IPL 2025: Josh Hazlewood Returns To RCB

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are poised to strengthen their campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is set to return for the remaining matches, according to reports. The IPL, which was suspended on May 9, 2025, due to geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan, resumed on May 17, 2025, with the final scheduled for June 3, 2025.

Hazlewood’s return is a significant development for RCB, who are currently second in the IPL 2025 standings with 16 points from 13 matches, needing just one more win from their three remaining league games to secure a playoff berth.

Josh Hazlewood’s Stellar Performance

Hazlewood has been a cornerstone of RCB’s bowling attack this season, playing 10 matches and taking 18 wickets at an average of 17.27 and an economy rate of 8.44. His best bowling figures of 4/33 highlight his ability to deliver under pressure.

Notably, Hazlewood has been RCB’s most effective bowler in the death overs, making his return crucial as the team aims for its first IPL title. His high release point and disciplined bowling have consistently troubled batters, particularly in high-stakes matches.

Injury and IPL Suspension

Hazlewood’s participation was briefly in doubt after he sustained a shoulder injury, which forced him to miss RCB’s last match against Chennai Super Kings on May 3, 2025. The injury coincided with the IPL’s week-long suspension, during which Hazlewood and several other overseas players returned to their home countries.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the tournament’s resumption following a ceasefire, allowing teams to regroup. Hazlewood’s decision to return to India, despite the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa on June 11, 2025, underscores his commitment to RCB.

While Hazlewood’s return is confirmed, the exact date of his arrival in India remains uncertain. A source quoted by Hindustan Times stated, “Yes, Josh will travel to India. We are in discussion with the authorities about the exact date of his arrival.” This ambiguity stems from logistical challenges and ongoing discussions between RCB, Hazlewood’s management, and Cricket Australia. The latter has expressed support for players’ individual decisions regarding IPL participation, giving Hazlewood the flexibility to rejoin RCB while preparing for the WTC Final.

RCB’s Playoff Push

RCB’s current position in the IPL 2025 standings is strong, with 16 points and a favorable net run rate. The team’s success this season has been driven by a balanced squad, with Hazlewood’s bowling complementing the batting prowess of players like Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar. His return is expected to bolster RCB’s bowling unit, which includes Mohammed Siraj and Yash Dayal, as they face critical matches in the lead-up to the playoffs. Hazlewood’s experience in high-pressure situations will be invaluable as RCB aims to capitalize on their momentum.

Hazlewood’s return enhances RCB’s prospects of clinching their maiden IPL trophy. His ability to adapt to varying conditions, as demonstrated in his strategic use of shorter lengths in earlier matches, makes him a versatile asset.
