IPL 2025: Ravichandran Ashwin Fears Bowlers Won’t Be In Good Mental State With The Pitches Favoring Batters

The ongoing IPL 2025 season has already seen bowlers struggle as flat wickets favour batters. Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the game has become so challenging for bowlers that they might soon need “personal psychologists” to cope with the pressure.

The tournament has witnessed unprecedented high-scoring matches, with three of the first five games recording 200 runs in both innings. The combination of flat pitches, aggressive batting, and the Impact Player rule has left bowlers with limited options to counter the opposition.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s Concerns About IPL 2025’s Flat Wickets

In a discussion on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin openly shared his concerns regarding the challenges bowlers face in the current IPL scenario.

“You said bowlers are becoming defensive. I want to talk about that. I think bowlers will soon have to be accompanied by personal psychologists. I genuinely mean that,” Ashwin said while responding to analyst Prasanna Agoram.

Ravichandran Ashwin pointed out that on some surfaces, even full-toss deliveries are a better defensive option than pitching the ball, as deliveries landing on the wicket tend to come onto the bat more favourably for batters.

“Okay, people say bowlers are becoming defensive. Let that argument stand. But in several instances, bowling has literally become impossible. On certain grounds, you can’t keep the stumps in play. You mentioned full tosses—but (Yuzvendra) Chahal bowled full tosses to Sai Sudharsan and got away with singles (on Tuesday in Ahmedabad),”

“In fact, a full toss isn’t always a bad ball. On some pitches, deliveries that land on the wicket actually make it easier for batters. We all thought full tosses were easier to hit when we were young, but on certain surfaces, the ball pitches and comes onto the bat better than a full toss,” he added.

IPL 2025’s Record-Breaking Run Feasts

In a single edition, the previous IPL 2024 season shattered multiple batting records, including the highest run aggregates, strike rates, and batting averages. Continuing the trend, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) nearly matched their own highest-ever total in the tournament’s history during their opening game of IPL 2025.

Chennai Super Kings and Their Home Advantage

Ravichandran Ashwin is playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) this season. The five-time IPL champions play their home games at Chepauk, Chennai, a venue traditionally favouring bowlers more than other grounds.

CSK started their campaign with a thrilling victory against Mumbai Indians (MI), successfully chasing 156 runs in the final over. Their next match is set to take place at Chepauk against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Friday, March 28. With IPL 2025 already proving a batter’s paradise, bowlers must find new strategies to survive in an increasingly unforgiving format.
