of key players could potentially derail their campaign for good. It’s going to be touch and go for them. If the key players perform, they can challenge any team on their day. But they can collapse as well.
So, expecting maybe a top-4 finish for them but could miss out as well. Let’s wait and see how they fare when the tournament starts in less than a week from now.
