IPL 2025: “We Want Our Players Back On The 26th May”- Shukri Conrad’s Strong Message Ahead Of WTC Final

IPL franchises would be in a very critical position ahead of the resumption. The marquee tournament is set to recommence on 17th May, but South African players‘ availability is quite uncertain. Proteas’ head coach Shukri Conrad, along with CSA has initiated the conversation with BCCI for releasing players on 25th May. The playoffs would begin on 29th May, whose venues are yet to be finalized.

South Africa had to work very hard to qualify for the ICC WTC 2023-25 final, given they played only 12 Test matches in the cycle and won 9 matches. The marquee WTC final against the Aussies on 11th June has given them a chance to win the WTC and make a resounding statement that their journey wasn’t a fluke by any means.

Shukri Conrad’s firm stand on having South African players before WTC Final

Shukri Conrad was having an interaction with the media after the squad for the WTC final was announced in Johannesburg. Shukri Conrad made it very clear that the agreement between BCCI & CSA was that the players would return on 26th May, irrespective of the current situation. Proteas’ head coach also insisted that it was a collective decision taken by all CSA board member,s along with him.

“The initial agreement with IPL-BCCI was, with the final being on the 25th, our players would return on the 26th, so that it allows them ample time before we fly out on the 30th. That is the ongoing conversations that are being had between people in a higher pay grade than I am – the director of cricket [Nkwe] and Pholetsi [Moselki, the CSA chief executive],” said Shukri Conrad

“They’re dealing with that. We want our players back on the 26th and hopefully that comes to fruition,” he added.

Concerning situation for IPL franchises

There are a total of 8 South African players participating in the IPL and are a part of ICC WTC 2023-25 final squad as well

SA squad: Temba Bavuma (capt), David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Kyle Verreynne

Kagiso Rabada (GT), Lungi Ngidi (RCB), Tristan Stubbs (DC), Aiden Markram (LSG), Ryan Rickelton & Corbin Bosch (both MI), Marco Jansen (PBKS) & Wiaan Mulder (SRH). Wiaan Mulder as of now, is the only player who will join the squad on 26th May, immediately given SRH are out of the playoffs race; as all the rest 7 players’ IPL teams are in race of the playoffs.

If all these players pull out of IPL 2025, then GT, MI, RCB, and PBKS then finding last-minute replacements for the playoffs would be an uphill task, and the team combination can also get badly hit. CSA has scheduled a 4-day game against Zimbabwe on June 3 at Arundel and are set to arrive in England on 31st May, with all players getting back to their homes on 26th May.

It’s an individual decision- Director of cricket, CSA Enoch Nkwe

Director of cricket, CSA Enoch Nkwe, took a unique stance and said that the decision of coming back to South Africa will be of players. Nkwe pointed out that CSA won’t at all compromise their WTC preparations, and they will stick to their original plan of agreement

“It is an individual decision, obviously, to return or to play or continue,” Nkwe said. “But one thing we’ve made it clear, and we are finalising that with IPL and BCCI, is sticking to our original plan when it comes to the WTC preparations, obviously with May 26 being the latest for the Test guys to come back,”

What lies ahead

This is a complicated issue for CSA as the relations with BCCI can be damaged significantly. If we look at CSA’s stance, then they are also somewhat right, given they are prioritizing international commitments and the preparation to win the ICC WTC 2023-25 final.

Playing white ball cricket & all of a sudden jumping to red ball cricket isn’t a feasible option, given that the conditions in England would be drastically different. If the decision is in the hands of players, as stated by the CSA director, and if they don’t go back to their hometown, then it will be a massive blow not only for the national team but for the traditional game of cricket.

IPL franchise undoubtedly would have started having discussions with the CSA. Only time will tell whether BCCI & IPL will be able to convince CSA to allow players to play IPL 2025 or will CSA will stick to their plans and be a bit adamant, given the ICC WTC final gives them a chance to win their first ICC tournament after the ICC 1998 Knock Out Cup.
